FOOTBALL: VHSL RELEASES FIRST REGIONAL RANKINGS

Here is the first set of Virginia High School League (VHSL) regional football rankings, released on Monday. Keep in mind that this season will be much different than any other, as likely more teams than not will not play a full ten-game season, games lost on some teams' schedules due to COVID-19 or other issues with their opponent could affect strength of schedule in ways that are out of their control.
A reminder that the top eight schools make the postseason. Numbers will be released weekly by the League office, concluding with the official playoff brackets on Sunday, November 7th. Records are those posted by the league based on games officially recognized.

CLASS 3, REGION A:

1) Phoebus (5-0, 28.8)
2) Lafayette (5-0, 24.8)
3) Booker T. Washington (4-1, 23.6)
4) York (5-1, 22.5)
5) Lake Taylor (3-3, 20.667)
6) Hopewell (3-1, 20.0)
7) Petersburg (2-2, 17.25)
8) New Kent (2-4, 16.833)
---
9) Lakeland (2-4, 16.167)
10) Tabb (1-5, 15.333)
11) Southampton (1-2, 14.333)
12) Park View-South Hill (1-3, 13.5)
13) Colonial Heights (1-5, 13.167)

THE BREAKDOWN: Phoebus is rolling, with a huge lead over defending region champ Lafayette, and everyone else. Booker T. Washington is a surprise, while Lake Taylor climbs after their win at Class 5 Mills Godwin last Friday. Hopewell can solidify their playoff positioning with a win at Class 6 Thomas Dale this Friday, while Petersburg and New Kent are both in precarious positions with Lakeland and Tabb still in position.

Your numbers for 3A differ from those on VHSL website for 10/18?

Forget it, read wrong post. It’s ok. My only issue VHSL had York/Jamestown cancellation as blank. Ultimately is it no game or forfeit win by York?

VHSL FOOTBALL REGION RANKINGS: WEEK 10

Two weeks to go, lots of games in flux, many teams looking at a nine or even eight-game season rather than ten, and much more. It's a Virginia High School League (VHSL) football playoff race unlike any other. Twenty-six teams are currently in, and plenty more still in the fight for the postseason. Here's the latest regional standings with a deep dive into what's ahead over the next twelve days.....

NOTE: The top eight teams make the postseason in each region.

CLASS 3, REGION A:

1) Phoebus (32.0, 7-0, vs Gloucester Thursday, 1-6, Class 5)
2) Lafayette (24.571, 6-1, at Poquoson, 4-3, Class 2)
3) York (24.0, 7-1, at Warhill, 8-0, Class 3)
4) Booker T. Washington (22.714, 5-2, at Maury, 3-1, Class 5)
5) Lake Taylor (22.375, 4-4, at Granby, 0-7, Class 5)
6) Hopewell (22.167, 4-2, vs Matoaca, 7-1, Class 4)
7) Petersburg (19.0, 3-4, vs Prince George, 1-6, Class 5)
8) Tabb (18.625, 3-5, vs Bruton, 3-5, Class 3)
---
9T) New Kent (18.0, 3-5, at Jamestown Saturday, 1-6, Class 4)
I.C. Norcom (18.0, 1-4, at Norview, 4-3, Class 5)
11) Southampton (17.0, 2-3, at Windsor, 0-7, Class 2)
12) Lakeland (16.714, 2-5, vs King's Fork, 6-1, Class 4)
13) Colonial Heights (15.625, 2-6, vs Thomas Jefferson Monday, 6-1, Class 2)

BREAKDOWN: In all the years we've covered high school football, we've not seen a team be ahead in their region by such a wide margin as Phoebus is enjoying this fall. The battle is behind them. York, with a win over unbeaten Warhill, would overtake Lafayette for second, win or lose. Will Lafayette and King George finish their Week 1 suspended game? We still don't know. The battle for the fourth seed, and with it, a home game in the region quarterfinals November 12th, is hot and heavy. Hopewell has the advantage this week to claim it with a win over 7-1 Matoaca. Then, similar to Region 4B, here, seeds seven to eleven are separated by only two points. I.C. Norcom, playing a Class 5 opponent with four wins, has the best chance of grabbing seventh with a win, should Petersburg, Tabb and New Kent fall for sure. They still could jump if some of the teams ahead of them win due to opponents with worse records, and, thus, less bonus points. Colonial Heights must win their last two games, and maybe get help, to climb into a playoff bid.

