Region B Ratings and Playoff Matchups

Give me
Clarke by 21
Strasburg by 4
Draft by 7 (upset)
Buckingham by 8

Wild fact, Buckingham has lost just two home playoff games in school history (but one was last year unfortunately) They also have only won 2 road playoff games in school history to my knowledge (but one of those was in Clarke County in 2010). So here’s hoping for a home win and then a repeat road victory possibly 😉. Tough region overall!!
I think you're right. Won at Clarke in 2010 and won at Dan River in 2013. Lost to East Rockingham at home in 2019. Lost last year to Clarke at home.

I understand fully and that's why I am hopefully optimistic. Since realignment the GW vs. Salem rivalry has been good for this forum and Region D football. The Dinwiddie and GW fan base and media developed a neat bond in the past 3-4 years. Going to miss the Eagle family and wish them well.
It was my good looks and witticisms that made this bond possible. :)

Right back at ya, Navy! We had a blast all three times up there. The only problems were the final scores.

Feeling a bit frustrated today.

That was well stated and heartfelt about what kids lose out on when seasons and games have to be cancelled.

I know that the League has tried a number of times to get an 8 man league formed, but only a very few schools would commit to participating. The League already sanctions and supports 8 man, but the participants are so scattered that logistically, regular scheduled competition is nearly impossible.
Chincoteague plays 8 man, and a few schools that are 11 man have played them 8 man so they would have a reasonable number of games.

It’s coming. It’s just a matter of time. Numbers are not going to improve going forward.

As far as declaring that you will or won’t have a team, by default, that requirement exist now. All member schools are required to have their schedules to the League Office by either May 1st or 15th, I can’t remember which. That’s a bit later than you desire but that at least gives other schools a few months. The problem is, those schools that are close in player numbers are hoping that they will have enough, but they have no realistic way to be sure.

Remember, most schools are signing contracts a year ahead for their OOD opponents. So, take Charles City for example, I’m sure they have been it talks with several other schools for next year and probably signed contracts with a few. They will forge ahead with the hope and expectation that 15-20 kids will come out for football next year. That’s a big gamble, but what do they do? You make a schedule and pray. You don’t want to prematurely throw in the towel and takeaway any chance of playing for your own kid’s.

It’s very, very tough to make the call that you will have a team or not. Honestly, you really don’t know until about the first week of August.

You are right though, 8 man league would sure help.
but numbers should not matter if you are partnering with an already established league. The league actually functuates. For instance STAB plays 8-Man when numbers are down and goes back to 11-man when numbers are up and anybody else can do the same. That would be an alternative to just closing down shop and nobody plays and those left will play a game that is fairer and less prone to injury.

Dept of Education

Okay so according to Google:

  • Funding:
The DOE often provides funding for school districts, which in turn helps support sports programs with equipment, facilities, and staff salaries. Without this funding, schools might have to drastically cut back on sports teams or eliminate them entirely.
Just because the Department of Education would disappear (unlikely) doesn't mean the federal funding would end. It just means money would go directly to each state for each state to decide how it would be spent.

Playoff Format 25-26

Starting next season VHSL is delegating region playoff format to the schools of each region. What that means is that the principals and ADs of each region will determine the requirements for advancing to the playoffs and the format for the region tournament. This is a great idea because we currently have teams with losing records in the playoffs in some regions while other regions have teams that are 7-3 (Monticello Class 3 Region C) and not in the playoffs.

Each region should still use power points for seeding purposes but also have a requirement of being at least .500 to be eligible for region playoffs. Then determine the format based off of how many teams you have eligible each year with a maximum of 8 teams allowed.

For example, if a region only has 4 teams that finish the year .500 or better then, only those 4 teams make the playoffs. If a region only has 3 teams finish above .500 then the #1 seed (based on power points) gets a 1st round bye and the other two teams play for a spot in the region championship vs the #1 seed that got a bye.

This would make the playoffs much more competitive and prevent teams with higher winning percentages from risking injuries to their players in a mandatory meaningless game against an opponent that should be in the playoffs. For example, there is no reason Oscar Smith (10-0) should have to risk injury to their players by playing Grassfield (2-8) in the first round.

Just my thoughts.

Dept of Education

It’s all a chance to return education from a federal property to a more state based property. Allow states and local districts o take charge again, without governmental red tape. I think it’ll be a plus. My hope is that education could return to more of a holistic approach where we care about the total student not just if they can pass a standardized test. There are bigger issues in doing this though, as you will have to ultimately, get more people signing up to work in education. This includes teachers and coaches.

Feeling a bit frustrated today.

Here’s my issue with 8 man as is in the state of VA. Check some of the pictures after their state championships. Last year VES had 30+ kids in pads. This year Brunswick Academy, 25+ kids. I personally get what you’re saying about announce by March 1 if you’re fielding a team and I get that, but you have some small schools who legit don’t think about football until summer or may have a walk on head coach. They may have a random year of low numbers should they get to play 8 man? It’s a lot of imperfect qualifications. If you have consistent rosters 25+ I say play 11 man. (Then you may have some schools say they’ll cut kids so they can play 8 man and win a title instead of 11 and be mediocre). We all complain about the VHSL, myself included, but lord I don’t envy the job, because they’ll never be right

Been falling for Eagles Gold my whole life. Glass/GW will be a toss up. GW’s secondary better bring it or it’ll be another what if conversation until next August.

Handley at Salem

Yes, exactly. We will find out real quick if the improvement is for real, or just a mirage.
If Darling plays and beats Salem , I don’t think it a upset.
You're playing Salem in the playoffs at Salem. If you win, it's an upset. They have 8 wins this year. Over last 40 years they average 10 wins per year. If Handley wins, it's an upset
