Westfield 42 - Mount Vernon 0

The Westfield special teams and defense again played a big part in a strong WF performance, defeating Mount Vernon 42-0.

WF started the game at their own 20 yard line and quickly moved the ball to the MV 34 yard line but faced a 4th and 2. Electing to go for it, Jenks found Murphy with a short pass that Murphy took down the sideline for the game's first score, WF 7-0 (Nicklas XP) less than five minutes into the game. On MV's first possession they ended up punting from their own 35 yard line. A high snap forced the punter to scramble to try to get the punt off but he was being tackled as he tried to kick the ball away and the muffed kick was recovered by WF on the MV 18 yard line. On the next play Jenks found Murphy on a pass in the flat that he took down the right side and WF was now in front 14-0 (Nicklas XP) with 4:33 remaining in the first quarter. MV and WF then exchanged punts. MV next started at their own 18 yard line and failed to move the ball, facing a 4th and 9. The MV coach misjudged the distance and inexplicably decided to go for it from MV's own 19 yard line but the play only gained five yards and the WF offense took over on the MV 24 yard line. WF went on to score again, this time on a Duda 8 yard run, to extend the lead to 20-0 (Nicklas XP missed) with 8:04 remaining in the half. MV gained one first down on their next possession but then shanked the punt to give WF the ball at midfield. After a Jenks to Huda Johnson pass gained 38 yards to the MV 12, Jenks found Sawyer for a 12 yard passing TD to put WF up 27-0 (Nicklas XP) with 4:30 to play in the half. MV and WF again exchanged punts, then MV went to the passing game to try to get on the board as the half wound down. MV's Beffield did complete a 42 yard pass down the middle to Moret to the WF 40 yard line but the next two plays were a sack and a QB run for a loss to close out the half.

MV received the ball first in the second half and behind a new QB, Grimsley, came out firing. MV quickly moved the ball from their own 28 to the WF 38 yard line, but a 4th down pass fell incomplete and WF took over. WF failed to move the ball and punted to give MV the ball on their own 23 yard line. After three plays gained only three yards, MV lined up on a 4th and 7 and managaed to complete a long pass, but the play was negated for a holding penalty. Now backed up to their own 16 yard line, WF pressure on the punt led to WF's Lucas getting a partial block and the kick only traveled 15 yards. An alert WF player, Richardson, picked up the ball and fought his way down to the MV 12 yard line to give WF another short field. Duda soon scored again, from 12 yards out, and WF extended the lead to 35-0 (Jenks to Murphy 2XP pass) with 4:52 to play in the third quarter. On MV's next possession WF's Duda intercepted Grimsley at the MV 28 yard line and WF capitalized again when Binyamin Johnson ran it in from 6 yards out for a 42-0 lead (Nicklas XP) with 0:12 remaining in the third quarter. With a running clock the two teams combined for three scoreless possessions in the final quarter and WF came away with a 42-0 win.
