Where did you find this?

Deven Dews finally makes a list? FINALLY??? He goes ignored in these type of things. SMH

Why is Buster only on Defense? He was only on defense Part Time. They did the same thing with all conference. He was Defensive player of the year on that list?

Where is Devon Graves (CB) for the Raiders? Dude was a LOCK down corner and probably the fastest kid on the Raiders. Guess what? He is a sophomore!!!!

Where are our OLineman on this list? Did we not win States? Pretty sure our QB and RBs had to get some protection from somewhere?

I feel Matt Page (QB) gets shafted to much on these list. He had a strong year and broke school passing yards record, passed for 1000 yards in the Post season. Not to mention rushed for 800 yards or so. He finished season with 2100 yards passing.

I think that Coach Smith pulling players out early after leads causes list like this to be developed. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH HIS DECISION THOUGH. I would rather our kids have RINGS on fingers and pulled out of games early to keep them healthy anyways. Not being prideful or boasting.....Im just saying....

Don't put too much weight in these lists. There are A LOT of politics that goes into deciding these lists. The process that the VHSL designates isn't the best. The main deciding factor on who makes these lists is stats so if a player is consistently pulled early his numbers will be affected by it. Unfortunately, these lists don't take into the consideration the intangibles. I posted an in depth expn the 4A board. You should check it out. It's titled 4A VHSL All-State Team.

Some surprising results of the voting. Hard to believe Appomattox had no one on first team offense.
I'm surprised by that too. They had some serious playmakers. I guess they didn't get picked because they didn't "carry the team" like Mann, Manns, Ragland, or JLA. Those guys were essential to their teams success. Appo would have won state even without one of their stars.

Lot of good QBs in 2A this season. If I had a vote I would have voted for Appomattox QB. He may not have had stats as some of them did, but he QB'd his team to a state championship.

He didnt have the stats because Coach pulled him out to keep him healthy, but Good observation HR6. JLA is a great QB, but he was not mobile like Page. JLA and Page had similar numbers in that game. Page being a mobile QB had a lot to do with the result of the Richlands game. That DL was strong and had Page on the run a lot in that game. A Richlands fan said it best before the game in this forum, "You best believe both QBs will be in game 4 qtrs." He was right.

Joe Reed from Randolph Henry got 1st team All conference (Page was 2nd), he is a UVA commit for I think baseball. They moved him from WR to QB this year. He had to stay in the game all year because R.H. didnt have the talent to aid him much. Of coarse his stats was gonna look great. Joe is a phenomenal athlete regardless.

Coach Smith unlocked the HUDL account like he does after the season. You can go to roster and see any of the players highlights. Go look at them if you wish.

This post has a little weight to it....

Buster Henderson was a work horse at WR and I wouldnt have wanted to see the team without him. Great route runner and juke moves to get open. Great leader on the field. We had a few receivers late in season that added ammo to our arsenal.

OL were Juniors so the OL (1 Sr, 1 sophomore) will be bigger stronger next year.

I know we didnt have a quality QB if Page would have went down. We had a sophomore that I feel will be ready next year, but I feel he would need a little more work to lead if he had to go in this year. Last year, Page went down with a collarbone injury late in the Nottoway game and we rode with Deion Edwards (Senior) for rest of the season. They put Page back in vs. Gretna and he jarred his injury with a run up middle during 3rd qtr. Went back to Edwards for rest of season.

I truly feel coach smith was inspired to have made the motto PO1 (POWER OF 1) this season, because that is exactly what this team thrived on.

I also want to say that our Defense won many of our games by getting our Offense back on the field. This was one of the best defenses I have seen in high school football. It was a joy to watch them shut down 4 Single Wing type teams this year (Amherst, Clarke, William Campbell, Gap).

I will take the success of Appomattox's team over individual awards any day. when the conference awards came out he Coach Smith told the team not to be disappointed because they didn't get some of these awards, because a lot is based on individual stats, he used the example that he utilized four running backs not one. In my opinion QB Matt Page best asset was his decision making he took what the defense gave him, he would take a sack or get what he could get, punt the ball and live to fight another day, and he got better each game saving his best performance for the last game.

You're doing it every day and I appreciate that. Stats is a supporting argument but NOT the primary factor. You should know that at this point. This is about respect, opinion, reputation, years of service and credibility among the Coaches. Long respected Coaches with years of service that place one player over another at the start (District and Conference Teams) are the biggest impacters and have the most Coach participation. This is the place All-States are determined. Can't be All-Regione without being All-Conferenece. Can't be All-State without being All Region.

Most All-States are chosen by Coachs on a small committee that have never seen those selections play a down. That's just a fact. Stats help support their final decisions but is barely the reason they are on the final selection list in the first place.

I just went back and looked at our stuff. Asbury played in 34 quarters out of a possible 52. That's 4 1/2 games worth of time he didn't play because we were up too much. He was averaging around 250 a game playing 2 quarters. If he plays full out in all 13 games, he may have 6000 yards and 75 touchdowns.

I'm not saying Page wasn't good, because we all know how good he is. But numbers wise, there wasn't a better QB in 2A than JLA.

