These two arch-rivals ended their regular seasons here tonight with a delayed JV doubleheader. Wilson took the boys' game 40-35, while Riverheads girls' JVs capped off a fine 18-3 season with a 41-28 win in the nightcap.
The boys were never separated by more than that five-point margin. The first half was especially tight as it must have had at least a dozen ties and lead changes, before a late Wilson basket sent them to the locker room on top 22-20.
The Hornets then tried to take command in the second half, as they moved out to a series of five-point advantages, but Riverheads came back each time. For example, after Wilson grabbed a 35-30 lead, RHS' Tylar Davis tied in on an old-fashioned three.
But those would turn out to be the final Riverheads points of the night as the game ended with a rather odd sequence at the Wilson end of the floor. The Hornets had managed to go ahead again at 40-35, when Riverheads sent them to the foul line. WMHS missed but got the rebound, they missed again, but got the rebound. They missed again but somehow regained possession after a scramble. That was how we spent the last 45 seconds or so of the game as the Hornets could not pad the lead but yet Riverheads could not get the ball to their half of the court so they could cut into it.
The girls' game was a little slow in getting started as Riverheads scored the first eight points. Wilson came alive to hit two threes and ultimately tied it at 8. After another tie at 10, RHS edged out to a 14-11 halftime lead. I did not stay for the second half but it appears from the final that the overall caliber of play stepped up for both teams and Riverheads established more of a working margin.
The JV squads now turn in their uniforms for the season, but their varsity counterparts will open the Shenandoah District tournament Friday, which I am sure will be discussed in great detail on here.
