Prospect Watch Bay Rivers District

Here are more than a dozen Bay Rivers Prospect I watched during games I attended; some received Rivals profiles.

Bruton sophomore Anthony Henderson Jr. (6-foot-0, 160) is clearly the top college prospect in the Bay Rivers District. He has close to double-digit Power 4 offers including offers from Penn State, Syracuse. Duke, Maryland, and Marshall. He was selected 1st team All Bay Rivers after catching 64 passes for 1045 yards and 14 touchdowns. He had nearly half of the Panthers team total receptions. He added an interception for a touchdown while also returning a punt and kickoff for scores.

Madison 35 - Westfield 28

Just like when these two teams met earlier in the season, Westfield left points on the field and it cost them again, this time a loss in the region semifinals.

WF's Rennyson fumbled the opening KO and MAD used three plays to score from the WF 17 yard line when Weiler went around the left end for a 7-0 lead (Hopewell XP) less than 90 seconds into the game. WF's next possession was a three and out, before MAD went 60 yards and scored on a Yates one yard run to extend the lead to 14-0 (Hopewell XP) with 3;38 remaining in the first quarter. WF's next drive started at their own 20 yard line and after a few plays Carlson found Lee open in the middle of the field and he took off for the endzone - but the ref, trying to outrun both Lee and the defender, stepped in front of Lee at the MAD eight yard line and he went down. Fortunately, WF still scored when Carlson hit Lee for an eight yard TD pass and the lead was cut to 14-7 (Wiemann XP) with 37 seconds to go in the first quarter. MAD struck again on their third straight possession, a 62 yard drive, when Yates hooked up with Knicely on a 5 yard TD pass to push the lead to 21-7 (Hopewell XP) with 9:19 remaining in the half. WF's next drive reached the MAD 34 yard line, helped by a 32 yard Carlson to Morin pass, but WF failed to convert a 4th and two to give the ball back to MAD on the MAD 33 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage the Yates to Knicely hand off was dropped and WF's Howells recovered the ball on the MAD 29 yard line. WF went on to score on a 3 yard Duda run to cut the lead back to seven, 21-14 (Wiemann XP), with 2:03 remaining in the half. MAD's next possession ended when Morin intercepted Yates at the WF 34 yard line with 46 seconds left, but WF tried to pass with little time left and ended up punting less than 30 seconds left. The kick was blocked and MAD took over on the WF 34 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Yates found Knicely in the end zone with a diving catch and MAD now had a 28-14 lead (Hopewell XP) seven seconds before the half ended.

MAD got the ball to start the second half and they picked up where they left off in the first half, going 60 yards and scoring on a Yates 4 yard run to extend the lead to 35-14 (Hopewell XP) with 6:48 remaining in the third quarter. Now things were about to change, giving WF hope, as special teams excelled and the defense stiffened noticeably. On the MAD KO, WF's Rennyson took it back 99 yards for a score and the MAD lead was now 35-21 (Wiemann XP) with 6:33 remaining in the third quarter. WF's defense held MAD to a three and out, forcing MAD to punt at their own 20 yard line. WF went to work from their own 38 yard line and reached the MAD 6 yard line where they had a first and goal, but MAD stuffed two runs for no gain, a pass fell incomplete, and the 4th and goal pass was broken up. MAD took over but again punted after three plays gained only three yards. The punt took a hard bounce near midfield and went directly into the hands of WF's Morin, who returned the ball 60 yards down the visitor's sideline for a TD and WF was now within seven, 35-28 (Wiemann XP) with 9:20 remaining in the game. WF forced a MAD three and out for the third consecutive series and this time the MAD punt was shanked and went out of bounds at the MAD 36 yard line to give WF a chance to tie. But after gaining only eight yards on three plays WF faced a 4th and two at the MAD 28 yard line. The sweep around the right side was met by a strong MAD tackle and WF's H. Johnson went down inches short of the first down with 5:18 to play. MAD was again forced to punt, and WF took over on their own 22 yard line with 3:35 remaining. MAD's defense held this time and after three plays lost three yards WF was forced to punt. MAD took over on the WF 46 yard line and failed to gain a first down when a 4th and long pass fell incomplete with 26 seconds left but WF was unable to move the ball and MAD intercepted the 4th down pass with seven seconds left then went into their victory formation to end the game.

