Prospect Watch Hermitage vs Freeman

Hermitage

Rivals 4-star Andre Clarke Jr scored a touchdown and made three receptions. His best play was a great catch on a sideline pass for 33-yards but the play was called back due to a blindside block. Clarke also started at safety but he wasn't able to show his skillset against the run-heavy Freeman offense. He finished with one carry for seven yards and three catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. Clarke is the #7 rated player in Virginia for the 2026 class. His Rivals.com offer page has 25 schools including Michigan, Virginia tech, Syracuse South Carolina, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, and East Carolina.

Junior quarterback Benjamin Yeanay Jr (6-foot-0, 170) finished the game completing 10 of 20 passes for 170 yards and two touchdown passes leading Hermitage over Freeman. He was clutch in the 4th quarter with his team trailing by 10. Yeanay led the Panthers on an 11 play, 80-yard scoring drive that he finished with a touchdown pass to Aaron Clarke. Later, a key 14-yard game setup a 4th-and-1 that Earlonte' Winston converted for a 1st down leading to the winning touchdown. Last year as a sophomore, Yeanay threw for 1048 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has nearly matched those numbers this season with 841 yards and 10 touchdowns passes in four less games. He has an offer from Chowan.

Senior running back Earlonte' Winston (5-foot-10, 165) totaled 105 yards on 19 carries while adding three receptions for 53 yards. Winston not only scored the game-winning touchdown, but he converted a 4th-and-1 from the five-yard line to setup the score. D2 interests including an offer from Chowan. totaled 105 yards on 19 carries while adding three receptions for 53 yards. Winston was a 1st team All-Region selection as a junior after totaling over 1200 yards with 12 touchdowns. He attacks the whole and is able to turn short gainers in to impact plays. He has a D1 offer from Delaware State and he has D2 interests including an offer from Chowan.

Junior Bryson Robinson (5-foot-10, 165) also had three receptions, and he was the leading receiver with 81 yards. Robinson also returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, but it was negated by a penalty. Robinson is a playmaker who is great with yards after the catch. He is super-fast, has great vision and can score anytime he touches the football.

Senior Latrell Washington (6-foot-2, 180) was credited with six solo tackles including a huge stop on 4th-and-1 that gave Hermitage the ball at the Freeman 29-yard line. He had close to a dozen tackles and he was my Defensive Player of the game. Washington is listed as a safety, but he was primarily lined up near the line of scrimmage due to the Freeman gameplan that was exclusively heavy towards the run game. Washington lists Bluefield State and Hampton Sydney among his official offers and says he has interests VMI and Delaware State University.

Freeman

Senior Warrick "Butter" Stephenson (5-foot-7, 180) has breakaway speed. He scored on two consecutive plays from scrimmage with a 70-yard touchdown run and a 10-yard run after a Hermitage fumble. Stephenson scored a 3rd touchdown on a 15-yard run in the 3rd quarter. He finished with 26 carries for 164 yards while adding 10 receiving yards. He has offers from Washington & Lee, Oberlin, Carleton, Middlebury, Amhurst, and Hampton Sydney.

Shenandoah District Has Its Four-Way Tie, So Now What??????

This time last week, The Fort Defiance Indians and the Staunton Storm were each undefeated in district play and possibly looking forward to their November 1 meeting as the game that might decide this year's Shenandoah crown. Staunton especially was on top of the world as they had posted a 21-0 shutout over a very good Wilson team and had picked up a surprise win due to the forfeit situation involving Central Woodstock. Fort Defiance meanwhile was holding its own and seemed to be coping reasonably well with the loss of their all-everything pass receiver Talyn Armentrout.

Each team was looking forward to its Homecoming game, and although we speculated on here about the chances for Stuarts Draft and Riverheads, the two visiting teams, to upset those two apple carts, did we really believe it would happen? But it did, although the two winning teams went about it in different ways. Riverheads put on an absolute clinic defensively, holding Staunton to just 55 yards of total offense in a 14-0 slugfest, whereas SD won at the Fort with an old-fashioned 35-28 shootout.

So that leaves the four teams deadlocked at 2-1 in district play, and each team has three games left in the season plus a bye week. There are numerous possibilities as to how it might all shake out. Will one team stay hot and run the table the rest of the way? Will two of them finish tied, in which case the one that beat the other should have the loudest bragging rights? The most interesting factor is that there are only two games left in which two of the four will play each other. Next week (Oct. 25) Riverheads travels to Stuarts Draft and the following week Fort Defiance will make the aforementioned trip to Staunton.

