Does anyone know, definitely, if 6C and 6D are combining into a 16 team playoff, similar to last year, or if they are going with two separate 8 team brackets? I have seen commentary on both options from people who allegedly know/have been told one way or the other has been decided upon.

2 separate Regions (6c and 6d) per the new re-alignment. Its why they did away with the conferences and just the North and South Regions.

I had read on here that it was combined for combined 6c and 6d, ant this seems to imply it, but I don't see it published anywhere.

Pretty slack if you ask me.
As I read this link, two things say it is an 8 team format: they specifically state "8 teams" and then back that up with the region final date being 25 Nov, followed by state semis and finals the next two weeks. Based on that, I think (unofficially-it is the VHSL, after all) it will be 8 teams in each of the four regions.

The numbers would still work out if the went with 16 teams. That gives them 4 weeks to produce 1 team for the states.

Interesting that the same 16 teams would be in at this point, I assumed it would be otherwise. Match ups change a good bit

I think it's likely that the top 16 will be different than the two top 8s by week 11 and you are right that the match ups will be significantly different. For example this week under 16 teams Westfield would play Hayfield, but under 2x8 teams Westfield would play Patriot and Hayfield would play Woodbridge.
