It proved to be a historic week for the VHSL and the shape of high school sports in the state of Virginia with the news of Liberty being allowed into the VHSL and the door being opened to other private schools that are non-boarding mind you. I couldn't help but ponder myself, how will the Richmond Region schools fare against private schools if and when others join?

12 Richmond Region 5A schools have a history against private schools.

Atlee for starters has played Atlantic Shores and Benedictine. Atlantic Shores came in their first season of varsity play and the Raiders came away with a 24-0 win. Fast forward to 2009 where the Raiders faced off against Benedictine in the first of two meetings. The Raiders outscored Benedictine 56-19 taking both victories in 2009-2010.

Douglas Freeman played the Cadets for 8 straight years from 1972-1979 at a time when Freeman was one of the top teams in the region along with the likes of Highland Springs. Freeman won 7 out of the 8 meetings outscoring the Cadets 213-54.

Glen Allen's only meeting with a private school came not so long ago in 2012 where the Jaguars came out on the losing end of a 7-9 contest with Fredericksburg Christian.

From 1970-1971 Henrico played Benedictine and was undefeated against the Cadets outscoring them 54-13.

Hermitage shutout the Cadets of Benedictine in their only meetings since 1970 outscoring them 65-0 in 2001 and 2002 at the dawn of the Coach Kane era.

Lee-Davis had a long standing series with Benedictine from 1970-1985. The Confederates claimed 13 of the 16 contests outscoring Benedictine 279-138.

Matoaca met Benedictine back in 1970-1971 when they were still a A school. Matoaca was winless against the Cadets being outscored 9-19.

Meadowbrook on the other hand has not lost to the Cadets taking both meetings from 1986-1987 outscoring them 70-20.

Patrick Henry had a somewhat lengthy series with Benedictine from 1970-1983. The Cadets actually lead that series 7-6-1 outscoring the Patriots by just a touchdown 134-127.

Varina met up with Benedictine eight straight years, 1970-1977 when the Blue Devils were still a AA school. Varina trails that series 2-6 with the Cadets outscoring them 133-68.

Prince George squared off with Nansemond Suffolk in 1986 and 1987 and came up winless falling to the Saints by a combined score of 21-74.

Then there is Mills Godwin who has played more private schools than any other Richmond Region school be it 5A or otherwise. The Eagles are 10-11 versus six different private schools.

Against Benedictine the Eagles are 0-1 having been shutout in the one meeting in 1981 0-27.

They shutout Hampton Roads Academy 12-0 in 1981 as well in their only meeting.

Ironically enough they played Liberty in 1986 but at that time Liberty was known as Lynchburg Christian and the Eagles won 41-7 in their only meeting.

The Eagles took down Bishop Sullivan(then Norfolk Catholic) in 1981 14-12.

That same year of 1981, Godwin's first year of play mind you they lost to Trinity Episcopal 8-35.

Godwin's longest series with any private school was with Collegiate from 1994-2010 with the exception of 2001 in which they did not play because of 9/11. The Cougars actually came out on the winning edge of that series 9-7 outscoring the Eagles 412-329.

So for those tallying at home.. The 5A Richmond Region schools are a combined 47-33-1 against the private schools that could someday be playing in the VHSL.
