It’s been way too many months since we witnessed football in the late summer and fall like we should. I know everyone is ready to fire back up with the practices to get this thing started. With that said who are the standouts from each region and why?
Region A- I am kind of blind here with so many of the historically strong teams not playing in the spring. Does that effect them to start this season or do we see Essex lead a very strong contingent from the region back to the state stage to compete for and advance to the championship?
Region B- Riverheads should have many returning pieces but how do they gel with a slightly different stable of running backs. Buffalo Gap may make noise as well since they will join their cross county rival in Class 1. I would look to see what was a young Sussex team when we last saw them back in contention (sledge hammers is an understatement for their ability to hit). Not sure what Franklin is bringing back so unless someone has insight for me it’s a wait and see on them. Altavista, Central Lunenburg and William Campbell always play a tough schedule so any one of them can make a run.
Region C- I think Galax may actually step back just slightly if the group at GW can get it rolling. Good skill players on both teams but the edge has to go to GW with the slightly more experienced QB and Galax losing some line play from the spring. All due respect to Narrows but I am pretty sure a good bit of talent graduated so this may be a development year for them. Giles has a tremendous upside but are the hallways really being recruited hard enough to get those athletes from years past on the field for them. PM and Auburn with new coaches are interesting but would be shocking if they were to make a significantly deep run.
Region D- Who steps into the void? Really puzzling to me as there have been some significant graduations at the schools that were successful in the spring and a couple programs that had a surprisingly successful shortened season that ended a tad bit short of most of our predictions. Someone more familiar can add context but it should be a wild Wild West in what I think will be a transition season for SWVA in Class 1 and could see a new face representing.
