4B in 2025

Let’s start it up. The portal smoke is clearing up and 7 on 7’s start up in the next month. Going to be an insane year with Louisa coming down from 5C. Lots of story lines for 2025.

Can Huguenot get over the hump?

Is Varina the best team in the state?

How dangerous is Louisa?

Will 4B run through Dinwiddie again?

Is Spotsy the new power in the Battlefield?
You know it is funny you bring this up. I was just telling my wife in the car this evening about the fact that it is closer than we realize. I'm going to be attending some showcases at the end of April, beginning of May. By the time school year closes surveys will be disseminated to coaches and July (4 months) you will start seeing content for previews... granted the mid to end of July.

Can Huguenot get over the hump? Depends on your definition of hump. Can they get to the region finals? That is the big question for me... so much talent but can you imagine if they underachieve again?

Is Varina the best team in the state? Region... I think so.... state... I'm sure Phoebus will have something to say about that but I will say if Varina stays healthy, with the additions to the team... they should be even better than last year.

How dangerous is Louisa? Very... I don't know a lot about them like I do the teams of the Capital, Central, Colonial & Dominion Districts. The Lions lost by just one point in the playoffs to William Fleming. It very easily could have been the Lions playing LC Bird in the Region 5C playoffs.

Will 4B run through Dinwiddie again? You never count out a Billy Mills coached Generals team. He has a way of getting the best out of what he has. The only hesitation for me is replacing a talent like Harry Dalton.

Is Spotsy the new power in the Battlefield? I think this year could be iffy but come 2026 I wouldn't be surprised if Spotsy is a team to contend with. I think 2025 they might surprise you but I wouldn't expect King George Pt. 2 in year 1.

Can Huguenot get over the hump?

Nope too much Varina. Now add louisa to the mix. Still got Dinwiddie. Gonna be tough. My main question for them is actually QB. He's gonna have to be able to move against playoff teams.

Is Varina the best team in the state?
We'll learn very early against Maury. They'll have a chance if the offense is an actual system this year. I hate they're missing out on playing "PME 18u" again. Losing those points hurt.

How dangerous is Louisa?
Extremely. I think they have the 2 best players in the region. How good is the supporting cast?

Will 4B run through Dinwiddie again? Potential loss to HSHS. But the points will be close. I can't wait to see the new version of the offense. 3rd seed at worst.

Is Spotsy the new power in the Battlefield?

Did the rest of KG staff also follow? That was a quality staff they had.

2025 Playoffs/Format???

I've heard that rotating them between the regions is under consideration.

For example, a two-year rotation could be: A Champion at B Champion and C Champion at D Champion with the reversal happening the following year of B Champion at A Champion and D Champion at C Champion.

You never know, the VHSL may try to change things up (this would constitute leadership though so I'm not holding my breath).

They could also try:

Year 1: A at B, C at D
Year 2: B at A, D at C
Year 3: A at C, B at D
Year 4: C at A, D at B
Year 5: A at D, B at C
Year 6: D at A, C at B

I would like to see them have a plan and try not to artificially manipulate the brackets deep in to the season like they have in recent seasons which takes away the integrity of the bracketing. All because a couple of people have an opinion as to what they think the best matchup is so the leadership caves to those demands. They did this last two years with Class 6 in 2023 and Class 4 in 2024.

Class 1 isn't rotating. They are keeping it A vs. B and C vs. D. Travel costs and distance, especially on a weekday for some sports. Example- Imagine Northampton (A) traveling to Eastside High School (D) for a state semifinal in volleyball on a Tuesday night. That's an 8-hour trip one way.

It’s hard to tell with Huguenot being that they only have one OOD game a year you won’t know how they do against comp until the playoffs. I hope they learned from last year though that was embarrassing all around.

On paper I would have to say they are. They have the 3 most dynamic players in 4B for sure (Wyche, D1, Bull)

Their soft schedule is going to bite them

I want to say yes but that’s just the homer in me. Seeing how they preform against Highland Springs & Salem back to back will let me know. I do know they are very motivated this year can’t wait to see them put it together.

Last year they played KG very tough and battled with EV for a half. Idk what they have coming back but I know Luds resume will not allow for failure. They be in the 4-6seed range come playoff time just off of better coaching.

New VHSL Rule

The rule is just like it was 40 years ago when we didn’t have this problem of kids transferring and stacking a team. I’m glad to see it back. Only way you can immediately play is if you move into town with your whole family or guardian. I hope the days are gone where kids drive 15 miles to school using a fake address.
Sounds like what the rule is currently, you must move into the attendance zone with a parent or guardian...the problem is lack of enforcement and verification that they have actually moved with a parent or guardian. The problem of kids transferring is a result of the instant gratification culture that we have now. I wish things were the way they were 40 years ago, when parent's expected accountabiity and believed in hard work and perserverence to get ahead in life and not jump the line to get what you want. I also blame the culture in sports in general with players in the professional ranks forming super teams and going to where they think they will win a championship and exhibit no loyalty to anybody. Same goes now for College sports, where kids will switch teams to see who will give them the most NIL money. Pretty sad state of affairs, if you ask me.
Grown men acting like clowns after they score a touchdown or make a three pointer isn't helping things either....

Baseball: Rappahannock 1 King William 0 Final

King William pitchers, Andrew Lee and Daniel Burton combine on a no hitter and LOSE!!! Two errors in the top of the 6th by KW allowed the only run of the game as Rapp beats KW, 1-0, for the second time this season. Burton got two of the 3 hits for KW. For Rappahannock, Braden Hayes shutout the Cavs for the 2nd time this year, pitching 6 1/3 with 12 strikeouts. Rapp proved why they're the defending class 1 state champion and KW showed why they were in the final 4 in class 2 last season

SWVA football: teams to watch out for 2025?

I don't know about the other teams, but Salem will depend on what they have on the OL/DL and on defense. QB- (Jr) Tanner Overstreet will be a new starter, but I like what I have seen from him on JV. Solid passer and a good scrambler as well. WR- (Sr) Coen Logan will be his deep target. Solid RB play from (Jr's) Kyshead Arrington & Jordan McCadden. Secondary should be solid with Logan, McCadden, & Jones returning.

I think if they can find replacements on the lines to mesh with returners Lynch, Millard, James, then they will be at least as good as last year. Looking forward to 7v7 and workouts to see the newbies.

SWVA football: teams to watch out for 2025?

Graham lost a lot to graduation, but has most of the line on both sides of the ball returning and some very talented sophomores coming up and an even better class of freshmen coming up (could be one of the best freshmen classes that Graham has ever had). I look for Graham to be right in the mix for a title again this year and for the next few years in the foreseeable future. This is the year to knock them off, because of the youth, but come playoff time, they will be right in the hunt. The next 3 years after that, if everybody sticks with it, they should have some of the best teams to come through Graham High School.

Glenvar returns a lot and may be the odds on favorite early on, but I expect Graham to be right there with them at the end of the season.

Former Lancaster Star Troy Henderson

Congrats to him. That’s an odd turn of events. He kumped from Fordham to the current #2 team in the Midwest Region and current sweet 16 participant in the NCAA tournament. Not knocking Fordham but that’s a major jump from them Tennessee. Did Tennessee or any other big program offer him but he picked Fordham? What’s the story behind that.
He had around 18 offers from Mid-major Schools and once he de committed from fordham VCU, Seton hall, Duquesne, Loyola Chicago & Tennessee reached out to him Tennessee is the only power five school to offer

With that being said, what determines who host the State Semifinal games?
