Not taking anything away from him but, I was surprised that he made the list as well. Just because you don't see freshman or sophomores make all-state very often, let alone 1st team. Congrats to all the guys on the list.Way to go Viante, holy cow. Only sophomore on that list!
Hats off to all those kids.
Sophs are surprises but I did watch the highlights. He is good. Very unusual when there were quite a few other kids out there but that's how it played out and congrats to him. Deserving but I don't think we'll see him on the VAPreps All-State. Good shot at the underclassman All-State though. We'll see. Congrats to him and well done. Not taking anything away from him but, I was surprised that he made the list as well. I think what hurt Alex Ramsey is the fact thay he is a "fullback" in the Salem system and there is no fullback spot on any of the "All" teams. There is only RB positions and while he is a beast, there were several other "true running backs" that had better seasons. Don't get me wrong, by no means am I saying he didn't deserve the honor but you have to keep in mind that there were guys like Navy Jones, Palmer from LT, Victor Greene, and his own teammate Clayborne that all rushed for over 2,000 yards. They were all true running backs which left no room for Ramsey..,unfortunately. It wouldn't surprise me if his coaches didn't recommend him at all for running back as they would be familiar with the process and know it would be difficult to get a kid nominated at a position that really doesn't play; especially with so many other guys that had outstanding seasons at that position. Ultimately it was probably the system at Salem that hurt his chances but hey, he got the best accolade of all, a ring! Just my take on the situationVery hard to not see Alex Ramsey from Salem not on the list. I understand he did not make the West team so I know what happened, but I have been watching high school football for a long time and if he's not an all state player a Wild Bear doesn't defecate in the woods. He was without question the most valuable player on the Salem State Championship team. If stats are the only thing we are going to make these decisions on I guess Salem better start running the score up on people so that the stats at the end of the year allows them to make these All State Teams. Nine players make he first team West from Champe while 6 make it from Salem. How in the Heck does something like that happen. With all do respect for John Champe and their kids----the playoff game proved that Champe was not in the same league with Salem---but they get nine on the first or second team and Salem gets six. That is pure unadulterated BS. In Salem, team is always more important than the individual, and that has always been true---but this slight is hard to swallow.

I think I know the answer-----most of the picks are done by stats-----Ramsey did not play more than a half for most of the year. He did not accumulate the stats that other players did who played four quarters. I am curious Rod----what do you think the answer is? Did you not think he was deserving of first team, second team or honorable mention.
That's what I think as well.I think that the answer was that he was not nominated.
congratulationsCongrats to all the kids on the team, I'm really proud of my son, he made 2nd team, and it was an honor for him to even be mentioned with the kids on this team
First, don't get me wrong. Alex Ramsey is a kid I would want on my team anytime.I think I know the answer-----most of the picks are done by stats-----Ramsey did not play more than a half for most of the year. Problem is he wasn't first team he wasn't second team and he wasn't even honorable mention in the West much less All State honors. I maintain he should have been considered on defenseFirst, don't get me wrong. Alex Ramsey is a kid I would want on my team anytime.
Now, stats help support an argument but they are a relatively small part of how the selection process works. It's really, "how does he look"? So here's the bottom line here. Ramsey is very, very good but as a RB, is he better than Navy Jones, Victor Green or the Gatorade POY in VA? Plus, there's a list of others. Let's just isolate this to Salem. I saw the last 3 playoff games. Alex is a very good player but Next level Coachs are going to see DeAngelo as the game changer.
Now, they're probably quite equal as players with abilities but the TEAM was best served in the positions they were in. It's what helped Salem win the Title. No, the glory isn't there by accolade and it was Alex that got the hard yards when needed. It was Alex that kept LT from going in the middle and giving DeAngelo the opportunities on the edge and man did he stick people.
But 2nd team, at best when the others in front are that good from a talent stand point.
actually, when the VAPreps team comes out, I'm sure he will receive strong consideration for both and deservedly so. He's a very fine player.Problem is he wasn't first team he wasn't second team and he wasn't even honorable mention in the West much less All State honors. Also remember, this is a recruiting site. Much of what VAPreps will take into consideration is what kind of player they are from a next level standpoint.
From other posts over the years, pretty positive I had nailed this one. Apparently, I hit my thumb.
I'm sure you and the staff will do a great job on the All-State.......again.
I agree, the fundamentally sound and disciplined team is something that will always be there with Salem. I think the talent level these next few years will rival the most talented teams in the state. Deangelo Ramsey getting to run the ball is going to be showcase and then they have guys like Tucker and Avante Robinson... I think all three kids will eventually earn FBS offers. Riley Fox is coming back and he could very well have been the second best defensive player in the state behind Wayne Davis. Will be interesting who is on Va. Prep team. Will also be interesting how the coaching change at VT might affect both players from Salem that signed there last year. There is also a SW Va. team called Timesland that considers all the players in the Roanoke times and World News distribution area and I am sure Salem and Magna Vista will dominate most of these positions---this team also has a sizzilin sophomore list and Salem will have a few on that list for sure.
Also I am sure that Salem fans appreciate your kind words about the program. I think that many Salem fans have been trying to tell people on this board for a long time that Salem teams are often not the most talented but the program does things in a way that makes them stronger than the individual talent they might have. We have had a nice run of talent the last two years and I hope it continues, but even if the talent stream starts to dry up I don't think the fundamentals of the program will change.
Coleman will likely be used as a slot receiver.Act

I stood many times last season on Salem's Fox Coleman and how he was not an FBS player. But I now see he can play at VT. Not as a starting RB, though injuries may get him opportunities. But as a special teams player and special situations player, he could make a serious impact. Same with Ramsey. Put him in the right place, at the right time and people will surprised at what he delivers. He can get that yard or two you need. He will put the hammer on anyone he's assigned to block. On defense, I don't know if he's fast enough but he will stick his nose in.....hard. And there's no question he'll work his butt off to make it so.
Just gotta give it to those Salem guys. NOT the most talented but man for man the most disciplined, well Coached, balanced, hard nosed and determined group I've seen in a long time.
It would be nice if they could all be recognized but they can't. Be satisfied they were the best TEAM in 2015 and no poll of anyone's opinion can take it away from them. You have the ring. That would be enough for me.
Congrats to all the kids on the team, I'm really proud of my son, he made 2nd team, and it was an honor for him to even be mentioned with the kids on this team
Congrats to you and your son, it's really been a lot of fun, and I'm truly gonna miss Friday night football, I know you are proud of your son, I was nervous when the season started and they put him at mlb( he's 5'11" 180 lbs), but he made the most of it, missed the second half of several games due to the team having big leads, and still managed 129 tackles!! Good luck to your son, whether he's coming back to high school or moving on to collegeMy son did as well, and I couldn't be prouder of him. It's been a really special season.
