It’s a very exciting moment in the season… We are at that point where everyone is still playing but you know the playoffs are on the cusp… It’s that point where teams surprise, teams disappoint… Where players step up their game and the games mean more to coaches, players and the fans… Friday night you could sense this in the atmosphere.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Monacan 33-26 over Manchester
This one certainly lived up to the status of “Game of the Week” going back and forth all night long with the Chiefs handing Manchester their third loss of the season. Both teams have fallen to Bird this season in their worst games of the season but whereas Monacan is now 9-1 with a week off before the playoffs, the Lancers have three losses. Unlike the previous two losses for Manchester, this one was back and forth from start to finish.

Monacan got on the board first with a Kelvin Azanama 63-yard touchdown in the first quarter but as would be the case all game Manchester would answer with a touchdown of their own. And so it would go for the remainder of the first half with Manchester holding a 13-12 lead at halftime surprisingly enough. Manchester did not slow down in the third quarter as they owned the third quarter with an interception for a touchdown and Frank Boyd’s second touchdown of the night. Up 26-12 it appeared Manchester was on the way to a big win and Monacan would be closing out their regular season with a loss.

However… Before the third quarter would come to a close Khalik Hamlin would match Boyd’s touchdown total to get Monacan with a score of the Lancers. In the fourth quarter it appeared Manchester would leave victorious. Not the case, Monacan’s Syour Fludd would put the ball in the air and hit Diontae Bruce for a huge 49-yard touchdown to put the Chiefs up 33-26! There was still time however but the Lancers were unable to answer back this time.

For Manchester, the loss hurts but they are still assured of a playoff spot. The only thing in question now is whether they will be able to retain a home game in the playoffs or will they be on the road. For Monacan, if Hanover falls to Henrico this week it’s quite possible the Chiefs could leap them to take the second see in 4A-East.

SURPRISE OF THE WEEK

Deep Run 24-8 over John Marshall

Mired in a season to forget with just one win to date and a coaching change earlier in the season, the Wildcats surprised many, myself included with a win here. It’s not to say I didn’t think they could win, I mean they had never lost to John Marshall but the Justices have had some close losses and been more competitive this season than the Wildcats. Led by Jacob Hutchinson however, the Wildcats got their second win of the season. Hutchinson scored twice in the first quarter and Josh Duimstra hit a field goal in the second quarter as the Wildcats led 17-0 early. The Justices got on the board in the second quarter but that was the only score they generate this go around. The Justices played a good game, Dequan Brown had another strong game on defense but the offense for John Marshal just was unable to find the rhythm it has had in previous games. The loss hurts John Marshall as they must beat Mills Godwin this week to have a shot at the playoffs and for Deep Run, no playoffs this year but if they can beat TJ this week, they would finish the season a 2-game win streak.

ROUND THE REGION

Matoaca 59-20 over Colonial Heights
The Warriors went from 0 to 60 in just one week… Okay maybe not 60 but close enough. After being shutout last week by Hopewell Matoaca poured it on with 59 points! 31 of those points was scored before Colonial Heights ever got on the board, 28 of which came in the first quarter. Justin Ford was back to familiar form but the real star on this night was Jalen Dowe who had two touchdowns receiving and two interceptions returned for touchdowns. At halftime Matoaca led 45-6 and after halftime the game was pretty even but the game was also in hand by then as well. Darien Canada had another strong performance for the Colonials but the Colonials defense has no answers for this high-powered offense on this night. For Matoaca it’s a good win, a needed win to keep pace in the 5A-South playoff seeding race. For the Colonials, a loss stings but at 3-6 the Colonials are still in playoff position and have a chance for another win next week against Petersburg.

Cosby 56-8 over George Wythe
This one went just as you would expect. The Titans rolled out to a 56-0 lead before George Wythe got on the board in the fourth quarter. Six different Titans scored in this one, Trevor Laury had the longest touchdown of the night, 94 yards! For Cosby, this game is really of no help with no rider points from a winless Bulldogs team but the win does keep them in position for the playoffs. For the Bulldogs, they will have to look to next week’s meeting against Huguenot for that first win of the season.