However under no circumstances can any of the four concentrate just on those two match-ups. That is because two other very capable teams, Wilson and Buffalo Gap, are each just one game behind in the loss column, and between the two of them, they have five, count 'em FIVE, games left against members of the top four. I won't use the word "guarantee" but there is a pretty good chance that either the Bison or the Hornets are going to throw a monkey wrench into somebody's plans. Two of those five opportunities are on tap this upcoming weekend when the Bison travel to Riverheads and Wilson hosts Fort Defiance.

Those will be the headline games this Friday, because Stuarts Draft has the easy game of the week, hosting winless Waynesboro, whereas Staunton has its bye week and will try to lick its wound from the Riverheads embarrassment. So let's get to it and assess this week's three games.............

WAYNESBORO AT STUARTS DRAFT: I am sure the Little Giants are doing the best they can, but it is what it is. If Stuarts Draft is smart (even though I should not give them this idea!) they will play their starters just long enough to get the game under control and then pull them so as to avoid risk of injury, with Riverheads coming to town next week. So for that reason, this one could be a "closer" game, like maybe 35-14, instead of the name-the-score blowout that the Cougars can make it if they choose to.

BUFFALO GAP AT RIVERHEADS: These are two teams that are trending in opposite directions. A few weeks ago, the Bison were smoking and snorting and were very much in the title discussion. But they have now lost two in a row to SD and Wilson, and are realistically out of the title picture. However, as just mentioned, they can easily play the role of spoiler. Riverheads on the other hand appears to be hitting its stride and slowly-but-surely either getting the injured warriors back or finding capable replacements. With these two you can always throw the record books out the window in any sport, so each team will have to bring its A game. I went against my own Gladiators two weeks in a row on their trips to Christiansburg and Staunton, not as a psychological ploy, but because I realistically did not think they could go on the road and win those two games. So I am eating my crow and more importantly this time I expect the Big Red to dine on some Bison Burgers, as we used to say back in my day. I think this one will be close for a while but if the Gladiators show the same poise they have the last two weeks they will pull away late to a 2, maybe 3 touchdown win.

FORT DEFIANCE AT WILSON: This is the game of the week among these three. How will the Indians' passing game stack up against Wilson's also formidable air attack? Will this be one of those five opportunities I mentioned where a top-four team could go down to defeat? Wilson came within seconds of knocking off Riverheads, and in Greenville no less, but then they laid an egg against Staunton, which in turn laid an even bigger egg against RHS. So this one will come down to a case of which Wilson team will show up. From a Riverheads perspective, we need for someone to pin a second loss on the Indians and this is as good a time as any, so I will go with Wilson in a tight one, possibly decided on conversions or by a field-goal.

Sounds like the weather will cooperate if you remember to bundle up, so let's go and may the best teams win!

Big-Play Bison Race by Riverheads JVs 32-14

In a tune-up for Friday night's varsity match-up in Greenville, the Junior Bison rolled past RHS this evening, mainly on the speed and elusiveness of freshman running back Zane Emurian. He broke loose in the first half and scored twice from about 50 yards each time and may have been the guy who returned the second half kick-off that essentially put the game away for the Bison. That return went up the far sideline from where I was sitting and I did not catch the number or the announcement but style-wise it looked like him. Mason Snyder scored the remaining TD for the home team.

In case you are doing the math, you have likely already figured out that the Bison only scored those four TDs, but they were able to pad their lead by going a perfect 4 for 4 on two-point conversions. Those have a way of making a game seem more lopsided than it really was.

Riverheads took the opening kickoff and ran 5 minutes off the clock before turning it over on downs in Bison territory. Three or four plays later, Emurian burst up the middle for his first score.

The Gladiators tied things up early in the second quarter, thanks to a 50 yard run of their own from Lukus DeVore. He was brought down around the 11 but the Big Red was able to punch it in and tie things up with a successful conversion.

It looked like the teams would go to the locker room tied, but with just over a minute left, Emurian was at it again as he weaved and bobbled his way to another long TD. The second-half kick-off return, which may or may not have been him, made the score 24-8. Riverheads scored again to close the gap to 24-14, but when they missed that conversion, that left it still a two-score game, and Snyder's score from about 30 yards out added an insurance TD later in the third.

I was told that the Bison had only lost once heading into this game and tonight was Riverheads' only loss in the district this season. Therefore there is a chance the two could meet again next month in the JV championship event, which will be held at Waynesboro this year.

But for now, let's see what happens tomorrow night in Red Pride Country, where both teams need a win to hold on to their playoff positions. A Riverheads win sets them up for a huge showdown at Stuarts Draft next week, which could be the game that decides the district title. The Bison are probably mathematically out of the title picture, but their final three games are against RHS, SD, and Staunton, three teams with only one district loss each, and they would like nothing better than to spoil the party for one or more of those teams.

