Fauquier County
This is such a great story for all High School sports. The first time a Fauquier county school has made the finals after all these years! Then the team has to play a juggernaut who has been a traditional participant in the big game. I wish that more schools could experience the excitement and pride that builds for this type of event.

The county has showed up to support this team.

** The team was fed breakfast by local elementary schools.
** The County leaders and business owners have shown up to support the team for their send off.
** The charter bus was professionally labeled as “heading to states” for the trip down to Liberty.
** A full police escort out of the county.
** The county Fire Dept put trucks on the two overpasses to support the team.

(I wish I could post pics, don’t see that option)

This team has done something special for the whole county. We only get this feeling the FIRST time you go to the big game. I am expecting a good crowd on the visiting sidelines today.

Best of luck to both teams to play hard and stay healthy!!

  • In my eyes, the cougars have already won!

I somehow missed your post way back in December, but you were absolutely spot on. I remember vividly how our community came out to support our trip to LU in 2013, (and again this year). What occurred was very similar to Fauquier. The overwhelming display of pride is something that is remembered forever.

I‘m sure the loss still stings for the boys, but in time they will grow to appreciate with pride that they achieved something that very few kids ever get to experience. And the same can be said for the parents, and the community. Sure, you want to win that final game, but the honor of just getting there is a memory that all in Fauquier with carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Woodgrove received similar treatment in 2018. The adjacent elementary school had all the kids outside to wave and cheer on the Team buses as they passed, heading for Liberty. Coach Skinner had the buses stop and let the varsity team out to high five all the elementary kids. After returning from the win against Lake Taylor 2 sheriffs cars and an ambulance met and escorted us at the Loudoun County border. Once entering Purcellville we were met by 2 more law enforcement vehicles, another ambulance and fire truck which proceeded to lead the buses throughout the whole town with sirens and lights (It was after midnight). The whole State Championship run experience was unforgettable for players and parents. On a sadder note, my youngest daughter won the State Championship on the 2018-19 soccer team (same year), and didn't have 1 vehicle escort them.
