4B-D Football Race

FOOTBALL: VHSL Region Rankings And Analysis

And, just like that, we're down to only four football Fridays in the regular season. So let's dig into the latest Virginia High School League (VHSL) Region standings and see where teams are with three or four games remaining.

CLASS 4, REGION B:

1) Varina 28.667 (6-0, vs. Atlee Friday)
2) Dinwiddie 27.333 (6-0, vs. Petersburg Friday)
3) King George 27.0 (4-0, at Chancellor Friday)
4) Hanover 24.333 (5-1, at Highland Springs Friday)
5) Eastern View 23.714 (6-1, vs Spotsylvania Friday)
6) Patrick Henry 23.333 (4-2, at Armstrong Thursday)
7T) Powhatan 23.167 (5-1, vs. Clover Hill Friday)
Matoaca 23.167 (3-3, vs. Prince George Thursday)
***
9) Courtland 20.5 (3-3, at Caroline Friday)
10) Spotsylvania 19.333 (3-3, at Eastern View Friday)
11) Henrico 19.143 (2-5, at Mechanicsville Friday)
12) Atlee 17.667 (2-4, at Varina Friday)
13) Monacan 17.0 (1-5, vs. James River Friday)
14) Huguenot 16.0
15T) Chancellor 14.833
Mechanicsville 14.833
17) George Wythe 14.0

ANALYSIS: If a team like Courtland or Spotsylvania doesn't make a move soon, this most rugged of regions won't have an issue with who will be in the top eight, but there'll be plenty of movement within it. Varina will host a desperate Atlee squad, who have to go 3-1 down the stretch for any hopes of the postseason. Dinwiddie will not overlook Petersburg as they seek to crawl closer to the Blue Devils should both win. King George will be hurt by facing a winless Chancellor squad. Last week, Eastern View, in their renaissance season, overtook Patrick Henry for the #5 spot. This week, the Cyclones hope a win over 3-3 Spotsylvania will be enough to overtake Hanover for the four seed should the Hawks not pull the big upset at Highland Springs. Why is that important? The #4 seed gets a home game in the first round. The Patriots will have to handle an Armstrong team on the road who is definitely improved from the past several years. Then there's Powhatan and Matoaca, who both host Class 5, Region C teams in big need of victories as Clover Hill and Prince George are tied for the eighth and final seed there. Courtland gets 1-5 Caroline from Class 3, making it difficult for them to get closer to the top eight.

NOTE: In Class 4, Region D, Louisa, despite defeating previously unbeaten Orange, stays stuck in third place, less than a half point behind #1 Salem and #2 E.C. Glass.

@FoxesPride, you guys will crush them. A win will bring your point total up to 27.20. There is going to be a ton of movement in the next few weeks. Every team in the top 8 has at least one tough game left. #8 Matoaca/Hopewell, #7 Powhatan/Midlothian/LC Bird, #6 PH/Hanover/Varina, #5 EV/King George, #4 Hanover/Highland Springs/PH, #3 KG/EV, #2 Dinwiddie/Thomas Dale, and #1 Varina/PH/Highland Springs. There are no "ducks" (guaranteed wins) in the top eight, so the playoff seedings are going to be critical. Going to be tough to win three games on the road with this group.

Isn’t it possible for Louisa to finish 10-0 and not make playoffs

They'll make the playoffs. They may not get the 1 seed though, even if they're undefeated. It will be close with Salem if both win out. Glass has a tough couple of games left.

A 10-0 Lions team should be darn close Mike. They will get decent points from Western and even better from Albemarle. A win or loss by a couple of defeated teams will probably decide who is #1.

Louisa could lose their remaining three games and still make the region d playoffs. If they win out and Salem does the same it's going to be close for the #1 seed. OOD rider points are key here. Salem gets a point for every Martinsburg win (likely 9) and their other opportunities for 2 point riders are more promising than Louisa's chances (Massopponax, Courtland, and Huguenot).

JD really hurts Louisa this year....I wonder if their AD has considered asking to leave that district especially when the make the move to 5c. They really won't stand much of a chance to be a top seed in 5 with so little points to gain from the district.

I think it’s a little late for that. Requesting a district change I believe should have been voted on recently. I guess if they plan on staying in 5 they should start formally putting a request together to move for the cycle after next.

Good point, but it's like that in most districts. Yes, there are some exceptions, but everybody has "no pointers". OOD games are so crucial, but even then it has its risk. Dinwiddie had GW Danville, N. Stafford and Heritage this year and unfortunately GW and N. Stafford are usually good for at least 7-8 wins. Unfortunately, these two programs are struggling and Dinwiddie is not getting the expected rider points. Same with King George. Their district is down and with the exception of Lafayette they aren't getting a ton of help. Keep the faith. Getting a 2 seed keeps you at home for at least two games.

