Week 5 Thoughts!

Week 5 was highlited by some teams putting up video game numbers

I have to start with the Rappahannock Raiders who put up 72pts vs the Chargers. This is the 2nd time this year that they have touched 70pts which is an impressive thing to do. They go into their bye week 5-0 with Essex next up. Should be a good one in Tappahannock on Oct 11th and my candidate for game of the week!

Speaking of high scoring, Lancaster over Arcadia 64-62 was something I certainly didn't expect. Lancaster bounced back after a close loss to Middlesex which is good when is comes to playoff seedings in Region A.

Rye Cove continues their dominant start to the season where it is clear that they may be the Favorite to come from the Region C/D side of the bracket to the championship

Sussex loses to Greenville which certainly is a blow to their top seed chances as they have conceded that to Altavista in Region B

Buffalo Gap over Waynesboro putting them square in the drivers seat for the #2 seed in Region B

After 2 early losses, GW looks to have righted the ship and won 2 in a row. Next up is a big time match up with Galax who hasn't shown up yet this year and is coming off a bye week

Altavista wins big over WC and won't face another test the rest of their regular season but maybe Gretna.

Essex with the forfeit win over KQ and with Charles City next up should be another game over in the 1st qtr. They def need to change up their schedule when it comes this upcoming cycle.

College and high school rules differences

For all the fans who watch games on TV and then yell at officials at high school games about automotic first downs, pass interference and various other rulings, here is a document that is just the major rules differences between high school and college football.

Pro rules are really different, That's hardly considered the same game, but I still hear about players "reporting as eligible" and coaches yelling about "contact past five yards."

Staunton/Wilson and Gap/Draft Headline This Week's Shenandoah Games

Still no idea what happened, but my time is limited this morning, so here is an abbreviated version of what I typed last night.......

STAUNTON AT WILSON: The Hornets are too good a team to drop into an 0-2 hole, so they should win this one by a touchdown or so.

BUFFALO GAP AT STUARTS DRAFT: This is the game that will measure just how good the Bison are. As for SD, they are in the same boat as Wilson and do not want to start out 0-2. Look for a Draft win by some wacky-sounding 33-29 score.

FORT DEFIANCE AT WAYNESBORO: Obviously a name-the-score win for the Indians as they will audition new pass receivers to see where they go for the rest of the year.

RIVERHEADS AT CHRISTIANSBURG: All signs (home field advantage, RHS injuries, revenge for last year's miracle win) point toward a C'burg victory, but if the Gladiators want to go down there and win, I won't be mad at 'em.

If these games should in fact go that way, FD will be the only team at 2-0 in district play, Waynesboro will be the only 0-2 team, and the other five will be bunched in at 1-1, setting the stage for a wild finish down the stretch.

What caught my eye, Week 5? Not Much!

I don't think Maury losing one coach is a big deal, but Granby landing him as the Head Coach was a big deal for them. I think we're going to see a big improvement in them in the coming years. The top man is going to assemble a good staff and change the attitude. It was a great move for Granby.
Remember when Chris Fraser was coaching at Maury? Yeah...I do...that wasn't pretty at all and Maury was packing up gear at the start of the 4th quarter in week 10....the coaching staff does make a difference.
He left maury to become the DC not the HC

Same! I got folks in Gaston county I'm trying to help out with Helene, so I missed the game. I hate I missed NuNu vs Samari, but it doesn't look like it was much of a match up. Chambers be alright. It's just gonna take some patience. Ebb and flows.
Stay safe down there. Heard it’s bad out past Shelby towards the mountains. Really wanted to get out to Boone when I visit in a few weeks but that ain’t happening.

Staunton/Wilson and Gap/Draft Headline This Week's Shenandoah Games

It took a couple of extra days but the Shenandoah District teams managed to squeeze in their first full week of district play with Staunton, Riverheads, and Buffalo Gap coming out victorious. The district race still looks completely wide open with six out of the seven teams still very alive for the district title, not to mention regional play afterwards.

Three teams.........Staunton, Buffalo Gap and Fort Defiance.......are all 1-0 in district play and three others........Stuarts Draft, Wilson and Waynesboro...........are 0-1. Riverheads is the only team to have played two district games and they are 1-1, although Wilson tried their darnedest to make sure the Big Red opened district play at 0-2.

With such a tight race, there are many possibilities for how things may turn out. If one team stays hot and wins out, they will obviously be the district champs, but one thing is for sure, those three 1-0 teams cannot ALL finish unbeaten, so something will have to give.

For at least two teams, injuries may have an impact on the rest of their season. Riverheads has lost a couple of guys for the year, most notably Austin Roberts, and Saturday they had another half dozen out of action, only to see yet another one, Jaden Dotson, leave the game with a possible neck issue. Meanwhile up at Fort Defiance, their amazing pass receiver Talyn Armentrout is out for an extended time, possibly the whole season, so their chances may hinge on who else can step up and give Miller some reliable targets. There may be other injuries at other schools that I have not heard about.

Appreciate you my guy! Hope all is well with you. Are you at the game tonight? 28-3 at halftime 🥴 I think we’ll still be a tough out come playoff time.

Final Graham 27, Va High 14

From a Radford fan I'm also worried about Graham because I wouldn't want to be the team that plays them. Defense wins titles and Grahams defense might be the best they've had in over 30 years. I don't see anyone moving the ball on them or any teams offense scoring over 10 pts. Graham's scores will not be as wide of victory margins this year, but it will not matter. 49 to 13 looks great compared to 28-7 but the truth is, the team with 7 has little chance of moving the ball. If you look at how many yds per game Graham is giving up, it's alarmingly low and for Graham, might be historic low and having to go back all the way to 1989. Their defense is that good this year
I agree about the defense being outstanding. It's the offense (or lack thereof) that is concerning as a Graham fan. Also, the self induced wounds resulting in penalties of 100 + yards per game. A good team may need to only score 10 points on Graham to beat them. One positive is that V-High played them tough last year and Graham still made a deep run. There is still time to clean up the penalties, but the coaching staff needs to get on that stuff ASAP. Graham seems to have these mental miscues on a consistent basis the past few seasons. Not sure what the best way to approach this problem could be, hopefully the G-men will figure things out.
