Varina vs Huguenot

Can’t really get caught up looking at schedules. That was the grip for Eastern View and KG for years. Once the playoffs start none of that matters anymore it’s all about Gameplanning and execution. Huguenot hasn’t trailed in a game since Powhatan. Varina hasn’t trailed in a game since IR in September. The first thing I want to see is how either team responds from the others FIRST PUNCH. It’s going to be rocking on 5, Huguenot can’t let the horn or the atmosphere affect them early. Varina as well can’t allow the atmosphere to cause them to lose their heads (taunting penalties etc) this game will come down to who is the least penalized team and who has the most turnovers. I think it’ll be very close …… give me Varina 24-22, Huguenot will score in the final minutes but fail on the 2pc an Varina will run the clock out to win. I will be in attendance with my Dinwiddie attire on hope they don’t run me outta there lmao 🤣

I agree it’s a blessing and a curse. I also played on an 8-4 Salem team that I believe could have beat the 12-1 team I played on. I can count on one hand the solitary plays that made the difference in those four losses on the 8-4 season. Conversely on the 12-1 team, many games were close and the luck went in the opposite direction where we won. Does that make the 8-4 team a “bad” team if I could make a sound argument as to why my 12-1 team wouldn’t be able to handle some of the weapons my 8-4 team had? Certianly couldn’t say that according to the 10 game standard some people have hardlined here on this platform.

The point being, all Salem teams have the ability to go all the way in my opinion, sometimes things just go right and sometimes they don’t. There is always an element of chance that goes into these things.

I’m sure the same thing with dinwiddie. Think how a handful of plays could have changed things in a big way for a whole season. And that could be the difference between someone calling your team “bad”, “good”, or “great”. It’s just the difference in a few plays over the course of thousands all season.
Dinwiddie is 6 plays away from having 5 State Titles 💔
2010 4th & 11 vs Phoebus
2016 4th & 10, 4th & 8, 4th & 4 vs Salem
2017 3rd & 12, 3rd & 6 vs Louisa
If those plays were flipped Dinwiddie would’ve won all 3 Games 13-7, 27-24, 28-23 potentially.

Congrats to ALL Our Shenandoah District Teams

Although Friday night's first playoff round did not go well for four of our six participating teams, the entire district, even including last-place Waynesboro, deserves credit for providing us with one of the most interesting seasons we have had in years. At one time or another, the top six teams all looked like they might be championship material.

All six started off with impressive showings in their first few non-district games. Then when district play began it looked like we had a different surprise and/or a different front-runner every week.

Take for example the first district game of the year when Fort Defiance pounced on Riverheads early and beat the Gladiators for the first time in decades. At that point, the Indians looked like the real deal and left the Gladiators facing an uphill battle. Unfortunately the injury to Armentrout the next week compromised their season and they never recovered.

Two weeks later, Staunton squeaked out a win over Stuarts Draft in a game that later became more significant than it seemed at the time. Buffalo Gap picked up its first district win the same night and Riverheads came within an eyelash of dropping to 0-2 but held off Wilson.

The following week, in a game that should have tipped us off, Staunton traveled to Wilson and shut out the Hornets. SD got back on the winning track that same weekend as they handed Buffalo Gap its first district loss.

The next week was "whatever happened to home field advantage" week as Riverheads won at Staunton, SD won at FD, and Wilson won at BG. At that point, Staunton and SD were looking like the best bets with Riverheads and Wilson still hanging around.

The following week, RHS held off a Bison comeback and Wilson squeezed past Fort. That eliminated the Indians from title contention and led to mathematical speculation (at least on my part!) that we could end up with a five-way tie for the district title.

Staunton and Wilson held up their part of the bargain the next week by winning but SD brought a screeching halt to Riverheads' title quest with that epic 42-14 win. Those game results created a situation under which the five-way tie was still a long shot but it was realistically going to come down to Staunton and SD.

The following week was that weird one when three teams (Wilson, SD, and BG) all had the weekend off. Staunton and FD collided at Gypsy Hill and The Storm pulled off a late rally, which essentially gave them the district title because they were certainly going to beat Waynesboro the next week, so even if SD won at Wilson, Staunton was still going to get the title on the tie-breaker.

As it turned out, Wilson upended the Draft on the final night, which handed Staunton the title outright and left Wilson, RHS and SD all tied for second, with FD fifth and BG sixth.

Altogether it was the most competitive season in years and even winless Waynesboro has reason for optimism. They played hard all season and also had a feisty little JV team. They may still need a year or so but things are looking up.

Next year should be quite interesting for a variety of reasons. BG won the JV championship and that will help them climb the ladder. SD will have Baylor Graber back. Riverheads was relatively young this year but will have to replace both the kicker and quarterback. Wilson will have Podgorski back and some other quality players. Not sure about Fort or Staunton but you can bet they will both be competitive.