Louisa could still get the 1 seed. It will probably come down to 1 or 2 games. Extremely narrow margins this year.

Martinsburg lost to Riverside OH 36-35 last weekend FWIW. If (IF) Salem wins out I'd expect wins over 7-3 Cburg (win out minus loss to PH), 7-3 Franklin Co (win out minus loss to LB), and 8-2 PH (win out minus loss to Salem).

Salem's got to get past an improved Cave Spring and dangerous PH first, though. Win and the rest will take care of itself.

nope but he should be looking to play some schools in 5C.
I would say 5 or 6, A & B would be a better choice. Play up if you can find an opponent, and in Regions that you won’t face until the championship game, if at all.

But, it’s a moot point. I believe their schedule is set. We were hoping Dinwiddie would schedule the Lions but were told they were already set your the next two year cycle.

Yeah I wasn't saying next year, but wondering if AD has considered it is all.
Louisa would fair extremely well in the Colonial District. They’d be about 45 minutes from all of the schools in their district. It would make that district a lot better, especially Marshall and Tee Jay moves to a smaller classification district.

and where exactly would that be?

There are enough schools of like size and abilities to justify exploration of this idea.
Marshall and Tee Jay does really well in the Colonial. Marshall’s been down in football but they haven’t lost a Colonial basketball game in a while. Tee Jay is competitive in just about everything and would be a top 3 team if they played a full Colonial football schedule this season. It’s just unfair to think that Godwin and Glen Allen will be moving to 6A and both Tee Jay and JM will be 2A. Everyone else will be 5A. It makes more sense to let them play like sized schools. Herm has been trying to play Louisa for the past few seasons in football and when they did play (JV football and girls’ basketball), it was a significant turnout.

Louisa has great community support.
The best I’ve seen. Herm has hit or miss community support but those particular games, it was a full house on both sides. Louisa is a straight shot down Staples Mills Road (Highway 33) or a 40 minute drive down 64, so it’s easily accessible to the West End schools which is 95% of the Colonial District. Marshall and Maggie Walker are the only schools that isn’t located in West End.

FOOTBALL: VHSL Region Rankings/Analysis for Week 9

Three weeks remain in the 2022 high school football regular season. Some teams are already in the postseason, others looking to clinch the top seed in their respective region, while others are fighting to make the top eight. Let's take a deep dive into the latest Virginia High School League (VHSL) region standings containing RVA teams.

NOTE: * denotes clinching a playoff berth

CLASS 4, REGION B:

1) *Dinwiddie 29.143 (7-0, at Prince George (1-6) Friday)
2) *Varina 28.857 (7-0, at Henrico (2-6) Thursday)
3) *King George 27.333 (6-0, vs Eastern View (7-1) Friday)
4) Eastern View 25.125 (7-1, at King George (6-0) Friday)
5) Hanover 25.0 (5-2, vs Patrick Henry (5-2) Friday)
6) Powhatan 24.571 (6-1, at L.C. Bird (5-2) Friday)
7) Patrick Henry 24.429 (5-2, at Hanover (5-2) Friday)
8) Matoaca 23.857 (4-3, vs Colonial Heights (4-3) Friday)
---
9) Courtland 19.857 (3-4, vs Culpeper (2-5) Friday)
10) Monacan 19.286 (2-5, vs Huguenot (0-7) Friday)
11) Spotsylvania 19.0 (3-4, vs James Monroe (2-5) Friday)
12) Henrico 18.625 (2-6, vs Varina (7-0) Friday)
13) Atlee 18.143 (2-5, vs Armstrong (3-4) Friday)

ANALYSIS: What a Friday night it's going to be in Region 4B!! #12 hopes an upset of #2 propels them over three teams and back into the eight-team playoff race, while #3 and #4 do battle, as do #5 and #7. This is "shakeout" week indeed. Dinwiddie became the new #1 seed simply by strength of schedule, beating Petersburg while Varina defeated Armstrong. King George beat winless Chancellor, and fell 1 1/2 plus points behind both. They can right that with a win over 7-1 Eastern View, who is firmly back in the playoff picture after two seasons of unexpected mediocrity. They will make a definitive statement about their return if they leave King George winners Friday. As for the Patrick Henry/Hanover battle, it's a big game for both, but more of a must win for the Patriots, as they next get Varina at home before Tomato Bowl 64 against, for now, just a one-win team in Mechanicsville. Teams like Courtland, Monacan and Spotsylvania desperately need Colonial Heights to upset Matoaca.

