What players/teams make the cut?

Teams:
1. 2017 Louisa
2. 2015 Salem (ranked higher because I didn’t see the 2016 team play in person)
3. 2013 Dinwiddie
4. 2014 Lake Taylor
5. 2016 Salem

Players:
1. DeAngelo Ramsey-Salem
2. Brandon Smith- Louisa County/Penn State
3. K'Vaughan Pope- Dinwiddie/Ohio State
4. Malik Clements- GW Danville/Cincinnati/CFL
5. Wayne Davis-Lake Taylor/Ohio State/JMU

Good topic.

I went to eat last night with my friends and their son who was on the 2016-17 Salem squads. He asked me which of Salem's teams from '15-'17 did I think was the best and I told him I thought '17. All 3 teams were good so it's hard to say, but '15 had the best defense, '17 had the best offense, and '16 was pretty balanced offense/defense. All 3 teams just had different guys step up and make plays when they needed to be made. I really think Delo was the one player that put Salem over the top in '15 & '17. He and Alex were very difficult to contain from their DE spots in '15. In '17 Delo was difficult to stop from his RB spot. There were so many exceptional players from those squads and each squad figured out how to win the title.

I think the '12 Briar Woods team was probably the best of the decade in C4, with Dinwiddie '13, Lake Taylor '14 , pick your favorite Salem squad, and maybe Louisa '17 rounding out the Top 5. (Simply because they were runner up rather than champion)

A couple of players I'd throw into the mix would be Newton (LT) and Beck (Blacksburg) that could be considered in the Top 5-10.

Thanks Mike! That 2015 Salem team was really good and they were very young in a lot of spots. The 2017 team really jelled at the end of the year. I saw them play Dinwiddie in the beginning of the year and GW and Louisa in the playoffs. They looked like 2 totally different teams.

DLo Ramsey is one of the best players of the past 20 years IMO. I’ve seen the David Wilson’s and Vic Hall’s and Cedric Peerman’s of the world. DLo is in that same breath. Once in a generation player.

There has been so many big time players, any top 5 will be subjective. I believe Cole Beck is definitely a top 5 player and if we’re taking it back pre 2013 then I believe you have to put Brenden Motley (Christiansburg) and the numerous playmakers from Briar Woods in there. Lake Taylor has had so many that they could very easily dominate a top 10 list by themselves.

McSorley (BW 10-13) and Sedarius Williams (Din) were game changers too.

I know on this board we try not to bring down the kids but Newton was done at half time against EV - maybe he had so Many offers he didn’t want to get hit anymore not sure but - #1 for lake Taylor won that game and if he hadn’t gotten hurt in the championship game I believed lake Taylor would have one - just one guys opinion not worth anything more - he also played defense

so many unsung hero’s on these teams - if you don’t go to the games you’d never know from the boards and recruiting sites

I hear what you're saying and Javon Harvey was definitely very influential for the Titans - - Coach Hank Sawyer raved about his versatility before Harvey moved on to ODU.

But one could argue that Newton is as productive as just about any two-way player in Class 4 since realignment took place.

Consider the numbers...

Newton Career Totals entering senior year:
545 rushes for 5165 yards, 75 TD’s in 41 games.

Newton Year-by-Year breakdown:
Freshman - 13 total TD's (12 rushing; 1 receiving)... 137Car. 1112Yds. 12TD's
Sophomore - 36 total TD's (31 rush, 4 receiving, 1 INT)... 195Car. 1993Yds. 31TD's
Junior - 37 total TD's (32 rush, 4 receiving, 1 INT)... 213Car. 2060Yds. 32TD's; 15Rec. 319Yds. 4TD's; 57 tackles, 6 INT's for 152 yards

* Newton rushed for 141 yards and a TD on 22 attempts to go with a 30-yard TD catch and 2 INT's on defense in the State Finals vs. Tuscarora

To get to 3rd in VHSL history in rushing yards - he'd need 2263 as a senior by my count. That would pass him among the greats in Tidewater area history like Terry Kirby (Tabb) and Elan Lewis (Phoebus).