Hate to break the news to you because Phoebus is actually 9-0 now because they didn't include the Denbigh forfeit and Gloucester just forfeited the game for this Thursday. So Phoebus is 9-0 with the regular season finale at Oscar Smith coming up next week.

If York and Lafayette both win out, Lafayette will take the second seed, that’s because Lafayette’s last game is against Warhill while York is against Bruton. And no, Lafayette’s suspended game will not be completed. It’s done.

FOOTBALL: VHSL Region Standings: Week 11 Presented By Luck Chevrolet

We've made it to the final week of the regular season in high school football, a season filled with twists and turns, and we're sure more to come. Let's take a deep dive into the latest standings, find out who's in, who needs to win this week and more, all presented by our friends at Luck Chevrolet in Ashland! Remember, the top eight teams in each region reach the playoffs, and teams who have clinched postseason berths are noted with an asterisk (*). Also of note, when we get to State Semifinal Saturday on December 4th, Region A and Region B champions will face each other, while Region C and D champions will square off.

CLASS 3, REGION A:

1) Phoebus* (31.333, 9-0, vs Oscar Smith, 7-1)
2) York* (26.556, 8-1, vs Bruton, 3-6)
3) Lafayette* (26.375, 7-1, vs Warhill, 8-1)
4) Lake Taylor* (23.667, 5-4, vs I.C. Norcom, 1-5)
5) Booker T. Washington* (22.5, 5-3, vs Manor, 3-3)
6) Hopewell* (22.0, 4-3, vs Prince George, 2-6)
7) Southampton (20.375, 5-3, vs Franklin, 2-7)
8) Tabb (20.333, 4-5, vs Jamestown, 1-8)
--
9) New Kent (19.222, 4-5, vs Smithfield, 3-5)
10) Petersburg (18.625, 3-5, vs Colonial Heights, 3-6)
11) Colonial Heights (18.222, 3-6, vs Petersburg, 3-5)

BREAKDOWN: Phoebus is in and the top seed and will get a great test with Oscar Smith to only prime them for what they hope is a deep postseason run. With a win, Lafayette moves to #2 regardless of York's result. Lake Taylor looks to hold onto the #4 seed (that's the highest they can go), while Booker T. Washington hopes I.C. Norcom pulls off an upset so that, if they have a rematch with the Titans next weekend, it's a home game. Hopewell, with a win and a Bookers loss, could be the ones headed to Lake Taylor instead, and, if the Titans and Bookers both fall, Hopewell may slide up to #4, but they'll need to win over a Prince George team who clinches a Region 5C berth with a victory. The final two bids are open, but none of the five teams in contention are playing a team currently .500 or better. New Kent needs a Jamestown win over Tabb and a Franklin upset of Southampton to make it, while the winner of Petersburg/Colonial Heights needs those two things to happen and a New Kent loss to Smithfield. Petersburg has a long shot, Colonial Heights' is even longer.

CLASS 3, REGION B:

1) Meridian* (24.333, 7-2, vs William Monroe, 2-6)
2) Brentsville District* (23.889, 7-2, vs Manassas Park, 0-9)
3) Goochland* (20.889, 5-4, vs Louisa, 7-2)
4) James Monroe* (20.0, 4-5, vs. Chancellor, 5-3)
5) Culpeper County* (18.9, 4-6, regular season complete)
6) Skyline (16.875, 2-6, vs Warren County, 3-6)
7) Warren County (16-778, 3-6, vs Skyline, 2-6)
8) Armstrong (14.875, 1-7, vs Park View-Sterling, 2-7)
--
9) William Monroe (14.625, 2-6, vs Meridian, 7-2)

BREAKDOWN: The good news for Goochland is they cannot be caught for fourth place no matter what. A win over Louisa, however, clinches the #3 seed. The top two teams are likely to win, but what if William Monroe shocks the region and beats Meridian? Brentsville, with a win, moves to the top. The winner of Skyline/Warren County clinches a berth, leaving the loser with Armstrong and William Monroe. Three teams fighting for two positions. Could the Wildcats finally get a win and claim their own destiny? They'll go to Northern Virginia to find out.

ELSEWHERE:

Region 3C: 1) Liberty Christian 30.5, 2) Heritage-Lynchburg 26.778, 3) Brookville 24.375
Region 3D: 1) Christiansburg 29.556, 2) Abingdon 26.0, 3) Bassett 24.778
