Why does VHSL schedule state tournament games in middle of a work day ? They are limiting attendance. Everyone cannot get off work to travel to Richmond for a game. Not to mention students/teachers have to go to school. They should schedule games at night or on weekends.

As hard as it may be, I am trying to refrain from talking about that dump called Seigel Center.

They need to separate the championships like they do in football.....

.....That would allow them to schedule more of these games at night. Having state semifinal and championship games starting at 10AM is silly.

I can fix it................................

Go back to the old format. 3 Champions is all you need in every sport except football. Football is about numbers, 22 on the field at one time, basketball takes 5 players. I do not care if you have 200 kids in a school, you can find and mold 5 into basketball players. This crap is too watered down, when you win a final 4 or final 8 game by 50 points, crap is broken. The entire VHSL should be fired. Things worked just fine for 30 years and now in the last 3 years since we have gone to everyone receiving a trophy, nothing but headaches and complaints. I will not attend and will continue to do so as long as it is broke. I can attend a local Rec ball game and see teams as good as what is making our final 4 now. VHSL=absolute joke

Get games out of Richmond

Since they moved tournament to Seigel Center, the state tournament has been screwed up. VHSL wants to kiss VCU's butt by cramming all the games into that dump. There is no need to cram. Spread them out. They could separate boys and girls, but they want to force fans into attending girl's games, while trying to be politically correct.
Virginia probably has the worse run state tournament of any state.

Re: They need to separate the championships like they do in football.....

They tried multiple locations last year and it was horrible!! One central location, which should be UVA, and 4 state wide classifications and

Re: I can fix it................................

I don't agree with anything you said.

It's not even close to everyone gets a trophy - over 300 schools and 6 trophies. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't softball and baseball have 9 players, soccer 11 on the field at one time.Finding 5 to play basketball when you really need more than that is easier said than done. 5 good players (if you can find them at small schools) practicing against a bunch of bad ones in the same school becomes difficult to get those kids any better. Small schools need their athletes to play all the other sports too - practicing year around is a near impossibility at some smaller schools.Who says things worked fine for 30 yrs - there were numerous complaints then too. John Marshall had 900 kids and had to face schools with over 2500 in the state championship - I'm glad they finally got title last year - I think they deserved it. The hoosiers myth is exactly that - more myth than truth. Some groups have complained that not enough teams are in their regional basketball tournament.Your rec league comment is ludicrous.Altavista's team this year could be one of the best single A teams ever. They crushed Surry and if you have seen Surry then you would know they are pretty good. Sometimes teams good teams get blown out - about half of the past 24 superbowls have been won by 2 scores or more, there have been blowouts in NCAA final four & great 8 but no one is complaining. The regions determine who makes their playoffs in everything except football.I don't like everything the VHSL does but not everything is their fault. The system needs tweaking for sure, it has and will always need to be tweaked b/c there are always broken parts.

Re: I can fix it................................

A good team can beat another good team by a wide margin in championship game in any sport. I have seen it in every sport.

I remember in 2007 when Gretna beat King William 42-0 in state semi final football game. Someone posted on vapreps, that they would not beat Gate City 42-0 in championship game.

They were correct, the score was 52-0.

Re: I can fix it................................

Stop comparing football and basketball. Please.. just stop.

If you want to blame anyone for blowouts in the final 4, then blame the schools for not putting a better product on the court or football field. Not the VHSL. Yes, there are some things the VHSL needs to fix, this is not one of them.

Or..you could give credit where credit is due and acknowledge that Altavista has a juggernaut team chock full of athletes on it. Same for Honaker.

Some Light on Your Surry Opinion

Surry is not good. Max Preps results showed only one win against a team with a winning record and they were only 1 game over .500.

They perenially make the tournament because of a weak schedule and a watered down format.

The way they did it last year was bad and not what I was talking about....

......In the 3A Boys for example, they held one semifinal at VCU, the other at Salem, and the finals at VCU. That was stupid.

Here is what I'm suggesting for SemiFinals/Finals(locations are just examples)

1A/2A Boys/Girls at VT

3A/4A Boys/Girls at UVA

5A/6A Boys/Girls at VCU

The new 6A is fine, not perfect, but fine. I would've went to....

......a 4A system myself but this will be OK once they get some of the kinks worked out.

By your take on basketball, why even have 3 classifications, we could just have one.

Re: The way they did it last year was bad and not what I was talking about....

Put one of them at LU instead of VCU.

Re: The new 6A is fine, not perfect, but fine. I would've went to....

4a is all you need, 6a is to much. When you factor in the private schools the state of Virginia has 10 champions in basketball. That's insane.

Re: Some Light on Your Surry Opinion

Have you seen them play - I have. They are a solid 1A team. They have to play Brunswick and Greensville 2x. Maxpreps isn't the best source of information. They beat Lancaster in Lancaster who won the NND (one of the better all around leagues in the state). They made the state tournament frequently before the change in the system - get a clue before you post.

Re: Some Light on Your Surry Opinion

I think after today Surry is 15-9... They were 15-7 as of Friday after starting 1-4.

Re: Get games out of Richmond

What makes the Seigel Center a "dump" HR6?? now, if you were to call the Scope in Norfolk that, I would agree or even Cassel at Va Tech..someone suggested 3 different sites...now, that is almost insanity to me...and I love watching a good girls game as much as a good boys game...if you are going to have different sites, it makes more sense to play 5 & 6A at JPJ for the simple reason it is large enough to handle the larger schools/crowds...however, how many times has it been said on here...the people that run JPJ will not even talk to the VHSL and until they do, it's a mute point, so why keep bringing it up...most of you have probably only attended a few state tournaments...therefore, do you really think you know where the best venue would be? it should be kept as a central location statewide as possible, which would be either one of three locations..Richmond, Lynchburg, Charlottesville...Charlottesville would be the ideal location..but, at this point that's a dream...and it is easier to get out of Seigel on a large crowd day/night then it is the Vines...personally, the concessions at the Vines Center is just slightly better then it is at JMU and JMU is pitiful..unless the Vines concessions have improved in last few yrs..and you also have to consider the concessions...also, I know VHSL used to put the tournaments out on bids..not sure if they still do this or not...but does the Vine have more accessible parking then the Seigel...I would like for someone other then HR6 to say, cause we all know his love affair for Mr. Falwell's facility

Re: Get games out of Richmond

Concessions at LU have improved. and they are better than VCU's if I may say so. But every college in the nation robs people at concessions.

There was a serious leadership breakdown in regards to VHSL, UVA and JPJ's place. If the VHSL state tournament cannot be held there, then someone needs to shut the place down and add more parking for UVA baseball in that area of campus. Very poor decision making on someone's part.

Re: Get games out of Richmond

You didn't answer my question HR6...what makes the Seigel Center a "dump"?...and I doubt very seriously when JPJ was built, they put any input about the VHSL into or the VHSL had any input...lol,,,,

Re: Some Light on Your Surry Opinion

I've got the facts. You use a victory over an 8-14 Lancaster team as an example that Surry is good? GEEZ. Check Surry's wins..calculate the opponents W-L record this year and tell me what you come up with. I repeat, they won the majority of their games against teams with losing records. They lose by 55 to Altavista. A solid 1A team shouldn't lose by 55 to another solid 1A team. Past tournaments? How far did they go? Not very.

And yes, I have seen them play.
