Josh Welcher pitched a complete game 2-hitter and Woodside broke open a scoreless tie with a big fourth inning to defeat Hampton 8-1 in a Peninsula District showdown. Welcher struck out seven batters and did not allow a run after the second inning.

Woodside opened up some breathing room by exploding for seven runs in the fourth inning. Tim Perry singled with the bases loaded to score two runs and sophomore Shane Arceo singled driving in two more runs that gave the Wolverines a 7-1 lead with only one out. A single by Justin Burrell plated Justin Carter and Arceo scored on a throwing error by the catcher on a pickoff attempt.

The 7-run lead was more than enough for the hard throwing Welcher who improved to 2-0 on the season.

Steven Hux collected both of the Hampton hits while reaching base in all three at-bats. The Crabbers scored their only run in the second after Patrick Kyle stole two bases after being hit by a pitch. A grounder to second by starting pitcher Kevin Matthews scored Kyle and tied the game 1-1.

Matthews started for the Crabbers going three innings while allowing no earned runs, Darius Harris releived Hux and sat down all nine batters he faced while striking out five.
