Any thoughts on Dinwiddie @ Maury?

i got Maury 42 Dinwiddie 14

Like 21-14 halftime with Maury scoring 3 more times in second half to extend lead.

The questions i have about Dinwiddie are: No question about Dalton but is the supporting cast up for the challenge? How will Dinwiddie’s secondary hold up against Bond and Co.? Can Dinwiddie’s offense establish a run game and play ball control and limit that Maury’s offense time on the field?

If they have the answers to all those questions then i believe Dinwiddie could gain confidence and make this a good game. If this comes down to coaching I got Mills. And that’s absolutely no offense to McCain because what he’s doing is amazing.

Any thoughts on Dinwiddie @ Maury?

last year we went blow for blow up until mid 3rd quarter when they recovered the fumble for a TD to make it a 2 score game. We never recovered after that. If we can stay level headed and withstand the onslaught we will have a punchers chance. Maury is going to score but if we can keep them behind the 8Ball I like our chances. It’s going to be a hostile environment Friday night communication and poise will be key

I hear you sir. Certainly should not keep a strategy in place as a moral virtue. I would say the converse has also been true. Coaches get the boot because they threw everything at the wall and nothing stuck.

I am also biased as I’m a guy who tried to play a zone blocking scheme at the college level and learned really quickly how much being undersized in zone blocking schemes is not a good match. Realized I had success in high school because I was able to get off the ball and be aggressive in a gap scheme.

Obviously we may be talking more broadly than zone block/gap scheme. I just know broader strategical changes implicate how the offensive line must conduct their business.

I’d be interested how much hidden valley would be losing with the same talent they are currently getting in if they were a run first I-form team like they were ~15 years ago. A lot more clock running and less pick sixes is something I would foresee.
Ps: Hats off to salems defense over the past 10 years being willing to adapt to shut down a ton of great offenses

All the best,
The defense did adjust against Flemming, they went from their base defense to a 4 man front. I really don’t think anyone is trying to say change the offense, but some more diverse play calling would help a lot. Who knows in the end, maybe this team isn’t as good as we think they are and they are calling plays based on their abilities?? Please, I mean no disrespect to the kids on the team now, just trying to understand what’s going on.

@Kilroy25, short to medium range routes have become almost non-existent in today's game. It's either a bubble/tunnel screen or home run ball. Hitch, stick, and hook routes are a lost art. When is the last time you saw a comeback route or skinny post? Salem's use of the tight end and outside screens to the running back always made their running game even tougher to defend.
I agree, but, there comes a time you may have to adapt and have an ace up your sleeve so to speak, just as you say come backs and hooks are not incorporated like they once where. Here again, You have an opponent who’s coach was the qb of your offense, who’s dad had a big role in your defense as a coach, I personally think it would be wise to have something up your sleeve that they don’t know is coming? Why do you think they ran a 60? Because they’re familiar with the scheme! You have good coaches, then you have great coaches, great coaches understand you have to adapt at some point ( doesn’t matter how well it’s worked in the past) now is now. 10 yrs ago the play calling was alot more diverse with screens, running back wheel routes out of the back field, drag routes and seam routes to the tight end. It wasn’t just play action and throw deep. The offense now is pretty much trap, off tackle, counter and play action deep. Different sets, but same plays. Against EC glass 2 years ago in the region title game, it was blown by bad play calling, talent wise, Salem had the better team, but they had a Ferrari in the back field and used him like a 4x4. Made no sense.

Jury still out on Huguenot. Big offensive numbers to start the season just like last year. Let's see what they do when they face teams with some physicality.
Huguenot vs Bird and Huguenot vs Manchester will give us the answers. I'm not sold on Powhatan being a real challenge.

I'm definitely a Huguenot "hater" but I'll give credit where its due. They look pretty good early but I'm not sold on their defense yet and the offense is sort of relying on being athletic(they have a ton of athletes) at this point. But their guys seem to be locked in and buying into the program.

Even pains me to say but if they played this upcoming Friday I might have to pick them over Varina at this moment. @BoKnowsSports This is my dream playoff matchup for this year.

