So there has been a lot of discussion over the last year or two from fans about the 6-class system and how it should be either a 4 or 5 class system. So in the few weeks since the state championship games, I put together a couple of models... one a 4-class and the other at 5-class. Take a look and see what they could look like.

I believe Grundy, Twin Valley, & Hurley are combining into one school with anticipated opening fall of 2026. Under the current classification, the new school will fall in Class 2A where all three individual schools are currently single A. I’m not sure how that affects your models. 4 class model will hurt smaller schools like Bland competing against schools like Graham in the same classification in my opinion.

Just curious. Will new school have confederate flag front doors?

Moving to four really would hurt the current 2A teams that would not be 1A. They’d never win a state title again. Even five really puts some schools with less than 500 kids against schools pushing 800 or more. That’s a huge advantage.

5 classes work
Class 1, 385 and under
Class 2 386 to 750
Class 3 750 to 1150
Class 4 1151 to 1700
Class 5 1700 and above

1700 compared to 3000 in Class 5? You can find 22 that can play with an enrollment of 1750 and most of the schools approaching or at 3000 have 1500 students out of that 3000 that consider a football something that's round, you kick, and has big white and black hexagonal panels on it. Graham and Radford are close to the cutoff for Class 1 and they do fine in class 2. Riverheads moved up for 2 years and played for and almost won a title as they hang out around the cutoff.

I think five is feasible, I don’t mind the six classes but I think five would be a much more fair system than four. Four is tough for the midsize schools in the middle classes.

5 is doable but 4 would be definitely be tough as far as overall fairness. I’m okay with the current system of 6 classifications.