A book of the glory days you might find interesting

The Days of Gold is a book about Pulaski County’s football program from 1974-2002, from the beginning of the program to the end of Joel Hicks’ days at the helm. The book starts with brief histories about the Dublin Dukes and Pulaski Orioles, the two schools who merged to become PCHS. Those two programs had lots of success in football. Being good at football didn’t start with the Cougars, it had been going on for a while before. The book covers the history of the program from the beginning in 1974 until 2002 when Joel Hicks retired. The book extensively talks about rival schools too and their rivalries with PC such as Salem, Patrick Henry, Cave Spring, William Fleming, Northside, EC Glass and more. It also includes the following:
- process of PCHS coming into being starting back in 1967
- Every game of every season is covered extensively, with stats for all games and seasons
- every score until 2023
- every roster of those years (1974-02)
- all time series marks with opponents
- Special tributes to Lee Cook and Kevin Crouse
- Chapter dedicated to Joel Hicks and his life up to him coming to PC in 1979
- Every single team photo from 1974-2002
- Over 100 pictures, most in color
- Tributes to the Marching Band, the cheerleaders and uniforms through the years, the 63 steps, the Cougar statue that was installed in 2008, Homecoming traditions, the Powder Puff game, Friday Football Extra, the Touchdown Classic, and the Spirit of Autumn
- A final tribute to the life and legacy of Joel Hicks
- Epilogue about the program after Joel Hicks up to 2023
- A list of former Cougar players and coaches that have passed away
- A season-by-season record of Joel Hicks’ career
- every state champion at each level from 1974-2002

The book is a little over 600 pages long and over 100 pictures. Several former players were interviewed as well to get information and personal experiences. It goes in depth for players who had great careers beyond high school like Gary Clark, Todd Grantham, Shayne Graham, Brandon Anderson, Randy Dunnigan and more.

Prayers to the Henrico Warrior community

Lord wrap your arms around the Warrior community, this young person in the hospital and their family. Very sad world we’re living in.

News 2024 VHSL Class 6 All-State Field Hockey Teams

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — The Virginia High School League announces its 2024 Class 6 All-State field hockey team. Yorktown senior defender Laney Reiser is the Class 6 Player of the Year, and Stafford Head Coach Bryce Barnes is the Class 6 Coach of the Year.

Reiser totaled 15 goals and added 11 assists this season as she spearheaded Yorktown's second straight Class 6 title with a 2-1 win over Oakton in the finals. A Georgetown University signee, Reiser helped lead the Patriots to four straight Championship game appearances and three state titles in 2021, 2023, and 2024, with a runner-up finish in 2022.

Stafford's Bryce Barnes guided the Indians to a 22-1 record and a Region B Championship in 2024. Stafford reached the VHSL State Quarterfinals before losing to eventual State Champion Yorktown, 1-0. During her three years leading the Stafford field hockey program, Barnes' teams compiled a 61-6 overall record, a 34-2 district record, and two state playoff appearances, including a Class 5 state semifinals in 2022.

The Class 6 First and Second Team squads are attached and are on the VHSL website Field Hockey home page: Class 6 All-State Field Hockey Team.

The All-State field hockey team consists of five forwards, five midfielders, five defenders, and one goalkeeper. Only those players selected to the All-Region First Team are eligible for selection to the All-State team. The All-State selection committee comprises eight coaches, with two from each region.

Kings Fork 35 Nansemond River 14

Kings Fork advanced to the Region 5B playoffs final with a 35-14 win over intracity rival Nansemond River on a chilly night in Suffolk. D’andre Artis-Boone connected with junior receiver ZyDareyus Wynn for three 2nd half passing touchdowns for the Bulldogs who defeated the Warriors for the 2nd time this season.

The weather may have played a part in the slow start for both offenses as both teams entered the halftime break with donuts on the scoreboard.

Kings Fork broke a scoreless tie on the 1st drive of the 2nd half. Running back Javon Ford II went off tackle for a 34-yard touchdown run with 8:49 remaining for a 7-0 Bulldogs lead.

Facing a 3rd-and-12 D’andre Artis-Boone found junior ZyDareyus Wynn in the endzone for a 27-yard touchdown pass. The extra point gave the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead midway thru the 3rd quarter.

Kings Fork was flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct and personal foul which forced a kickoff from their own 14-yard line. Nansemond River returned the kickoff to the Kings Fork 33-yard line and then used the excellent field position to cut the lead in half. Junior Taivon Douglas exploded thru the middle on a 28-yard quarterback keeper. The extra point was missed and the Warriors trailed 14-6 with 3:26 left in the 3rd.

Kings Fork broke the game open at the start of the 4th quarter. Wynn took a short pass from Artis-Boone 32 yards to the endzone on the 1st play of the 4th quarter. Then Ford jumped a screen pass for a 24-yard pick six with 10:53 remaining to extend the lead to 28-6 with 10;53 remaining in the game.

Douglas scored his 2nd touchdown on a 5-yard quarterback keeper with 7:20 remaining and the 2-point pass was successful that cut the lead in half to 28-14.

Nansemond River attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by Kings Fork. The Bulldogs drained five minutes off the clock while adding an insurance touchdown with Artis-Boone and Wynn connecting on a 21-yard score.