CLASS 4, REGION D: Louisa, despite an 8-0 record, the best in their region, is still in third place at 25.75 points, behind E.C. Glass (26.714) and Salem (26.571). Both of those teams are 6-1. The Lions have Albemarle and Goochland left on their schedule, both E.C. Glass and Salem also have a game in hand. This is a good time to remind everyone that Louisa will be one of the new teams in Class 5, Region C next year, when Highland Springs leaves for Class 6, Region A and the football race will be much, much different.

If Varina defeats Patrick Henry-Ashland as expected they will take over the top spot. Dinwiddie plays a one win Meadowbrook (Class 5 team) team and will accrue very few OOD rider points. If Varina, Dinwiddie, and KG all go into the final weekend unbeaten then things will be very interesting to say the least.

Unless I'm terribly mistaken, Glass controls their own destiny in Reg D. If they win out, they will be the 1 seed. They have the toughest remaining schedule, (Brookville, LCA) so winning out will be very tough. Salem will get the 1 seed IF they win out AND Glass loses a game. Louisa will get the 1 seed IF they win out AND both Glass & Salem lose a game.

I don't see E.C. glass winning out and I am hoping that P.H. of Roanoake can pull off the upset. I would love to see Louisa host all of their playoff games in the region.

I don't think Glass wins out. I do think Salem & Louisa will win out. I've always wanted to see a game at the Jungle, so if that happened I'd be good with it.

I don't think EC glass is that good when compared to Louisa or Salem. I think both teams will big boy them up front as Louisa did last year.

CLASS 4, REGION B:

1T) X-Dinwiddie 29.5 (8-0, at Meadowbrook (1-7) Thursday)
X-Varina 29.5 (8-0, at Patrick Henry (5-3) Friday)
3) X-King George 29.143 (7-0, at Spotsylvania (4-4) Friday)
4) X-Hanover 27.0 (6-2, at Henrico (2-7) Friday)
5) X-Matoaca 25.25 (5-3, vs Hopewell (4-4) Friday)
6) Eastern View 24.667 (7-2, vs Courtland (4-4) Friday)
7) Powhatan 24.375 (6-2, vs Midlothian (7-1) Friday)
8) Patrick Henry 24.0 (5-3, vs Varina (8-0) Friday)

--
9) Courtland 21.25 (4-4, at Eastern View (7-2) Friday)
10) Monacan 20.25 (3-5, at Clover Hill (2-6) Friday)
11) Spotsylvania 20.125 (4-4, vs King George (7-0) Friday)

ANALYSIS: The roll of the unbeatens continues as, this week, Varina catches Dinwiddie for the first place tie, with King George lurking just behind, hoping both the Blue Devils and the Generals fall at some point. If Dinwiddie and Varina run the table, it's advantage Blue Devils, as they would beat two teams with, currently, 13 wins, while the Generals' final two opponents currently have nine. Hanover's dominant win over Patrick Henry puts them in the driver's seat for the #4 seed should the top three win out. The Hawks' two final opponents has four combined wins, but #5 Matoaca's have just five. The Warriors are watching Eastern View, as the Cyclones finish their regular season with 4-4 Courtland. If Eastern View wins, it won't matter what happens to Powhatan or Patrick Henry on Friday. The eight teams would likely be set for the playoffs, with the big question in Week 11 being, what seed will you earn? Monacan and Spotsylvania both have faint heartbeats.

CLASS 4, REGION D: 8-0 Louisa still finds themselves in the #3 position at 26.75 points, trailing both 7-1 teams, E.C. Glass (27.75) and Salem (27.625). Louisa has 7-1 Albemarle for Homecoming on Friday, then face four-win Goochland in their finale. Salem's final two opponents have nine combined wins, while E.C. Glass has 6-2 Brookville and 8-0 Liberty Christian. The Lions may need both teams ahead of them to lose once in order to have a shot at the top seed. If they can at least catch one team, so that they'd be the #2 seed and have two home playoff games in "The Jungle", that would be preferable to a trip out west on November 18th.

King George has only played 7 games and everyone else has played either 8 or 9. What game did KG not play and will they make it up? They nade up the game with Masasaponax so it's not that one. Have a good one!

I'm assuming it's Culpeper County. They're squeezing it in (Nov 1) between dates with Spotsylvania (Oct 28) and Courtland (Nov 4).

I did a max point possibility for Louisa and Salem. This is if all games fall in their favor.

Louisa max points 30
Salem Max points 29.8

So it comes down to who can pull the upset next couple weeks. That's only one win for a non district foe.

I did this at 1:00am so I could have missed something

I would be fine with it too. Salem has lost most of their games at home since 2014
