Just a shout out to my Giles Spartan friends coming across the mountain , it's time for the annual slobberknocker. Always my favorite game on the schedule. Good Football, Good Friends, and Good Fun . Travel safe .

I'm assuming you were disappointed by half of the good football part. BBurg had fun I'm sure, but Giles not so much. No argument on the friends part! Not sure we tackled Taquez once. Giles is young and inexperienced. We have a lot of growing up to do this year. Hopefully it happens quickly. Not sure where you got the PA announcer. I think he thought he was doing radio color commentary. Somewhat obnoxious compared to our guy who just announces the game. Johnson is a good QB and has good receivers. The best I can say is that we could handle the BBurg 2nd team O and D. Refs were flag happy in the first part of the game, mostly against BBurg. I have seen less flags in parades.

I'm no fan of the announcer myself, I think he talks to hear himself. Best of luck to the Spartans the rest of the season . Go Big Red

The PA announcer at Giles is one of the best around because he announces to the entire crowd, not just the Giles side. Too many want to add their own commentary.

I like PA announcers that are homers and interested first and foremost in their team, their fans. I love home field PA announcer bias. It adds to the experience of an away game. An away game experience should not be miserable for visiting fans or players, but it shouldn't be comfortable either.

Miserable/Unethical is..
1. Horn or train whistle or PA guy talking while visiting team is at line of scrimmage. After the huddle is broken, it should be quite with exception of fan noise.
2. PA guy overtly questioning/challenging the officiating.

Uncomfortable for visiting fans that is awesome and ethical in my opinion is...
1. PA guy encouraging his team, yep....even with a statement like, "come on defense, we need a stop here!" Or..."come on fans, let's make some noise and get on your feet!"
2. PA guy purposely loud when his teams makes a play and is quick to call out the name and number, and......a PA announcer that is pretty quiet and maybe even absolutely silent when the visiting teams makes a play or scores, and he doesn't even acknowledge the other teams players/numbers/names when they make a play.

The above is my take on it. I think it should be uncomfortable for visiting fans with the PA guy, but not miserable or unethical. Why do I feel that way? As Americans, we have come to the point where we ALWAYS have to be comfortable and our KIDS must always be comfortable as a whole. Clearly, exceptions to the above exist, but when kids become adults, they realize life isn't always comfortable and presents incredible challenges. A little adversity or discomfort early on helps them steamroll through adversity when they become adults compared to those who have fa Ed little to any adversity in their youth. When the visiting team is in the huddle, I would fire up the train horn every single play, but....when they break it, time to turn it off.

You would absolutely love Grundy's then...

I can't count the number of times I've wanted to throat punch that guy the two times I have visited there. Lol

Two years ago, he literally said not paraphrasing exactly, but something to the effect of... "Well, that sure looked like a pass interference on the Wolfpack there, but no flag, so I guess we'll keep playing."

Man, I hate that guy.

We can agree to disagree. There is a fine line between making the visiting team and fans "uncomfortable" and being unethical. Most homer PA announcers do not know where that line is. Ignoring other teams numbers or scores is just being disrespectful to the visiting side who purchased tickets. I won't go to visiting stadiums and pay money if the announcer doesn't give the visiting team the time of day. After 47 years, I know who they are and I avoid them. The PA announcer sets the tone for what the fans do and say. If visitors are welcomed they are likely to be welcomed by the home fans. Saying "come on fans lets make some noise" is perfectly fine because it is a POSITIVE thing to encourage but making anyone uncomfortable is not something that should be encouraged for any reason..

Also..most horn blowers cannot help themselves with the big game on the line in the 4th. They are fine most of the game but then blow the horn with the visiting team at the line in order to disrupt cadence to try and help their team. I've seen this happen year after year and have complained about it on here many times.

IMO it's more important to to teach our students sportsmanship and how to act with class. Excusing bad behavior by saying it teaches how to overcome adversity later in life seems counterproductive to me and it tells visitors they are not welcome which is stupidity. Most high schools want all the ticket sales they can get. Visiting fans should be welcomed with open arms and appreciated, not denigrated.

Intrinsic. I respect your opinion, but...we disagree. I don't think fans blowing a horn to disrupt cadence is bad behavior. Only my opinion. I agree most or many PA announcers don't know the line of unethical vs making the visitors not so comfortable.

SWVA Havok. I would not like the Grundy PA guy. Like I mentioned earlier, questioning the officiating by use of the public microphone is unethical and that is blatantly wrong.

Lucas..I agree that fans individually blowing a horn or any noisemaker is fine. The more the better whether its my team or the other team. I like enthusiasm for ones team and noisemakers have a role in that.

It's the train horn I have always a problem with. It's against VHSL rules btw but thats an argument for another day. It's fine most of the time, introductions, between plays etc. but when they use it as a weapon to disrupt cadence is where it crosses the line. I have noticed most of them cannot hold it back when it is at the end of the game and everything is on the line. I think we agree based on what you said in the original post above. Right?.
