Stone Bridge has made the state semifinals in 4 of the last 5 seasons.

North Stafford has made back-to-back appearances in the state semifinals.

Maury has made back-to-back appearances in the state semifinals.

Varina made the state semifinals for the first time since the 2008 season.

Of these 4 state semifinalists who do you feel is least likely to return in 2020 and if they don't, who replaces them?

Maury lost a lot from last years team. So I think they will not 3 peat to the semi. Who replaces them? Div 5 in the 757 is deep with teams like Salem, Indian River, Woodside, Nansemond River, Cox, and rising Pinces Ann. I think the team to that will come out of the East will be Salem or Nansemond Rver.

Not a bad thought. Prior to Maury's back-to-back state semifinal appearances there were three different state semifinalists from the 757. Prior to that of course was Salem in back-to-back years who fell to LC Bird two years in a row.

I agree with the above. I believe a local, 757 writer put out a way too early ranking already. Believe it or not, Maury was #1. Not sure how that is, though. Smith has way too much talent returning from its 2019 team. Maury does have some really good, Div I players returning but IMHO, not enough to take the top spot in the 757.

I see the below teams battling for the Class 5 Reg A crown.

1. PA
(maybe favorites to win the Beach District)
2. Maury
3. Salem
4. NR
5. Cox

The surprise team will be Green Run. Indian River will be tough but don't expect them to get too far in the playoffs. Deep Creek is Class 5 now and an unknown. They can sneak into the top tier again. I like the intensity of how they've been playing the last 3 or so years!

This is the year for PA to make a run with Tony Grimes being a senior.

I think North is the least likely to return, not because they will be bad but because last year Mountain View returns a good amount of talent including a athlete that was getting D-1 offers as a freshman... Last year MV beat North in the regular season but lost to them in the playoffs after suffering some injuries..... North always seems to top MV in the playoffs tho so we shall see

I'd also like to add that Stone Bridge is almost a certain lock to return, They already made it to the semi-finals most years when Broad Run and Tuscarora were in Class 5 with both schools being in Class 4 now I see no real competition in their bracket now other than Woodgrove potentially a program I admittedly don't know much about however I of course do know they won the Class 4 State title in 2018 so hopefully they will be more competitive vs Stone Bridge in the future than they were this this past season

Below is a nice article from Andy Hilton @ recruit757 about PA.

Tony Grimes leads the class, but there are a half dozen others landing college offers at PA

by Andy Hilton, recruit757

Princess Anne High School is in an enviable position. All of their growth and development may come to a head this year as the nation’s #1 cornerback Tony Grimes comes into his senior season.

Grimes may be at the head of the class, but there are other athletes pulling in college scholarship offers on their own merit.

Princess Anne head football coach James Yeager updated us on his athletes who are drawing college interest.

“Every single one (of those guys) is an extremely hard worker,” said the coach. “They all have bought into our program and are doing everything they can to get ready for next season.”

Lineman Marquise Brunson (2021 OL/DL 6-3 280) picked up scholarship offers from James Madison on Wednesday and Marshall on Tuesday. Since the beginning of the year, he’s also picked up offers from FIU, NC State, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Buffalo and Georgia Tech. He held 11 offers going into the 2019 season including Virginia, Virginia Tech and Old Dominion.

“Marquise is getting interest from some of the top programs as a defensive lineman,” said Yeager. At one point, Brunson was primarily considered to be an offensive line prospect. His increased speed and mobility has made him more versatile and more attractive to college coaches.

Lineman James Smith (2021 DE 6-4 220) is in a similar boat, though he’s been viewed as a defensive end prospect from the jump.

“James is continuing to get a lot of love. He’s putting on size and will get into the second year at his position, so we expect to see an even bigger improvement (from him),” Yeager stated.

Smith landed his latest offer on Tuesday when Coach J.C. Price at Marshall came calling. His list also includes James Madison, Toledo, Buffalo, Temple, Liberty, Tennessee, Maryland, Old Dominion, Pitt, Virginia Tech and Charlotte.

Blessed to recieve my 12th offer from Marshall University⚪️‼️ @jcprice59 @dhglover @CoachYeager2019 @JBrumage2 @CoachDJack8 @HerdFB pic.twitter.com/7DWD9sb1TB

Late in March, Princess Anne RB Tychaun Chapman (2022 RB 5-9 160) picked up a flurry of offers including Oklahoma, West Virginia, North Carolina, Louisville and Old Dominion. He now holds 15 offers.

“Tychaun is primed to become the most explosive offensive player in the state. Big time schools love his film,” Coach Yeager explained. “More schools are interested than have offered.”

Blessed to say I received a offer to the university of Oklahoma @dhglover @CoachYeager2019 @GAMEAcademyNow @LincolnRiley @OU_Football @BrianDohn247 @RivalsFriedman pic.twitter.com/LPQW5esA96

Linebacker Jayden Truesdale has seen his recruitment get warm in cycles, and it’s heating up again with recent offers from Gardner Webb and Marshall. He now holds six offers.

“Jayden is getting a ton of interest. He’s the leader of the defense and holds a great GPA,” said Yeager.

Playing right alongside of Jayden Truesdale (2021 LB 6-1 225) is rising senior Hunter Sherman (2021 LB 6-2 230). His play and his astounding academic achievements have him on the list of quite a few Ivy League schools and the military academies.

“He’s going to get more offers soon,” said the coach of Hunter.

Sherman already holds college opportunities at Columbia and Harvard.

Princess Anne should also be bouyed by the return of wide out and defensive back Javawn Burden (2022 WR/S 6-3 185). Burden missed his sophomore season, but he’s physically impressive and very skilled. He already holds offers from Virginia Tech, UVA, ECU, Liberty and Charlotte.

Then of course there’s Tony Grimes (2021 CB/WR 6-1 185), who narrowed his offer list of more than 40 schools to a tidy eight that includes Clemson, Virginia, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Penn State, UNC, Georgia and Tennessee.

A few other key returners are quarterback Michael Newell, defensive end/OLB Miguel Rijo and safety/RB Zaakir Brown.

Coach Yeager and fans of Princess Anne have a lot to look forward to this fall. College coaches will certainly gather to get their eyes on the Cavaliers they’d like to bring into their program. It’s a new era at PA.

The biggest concern with PA is most of there gummy’s plays both ways which an where on you late in games and deep playoff runs. If we have a season, I am looking forward to see how Div 5 pans out in the 757. Being 7-3 could see you not in the playoffs.