Blog LIVE Game Blog - Churchland (3-3) at Granby (6-0)

Greetings from Powhatan Field in Norfolk, two weeks before Halloween. We've got some Thursday Night Football and we're not talking about the Denver Broncos visiting the New Orleans Saints, which fans of the NFL can check out on Amazon Prime Video. Or even the Virginia Tech Hokies hosting Boston College.

It's the unbeaten Granby Comets at 6-0 overall, enjoying their best start in 12 years, hosting the Churchland Truckers (3-3) in an Eastern District matchup.

The weather is beginning to get colder with the temperature at 58 degrees, meaning the long-sleeve shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies are coming out of the closet in full force.

We'll have updates here tonight on the Blog + on Twitter or 'X' @hatfieldsports ... but before that and kick-off at approx. 7 PM EST, let's get to the Predictions that were posted earlier on the V.I.P. Board...

Churchland (3-3) at Granby (6-0) . . . Each of the past six meetings in this series have been won by Churchland, including 21-20 a year ago when the Truckers erased a 14-0 deficit. In that contest, tailback Dontavius Booker (90Car. 771Yds. 7 TD’s) ran the rock 31 times for 176 yards. Also in that game, WR/DB Kingston Hall (21Rec. 252Yds. 3 TD’s) had a 70-yard scoring reception and a key interception.

This is the first foe with a record of .500 or better that will face the Comets, who have outscored opponents 363-13 with an incredible five shutouts so far this year. Granby QB J’Shaun Reddin has been an incredible groove slinging the football with a 27-1 TD/Int. ratio, passing for 619 yards and 13 scores over the past eight quarters against the likes of Lakeland Lake Taylor. If the Churchland defense is unable to get a pass rush on him and disrupt the timing with his dynamic cast of receivers that feature Eamon Cuffee (14Rec. 300Yds. 6 TD’s), Shaineek Wright and Gensis Rhodes (16Rec. 410Yds. 5 TD’s), it’ll be a long night for the visitors from Portsmouth.

Matthew Hatfield –
142-23 (86.1%)
Coach Ed Young – 138-27 (83.6%)

Both Young and Hatfield went 20-4 last week, each missing on Western Branch over Deep Creek, Kempsville defeating Ocean Lakes and Menchville outlasting Woodside in triple-overtime. Matt got the better of Ed with Bruton’s 14-10 comeback triumph over Tabb, while Young kept from losing any ground thanks to Norcom’s 36-20 win over Portsmouth rival Churchland.

New Kent (2-4) at York (3-3) . . . After an 0-4 start, the Trojans of New Kent have won back-to-back games over the likes of Tabb and Jamestown. Their latest win, 14-7 over Jamestown, saw Nathaniel Christian reach the end zone twice on a pair of five-yard runs. Meanwhile, York has dropped consecutive road contests to Smithfield and Poquoson following a 3-1 start. Four of the past five meetings in this series have been decided by seven points or fewer with the one that wasn’t being a 36-21 York victory in 2021. New Kent’s defense can be susceptible against the pass at times, so it’ll be interesting if Falcons QB A.J. Wilson takes advantage, likely targeting Anthony Custis and Jamarcus Tyler through the air when opportunities present themselves.

Matt Hatfield Says – York 26-16
Coach Ed Young Says – York 20-12

Heritage-NN (1-6) at Bethel (3-3) . . . What a night Bruins junior running back Amari Pryear had in the 58-0 thumping of Gloucester, rushing for 315 yards and 7 TD’s on 23 attempts. He also had 142 yards rushing and a couple of scores against the vaunted Phoebus defense. If he continues his torrid pace in this one, with say 205 yards on the ground, it’ll put him at 1000 for the season. The Heritage defense is giving up 36.7 points per game and has held just two foes below 20 points, one of which was Denbigh in their lone victory this year, 32-14. The Canes had just 68 total yards and three interceptions in last week’s 62-18 loss to Hampton, which will definitely cut it in this matchup.

Matt Hatfield Says – Bethel 40-13
Coach Ed Young Says – Bethel 28-12

Brookville

The guys just looked so defeated out on the field against Glass tonight. Hilltoppers had put up 28 before you could barely get seated. I don't recall seeing them have o and d lines this bad in the 45 yrs I've been going to Bees games. 3-7 last yr and looking at the same this year. Program is really struggling right now. I know their working hard though and Coach Lineburg will get it turned around at some point. These Seminole teams are so talented it's just hard to compete right now.