Hermitage 43-8 over Glen Allen
The Hermitage Panthers are yet again 9-0, the only team that stands in their way of 10-0 is a 9-0 Freeman team; the two meet next week. Hermitage had little trouble getting past the Jaguars. The Panthers raced out to a 37-0 halftime lead and would tack on another score in the third quarter. James Johnson who had a whale of a game a week ago scored the lone touchdown for the Jaguars in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run. Hermitage’s Eli Odom had another strong game with four touchdowns thrown to four different players. With Freeman this coming week, the playoffs I guess you could say start for Hermitage now…

Hanover 50-14 over Armstrong
Hanover did just as Hanover does… They lose one, they win one, that’s been the way it has gone this season in district play. The Hawks rolled out to a 22 point lead before Armstrong got on the board with a 70-yard touchdown pass. The Hawks rolled off another three touchdowns to make it 50-7 at halftime. The Hawks got a big game from Bazala as we have come to expect with three touchdowns on the ground and two on the air. Jack Chenault had a big game as well with two touchdowns in the air and another on the ground. Armstrong’s playoff hopes are fading fast and with a win this coming week against Henrico, the Hawks would lock in that second seed in the playoffs.

Highland Springs 42-0 over Patrick Henry
The Springers are a dangerous team… If not for a team down south in Chesterfield the Springers would almost be a favorite to come out of the region. Surprisingly enough the Patriots shutout the Springers in the first quarter but the Springers shutout the Patriots the entire game while scoring seven touchdowns! Juwan Carter and Greg Dortch connected on three different touchdowns with DJ Anderson scoring twice on the ground. At 4-5, Patrick Henry needs a lot of help to get back to the playoffs but the Springers appear on track for the second seed in the playoffs. This week the Springers take on the Blue Devils of Varina in their annual rivalry game.

Hopewell 37-29 over Thomas Dale
Don’t’ look now but Hopewell is 7-2, locked in on the #1 seed in the 3A East playoffs and looking like a team no one wants to face. The Blue Devils handed the Knights their second straight loss and third overall as the Knights who looked invincible two short weeks ago are very much vulnerable. Hopewell got on the board first thanks to their defense who capitalized on poor field position for the Knights coming up with a safety. Hopewell feel behind however in the first quarter after an Oxendine touchdown but then the second quarter happened. The Blue Devils outscored the Knights 21-7 with Cameren Hill throwing three touchdowns in the process, two went to Ronnie Monroe. Truth be told, if not for that second quarter the Knights would have won 22-16 but that is not the case. The Knights are now 6-3 after being 6-1 just two weeks ago. While they are on a slide, Hopewell is on the rise, 7-2 and in great position to finish 8-2 and make a run in the playoffs.

LC Bird 55-0 over Huguenot
JB Wright had three touchdowns over two quarters as Bird would run out to a 35-0 lead in the first half. Huguenot who is not a bad defensive team was no match for the Skyhawks offense and had no answers offensively themselves. The Skyhawks saw five players reach the endzone with Wright and Shedrick McCall leading the way with five combined. Of course in a shutout the defense is clearly on point as well and Troy Ross was on point when intercepted a Falcon pass and returned it 60 yards for the score. At 9-0 the Skyhawks have only James River standing in the way of a 10-0 season while Huguenot’s best chance for another win this season comes next week against George Wythe.

James River 28-18 over Clover Hill
It has not been an ideal season for either of these teams, Clover Hill is out of the playoff picture and barring an epic upset of Bird, James River won’t be playing beyond Bird either. In this one the Rapids went to the lead early with an offensive and defensive score and it remained 14-0 at the half as well. Clover Hill finally got on the board in the third quarter thanks to a Davod Wilkins touchdown, the first of two on this night but in the fourth quarter both teams combined for 26 points! The two teams swapped scores in the fourth quarter with Justin Esposito scoring for the second time, his first having been a 54-yard fumble return in the first quarter. Clover Hill has the opportunity to end their season on a high note against Midlothian, James River’s task will be tougher given its Bird they are facing.

Henrico 21-14 over Lee-Davis
The Confederates got on the board early thanks to a big return and good field position but from that point, things did not fare so well. Lee-Davis was shutout till the fourth quarter and the Warriors scored three touchdowns in the first half to lead 21-7. The defense did its job and the Confederates turnovers certainly helped. The Confederates did get back into the game in the fourth quarter and they nearly tied it, they had the ball at six yard line with a little over a minute to go when the ball was fumbled and Henrico recovered the loose ball. That turnovers sealed the Confederates fate and delivered a blow to their hopes of a home game in the playoffs. For Henrico, it’s a big win given they have two losses already and this win should bump them up in the seeding. Douglas Freeman 21-0 over Mills Godwin
Freeman’s defense shutout Mills Godwin paving the way for a battle of unbeaten between Hermitage and the Rebels. Freeman didn’t have the offensive output they have had in recent games, just 21 points, 14 of which came in the third quarter but the defense came up big with the shutout. Jordan Smith was the only Rebel to reach the endzone, twice on the ground and once when quarterback Trey Laughlin hit him for a 10-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give the Rebels a 7-0 lead. Now that the Rebels have the win, attention will focus to next week against Hermitage and for Godwin, it’s about ending the season with a win, now out of playoff contention and suffering their first losing season in a number of seasons.

