Deep Run High School Football Seeking Scrimmages (Jamboree)

Deep Run High School in Glen Allen, Virginia (15 minutes outside of Richmond) is looking for two Football scrimmage opponents for the upcoming 2023 season. The first would be part of our now annual Wildcat Jamboree along with Goochland High School at Deep Run on Thursday, August 10th. involving both JV and Varsity teams. The JVs play on a neighboring practice field while the Varsity plays on the main field on a rotating schedule, all within the stadium complex. The second would be a more traditional scrimmage on either Thursday, August 17th or Friday, August 18th, and we would like to travel for that scrimmage if at all possible (again involving both JV and Varsity). We are open to traveling within 45 minutes to an hour of Deep Run.

Interested teams/coaches please email Head Coach Joe Mullinax jemullinax@henrico.k12.va.us - thank you.

Prayers for the Hanover Hawks and JMU Football Families

Very sad news! It was just announced that former Hanover Hawk and JMU tight end Martin Dean Cheatham (30 years old) has died in a car accident. Martin played with Hanovers current head coach Sam Rogers and his brother Clayton Cheatham (2012-15 QB) is currently on the Hawks coaching staff. Martin played on Hanovers first Capital District championship team. He was also a former assistant coach at Austin Peay and Western Carolina. Prayers up for the Cheatham and Hanover Hawk family.

Different Perspective for the Title game

This is such a great story for all High School sports. The first time a Fauquier county school has made the finals after all these years! Then the team has to play a juggernaut who has been a traditional participant in the big game. I wish that more schools could experience the excitement and pride that builds for this type of event.

The county has showed up to support this team.

** The team was fed breakfast by local elementary schools.
** The County leaders and business owners have shown up to support the team for their send off.
** The charter bus was professionally labeled as “heading to states” for the trip down to Liberty.
** A full police escort out of the county.
** The county Fire Dept put trucks on the two overpasses to support the team.

(I wish I could post pics, don’t see that option)

This team has done something special for the whole county. We only get this feeling the FIRST time you go to the big game. I am expecting a good crowd on the visiting sidelines today.

Best of luck to both teams to play hard and stay healthy!!

  • In my eyes, the cougars have already won!

Pediatric Cancer

I was reading the story about the Chance Harman Classic in Floyd, and I was reminded of a message, and a thought that I have never forgotten.

First, for those of you that may not be familiar with Chance Harman, he was the four year old son of Floyd County Head Basket Ball Coach Brian Harman. Tragically, Chance died of brain cancer at four years old in 2007. Coach Harman organized the Chance Harman Classic to raise awareness of pediatric cancers.

Mike Salem, help me with this young man’s name, but the first time that I went to Salem for a football game, they were honoring a player that was fighting cancer. The PA announcer was discussing the tragedy of childhood cancers and made this point.

“As adults, when stricken with cancer, at least there may be a reason we were stricken with this disease. Maybe we smoked? Maybe our occupation exposed us in some way? Maybe we were part of the Armed Forces such as in Iraq? At least we have lived long enough for there to be some shred of an explanation why we were stricken. But children have done absolutely NOTHING wrong. Pediatric cancer is just unfair and undeserved.“

I’m sure most of us have a few unanswered questions that we look forward to having answered when we get to the Pearly Gates of Heaven. The question of why innocent kids have to be afflicted with awful diseases and made to suffer is tops on my list.

Mike, I remember that either his first or last name was Lawrence, I believe? How did his story play out? I pray that once cured, he stayed that way?

John Marshall 83 LC Bird 47

Fresh off their Chick-Fil-A Classic bracket championship during the Christmas Holiday, the John Marshall Justices returned to the Commonwealth as the nations #1 ranked Boys High School Basketball team (according to Maxpreps). Any thoughts of a letdown were quickly squashed as John Marshall jumped out to a big lead then coasted to an easy 83-47 win over L.C Bird.

North Carolina State commit Dennis Parker overwhelmed the Skyhawks defense from the opening bell by draining five 3-pointers on his way to a 19-point first quarter. He finished with a game-high 30 points despite not scoring in the 4th quarter.

The Justices led 33-5 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 47-12 at halftime. Senior Jason Rivera-Torres seemed to be involved on every play from scoring to passing the basketball to blocking shots and starting the fast break.

Parker added seven rebounds and three steals while Rivera-Torres stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, five blocks, six assists and seven rebounds. Freshman Latrell Allmond posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and five blocks. Junior Dominique Bailey did not record a field goal but I had him for nine assists.

Skyhawk senior Yuri Mann scored 13 of his team high 18 points in the 3rd quarter when L.C Bird played on even terms and they won the 4th quarter after both teams emptied their benches. Senior Brendon Wade added 15 points for the Skyhawks.