I really wasnt talking about JLA as much as I was speaking to our All Conference picks. I feel Page was the best all around QB in our conference. I also think Delonta Kelso was the best LB in 2A, but I dont see him lit up on list either.

By far, JLA was the more accurate QB (probably had better vision as well), but like I have told you guys before the Appo game, I wanted to see him crack under pressure, because in his highlights they show him playing 7 on 7 back there with a phenomenal O Line in front. When we did give him pressure, he threw some balls that were not quite in the hands of the receivers. Some balls were caught but defense played well enough to knock balls out. I feel that JLA's inability to move around hinders him. Im not mad at him one bit! If I didnt have to move, I wouldnt either. He had a great feel for pressure though (I admire that), when it came he would get ball out quickly or he would throw a pass that he normally wouldnt throw. JLA is going to grow and Im looking fwd to seeing what is in store for him in future. I dont have a quarrel with him winning this award at all. He deserves it.

This Junior has to be one of the best LBs out there in Virginia? Where is his name on this list?
FLAWED SYSTEM!
Delonta Kelso

Fine athlete. Type of drive you want on your team and his tackling technique is perfection. Very, very good player at a 2A HS level. At that level, he may be among the best.

But thinking he is among the best LB's in VA at 5'10 and 175 is a severe lack of perspective. If you want to see linebackers, just go to Sherando the last two years. Dylan Rivers and George Aston. Those highlights should help.

I was talking 2A, but im pretty sure he could play on 3 and 4 A as well at LB.

I would love to hear what the numbers of ur back up qb were or yall prob stuck to ground game to run out clock?

I was told that Coach Smith was not at the all region meeting. Any truth to this?[/QUO

Coaches do not have to physically attend these type of meetings. They can send in their votes electronically. I'm not saying that is what Coach Smith did, I'm just saying that it is not necessary to physically attend these meeting to recommend players.

These meetings allow coaches to get together and lobby for their players and lay out the case that, a lot of times, stats cannot tell. One other item to think about is that this team is created by a group of coaches that, for the most part did not get a chance to see Appomattox, Buckingham, or any of the Conference 37 teams during the season. Buckingham, for example, played a schedule that included just 3 teams in 2A West this year (Chatham, Randolph Henry and Appomattox). Appomattox played no one outside of Buckingham and the Dogwood district. So, with the rather large reasons, it is sometimes extremely difficult for coaches to be able to stay up to do date with teams all throughout the state. Appomattox had a phenomenal team, but when you're sitting in a meeting (especially one that is occuring as the playoffs are still going on) you are left with just stats from Appomattox vs. most likely having seen film on some of the farther western teams or, most likely, having seen those players in person. Does it suck? Yeah it does, but what can ya do? This is why the proposed 4 region set up may be a bit better. You know all of the teams in your area better, but that is a whole other subject for debate.

When a coach does not physically attend meeting, it hurts players on his team.

If a team is in the hunt for state championship, by end of season a coach should have seen most of the top teams in the state. It's called Scouting. When Gretna was "in the hunt", I had seen all of the top teams by the week 14.

Seeing some top teams does not have enough collation to seeing "top" players. For example, in 2013, Chancellor had one of the top rated OLinemen in the Country in Steven Moss. They won one game. Rockbridge had Austin Clarke. They won 2 games.

If you want your kids represented, the Coachs need to get it done at the Conference, District and Regional levels because, honestly, the All-Staters are pretty much picked by a very small group with only 1st team All Regional selections as their pool of players. The selling is already over. Most All-Staters are Seniority and reputation. The Coachs selecting have probably actually seen only half of the choices available.

Need to have some players from teams that didn't go far in the playoffs. Playoff stats should and will always be considered but some other players don't have the luxury of playoff stats. Regular season stats should be key also and team value should come into effect. Many really good players are slighted by this. Even the ones with the better season stats than most playoff teams. Some players that beat out players in conference positions got slighted for the all 2A west? Really?

All players in the region should be taken into account when giving out these awards not just because they won state. Some players had better regular season stats than others on this list. Some actually won conference awards over some of these kids and aren't on this list. Richlands thought their whole team should be in the conference 39 awards. The nominated 13-16 players out of the 22 and got mad because they didn't get ALL of them.

I would actually like to find stats for these players. I know one kid who got all conference 39 WR and had 51/receptions for 1189 yards and 12 TDs in the regular season as a sophomore and didn't make this list. He also lead the Roanoke times in yardage was second in receptions tied for third on ypc. He was also 2nd team all conference last year as a freshman posting almost 700 yards and 6 TDs. I would really like to see the "stats" for the regular season please.

Oh and the mighty Richlands is in our conference too!

All Conference and All-Region teams are picked before the playoffs. If you're not First team, all conference, you can't be considered for first team all region. If you're not first team all region, you cannot be considered for All State.

In other words, playoff stats are not considered.

This kid was first team all conference. I also can't find stats for any of the rest of them either. So I really don't have anything to go by no one is willing to post REGULAR season stats.

We know the kid you're talking about is your kid. So, with that said, of course you know the exact stats. But most people don't keep up with everyone's stats for the year like a parent may. So you talking on a message board about how we won't give stats is odd. 90% of us on this board probably don't have stats like that. Just my opinion of how I see this situation.
