The Falcon offense went to work in the first quarter and never looked back. Junior quarterback Jake Sturgill went 26 of 31 thru the air for 441 yards passing and five touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion. Sturgill hit senior receiver Derrick Yates for scores of 15, 18 and 54 yards. Junior receiver Jeffrey Wallace caught one touchdown pass of 10 yards and junior running back Matthew Fulton added an 80-yard touchdown reception on the first play of the second half before coach Darren Reed pulled all of the starters from the game.

The 6-foot-4 Yates exploited the secondary of the Bearcats with big catch and runs all night. Wallace caught five passes for 66 yards while senior receiver Mason Widner caught seven passes for 70 yards and junior Chris DeSalvo added 63 yards on four catches. Yates capped the night off by being crowned homecoming king in front of a packed Abingdon grandstand.

The Falcon defense held the Bearcats in check all night. The Bearcats took the opening kickoff and drove to the Abingdon 22 before turning the ball over on downs. Abingdon then drove the field in six place resulting in the first touchdown of the night for Yates. The Falcon defense then failed to give up another first-down until late in the game. Holding the Bearcats to six first downs, 81 yards rushing and 58 yards passing.

The Falcon defense kept the Bearcats off the field most of the night and gave up the only Bearcat score with under two minutes remaining the game. Seniors Tyson Roberts and Justin Fannon lead the defense. Sophomore defensive back Max Yates was assigned to 6-foot-7 Bearcat receiver Jordan Sewell and his longest catch of 12 yards was caught in the opening drive.

The Falcon’s will face a showdown with Southwest District rival Richlands (7-1) next week at Ernie Hicks stadium in Richlands. The two of the best teams in SWVA will get it under way at 7:30. The Blue Tornados will be looking for revenge from last year’s loss to Abingdon while the Falcons will be looking for respect.

Gonna be one heck of a show this Friday. Two very good jr qbs going at it. Very similar teams with weapons all over the field. Which defense will step up? I would probably give the defensive edge to Richlands. Although an impressive showing for Abingdon against Virginia by shutting down Sewell like they did. Wouldnt surprise me to see 700 yds of passing in this game. Safe travels to all the Falcons coming down this Friday. Im sure they will bring a good crowd.