I agree but this year started with an impressive offensive performance vs a team that myself and a lot of people in the class 4 forum think will be pretty good in Eastern View. I think EVs performance in the next several weeks will make people think what Huguenot did to them to be even more impressive.

Rankings really don’t matter but I think teams like Matoaca, TJ and even Glen Allen are too low. All 3 off to really impressive starts an all their defenses are playing almost lights out, especially TJs.

You have a kid. You buy them a toy, it's got the blocks and the shapes. You're young and just getting started at your new job so it's a cheap toy. The plastic bends and your kid can put that square peg through that round hole. He does this over and over and because it works, you never correct him. A few years later you have another kid. You've made more money at your job so you buy your second kid a fancy wooden toy with the blocks and the shapes. Your first kid comes along and does what older kids do and plays with their sibling's toys. Your older toddler picks up the square peg again and smirks, he knows exactly what to do. Except, oh no, that square peg quit fitting into the round hole. If they were a bit wiser and more observant, they'd see the materials of the toy changed and now things don't work as they did before but they never caught onto this because the flimsy plastic toy from before never failed them. Eventually they get tired of the square peg no longer fitting and they throw the toy down and walk away angry and, sadly, not any wiser.

My Takeaways from Week 3

My biggest concern is lack of speed at the Wide Reciever position , against good run defenses Sherando will be forced to throw. Could be an issue later on. This the first year the Sherando QB hasn’t had the fastest person on the field to throw the ball to. Never the less , Sherando is not an easy out for anyone at least in the top half of Virginia and are very well coached team. I would anticipate at least a solid playoff team at the worst.
When #25 gets on the field , from what I have heard is this coming week , he will be a game changer .
Good write up @Shruikan .

My Takeaways from Week 3

Great breakdown of the Sherando game. Going into the game, i too questioned, how well Sherando would do against the passing game of Lightridge. Lightridge's opening drive was sound, and Sherando struggled to get off the field on that drive, but once Lightridge was inside the 20, the shortened field helped Sherando hold them to a field goal. After that, adjustments were made and I was impressed once again by Sherando's defense. I am curious what worries you about Sherando's OL? They are on the smaller side, but are very physical and I felt they controlled the line of scrimmage well. Sherando ended up rushing for almost 290 yards, and have had even better numbers in the first two games. They do need to clean up the penatlies but overall I thought it was a solid game on both sides of the ball. Looking ahead, if Sherando continues to play to this level and improves each week, we could see two undefeated teams facing off later in the season, when Kettle Run comes to town.

As for the Handley vs Kettle Run game, I felt that if Handley would not have committed some costly turnovers the game could and really honestly should have turned out differently. Offensively Handley is big up front and the OL is well coached. I dont feel that they have a dynamic offense and rely heavly on a " wildcat" package that opposing defenses may eventually figure out how to slow down or stop. Which will then put pressure on the freshman quarterback that they are starting. The freshman quarterback is playing really well right now and is impressive to watch, his continued development will be a key for how far this team could go.. On the defensive side of the ball, some of those same big offensive linemen play on the DL as well, and will give opposing offenses a hard time when it comes to running the ball, but as Kettle Run showed, it can be done. They have some question marks in the secondary that will need to be fixed before playoff time, but overall I think they will be a handful for opposing teams all season long.

As for Millbrook, you said it perfetly, when you described them as Jekyll and Hyde!
I don't think the OL is bad by any means. They play aggressively enough to handle any of the area competition and have given the QB a reasonable amount of time to work in the pocket. My concern is their size as you mentioned, and I would add depth as well. I always watched the line whenever Sherando played Martinsburg because those guys have more size and depth every year than any VA school I've seen at this level, and it seemed to me that if they could hold their own against them they could play with the southern teams. The Sherando teams that held their own always had a healthy amount of depth and size to rotate in to offset Martinsburg's advantages.

That being said, it's early in the season. There are probably some hungry guys who haven't gotten a lot of playing time yet. Looking at the schedule, it wouldn't surprise me to see them and Kettle Run both being undefeated on October 18th.

I'll be keeping tabs on Lightridge for the rest of the season. Need them to pick up some wins for power points.