Meadowbrook 31-8 over Prince George
Meadowbrook is playing like a team on a mission and that mission is to get to the playoffs and after this week, I believe it’s a lock given Varina’s loss to Atlee. Meadowbrook was in control of this one all the way taking a 24-0 lead into the fourth quarter and Jace Miller making it 31-0 with a 56-yard touchdown run, the second touchdown of the night for him. As offensively sound as the Monarchs looked, the defense had a hand as well. Matt Hodges recorded 11 tackles for the Monarchs and Jacquez Meadows came up with a big play when he intercepted Royals QB Gurley and returned it 5 yards for the score in the third quarter to make it 24-0. The Monarchs peaking at the right time, problem is they will likely play Bird, Highland Springs or Hermitage to open the playoffs. As for Prince George, another season will go by without a second playoff appearance.

JR Tucker 34-9 over Thomas Jefferson
The Vikings needed a win to keep any hopes of a trip to the playoffs alive and it did not happen. The Vikings aren’t mathematically out but it’s not looking good. As for Tucker, if they were playing 4A like they did the past two seasons the playoffs would be in their future but as it stands, they are likely to be odd man out. The Tigers got another big game out of Taj Conway who rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns but it was a total team effort from the offense to the defense including Marcus Tarrer who had eight tackles as well as a 29-yard touchdown run. The Tigers finish their season against Glen Allen with a chance to finish 5-5.

Atlee 24-15 over Varina
Both teams needed a win in this one but Varina needed it a bit more to keep pace with Meadowbrook in the 5A-South playoff race. Varina however came up short of this endeavor and now must pull of an upset over Highland Springs and get some help next week if they are to make the playoffs. On the other hand Atlee got another win to help them in their effort to improve their seeding in the playoffs. Atlee’s Ethan Ratke came through just as he has all season with a field goal to give the Raiders an early 3-0 lead but Varina answered in the second quarter with a CJ Jones touchdown. Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, despite 338 yards rushing for CJ Jones, that would be the only time he would find the endzone. In fact the Blue Devils wouldn’t see the endzone again till the fourth quarter. In between their two scores the Raiders 21 points and by the time Varina did get a safety and a touchdown in the fourth quarter the game had been decided. Atlee closes with Armstrong as they prepare for the playoffs and for Varina, at 4-5 their annual clash with the Springers is a must win for them.

Dinwiddie 52-12 over Petersburg
By the time these two reached halftime the Generals were sitting pretty at 45-0. The Wave defense was overwhelmed by the Generals who had six touchdowns in the first half by five different players. The only player to score more than once in the first half was Tye Freeland who scored on two short passes from Bryce Witt. Witt finished the day with four touchdown passes and one on the ground as well. In the third quarter Petersburg outscored the Generals 12-7 as the Generals scored on a quarterback keeper and on defense with a 65-yard interception return for a score. Of course by the time the Wave did score it was much too late to rally. The loss for Petersburg is the seventh straight for them and while they might make the playoffs, the success they had in the playoffs last year might not be the case this year. On the flip side of things, Dinwiddie’s offense seems to be back on track and if the Generals can beat Meadowbrook next week, which should in itself improve their seeding for the 4A playoffs.

EXTRA POINTS

With their win over John Marshall, Deep Run has doubled their win total from last season.

Cosby’s 56 points is the most for the Titans since they scored 62 last season against George Wythe.

Hanover’s 50 points is the most for the Hawks since they scored 56 last season against Armstrong.

Highland Springs has five shutouts for the first time since the 1987 season! The last time they got to six was 1982.

37 points scored by Hopewell against Thomas Dale is the most the Blue Devils have scored against the Knights since 1970.

LC Bird shutout Huguenot for the seventh straight season. Last time Huguenot scored on Bird was 2008 and even then it was just six points.

Monacan’s 9-1 regular season matches their 2003 record for best regular season in program history.