Now we do get the two newcomers next year and one of them, Alleghany, just may come in looking for blood. They are unbeaten this season and that quarterback is only a junior. So if he has any kind of support around him, they may be the favorite next year. That just means the rest of us will have to gang up on them and show them who is boss!

Meanwhile, best wishes to RHS and BG as each one hits the road Friday for their next playoff test. Even if they each fall by the wayside, this will still remain as one of our most memorable seasons ever.

Can you share how to watch on your channel? Roanoke city schools has an agreement with Danville schools and I am not allowed on campus.
This is the link to the G.W. Football page on Facebook. On game night, we start streaming at around 6:15pm. Our pre-game show is 6:30pm. "Nick Carty" will share the live video and you should see it at the top of the page. Might have to hit refresh a couple of times.

Few Surprises in Class 2, Thoughts and Predictions

I meant to say Playoff games, I changed my post a bit. For the record, I haven't missed a Graham-Beaver game in 50 years (even the season they played twice) despite living quite a distance away for several years. I have missed very few playoff games. Anyway, I'm being the devil's advocate. This Graham team has a ton of potential, but they tend to shoot themselves in the foot sometimes.
The regular season meeting between VH & Graham, I would tend to agree. They shot themselves in the foot repeatedly. It allowed VH to stay in the game. If Graham keeps from doing that this week, I think they win.

I was telling Virginia High to come see Graham in the snow

What do we think about Ridgeview and Union game ? Ridgeview seems a consistent finesse pass heavy with older kids team — Union seems like a heavy run, old Wisconsin style teams . Thoughts ?
I think Ridgeview is playing their best ball right now, but I don't think it's enough to overcome Union's superior strength and physicality. It will be closer then the first time, but I think Union wins it 21-14

Few Surprises in Class 2, Thoughts and Predictions

Graham scored 20 on offense .. Va high scored 7 on offense … Va high scored on a kick return in which the returner stepped out of bounds and then fumbled and his own teammate picks it up and returns it for TD — Va high qb had 25 yards or so passing last meeting ,, and Graham was coming off a hurricane .. they r motivated and ready to go — come see Graham in the snow.

I have missed very few Graham home games in 50 years. Virginia High had a hurricane and plenty of adversity to deal with too. I'm not going to make excuses for the G-men. They need to show up and play ball. The penalties and sloppy play will not cut it. They have seemed a little better the past couple of games with that, but the quality of competition wasn't exactly stellar. Graham has a ton of potential and it's hard to argue against an 11-0 record, but they are their own worst enemy sometimes.

Few Surprises in Class 2, Thoughts and Predictions

Virginia High did just fine without Slagle and an injured Smith in the first contest. Graham only scored 13 offensive points against V - High the first time around. Graham's offense had better have progressed or they will go home and suit up for basketball. They can't afford to have 100 + yards in penalties again either. Slagle is a ball player and is a difference maker, so is Smith. Those 2 are as good or better then anybody Graham has on the field. The V-High Quarterback is dangerous. Graham's strength is defending the middle of the field. If V-High rolls their QB out and tests the secondary, they will have success. The big question will be, how much time will the QB for V-High have to make plays, if he can get away from pressure and make a few throws, they can beat the G-men.

Sherando vs Jefferson Forest

I know Orange has done this before.
We will see what happens to the JF player who was ejected I am sure JF will file an appeal. I got the film on the play today and the JF kid was punched I counted at least 12 times and did not retaliate. In fact it is clear from the film that he was turning away and trying to walk away. He only fought back when he got tackled by another player and even then he never threw a punch. He wrestled the kid off him. Plus all the Orange kids came off the sideline. No jf player left the sideline. It was clear from the very beginning that Orange had no discipline and somebody needs to be held accountable. One of the kids that ran on the field had already been ejected and by rule should have not been on the sideline.

Thoughts on Region A

Essex is tried and true and battle tested for many years with deep playoff runs. I have not seen Essex this year, but I've seen Rapp and Rapp is awesome. I still wouldn't put it past Essex to top Rapp in a close game and go on to win Region A. Not saying they will, but wouldn't be a surprise because Essex has been there and done that for so long in big playoff games and there's still something to be said about that experience. Rapp apparently is the better team this year by a thin margin, but that margin can possibly be made up for when considering Essex's experience and the "moment" is not too big for Essex. Will it be too big for Rapp? We will
Im going to be out West with family for the next week so Im going to watch some Region C teams action. Lets hope we see another Essex and Rapp matchup. I wanted to catch Altavista and Gap game I havent seen them in person since the beginning of the season.

Varina vs Huguenot

I agree that Linwood stats are great but come on man look at Huguenots schedule. Six teams with losing records four teams on the borderline Who wins the game ? statistically Varina should win this game but anything can happen that's why you play the game that's why if I were a betting man this is why I would put my money on Varina
