The Madison at Stonewall game has been postponed because the officials failed to show up tonight. The game has been on the officials schedule since day 1.

I would say if no refs showed it is probably on the AD. We had a middle school game where only one ref showed up. He tried his best but it got so rough in the 4th qtr that he walked off the court because he didn't want someone to get injured.

Funny that this happened at Stonewall because it reminds me of a story that I have told on here before that also involved Stonewall. Many years ago, even back before their new gym was built, we had a game up there and no one showed up to referee the JV game. After a delay of maybe half an hour or so, one of their assistant coaches or something strapped on a whistle and that one guy called that game better than I have seen three people call one. He was a Preps member at the time and might still be.

Their admin were insistent that the ref association was in error, not the school. Who knows? But it is unacceptable either way. Saunders was so mad after their loss at MC a couple of weeks ago...someone JOKED that he did this just to make MC have to travel over there two times! The game was rescheduled for Thursday. Hope someone notified the officials!!!!

Wasn’t Joe O'Donnell was it?

Refs are horrible in the state of Virginia. If you want to see a basketball game with ANY flow and rhythm, go south! Every ref I’ve seen this year in a VHSL game, has made the game about them or was WAYYYYYY out of shape to even call a game. Why is this important!?! When they get tired, they’ll find anything to blow the whistle about.

There is a huge shortage of officials in Virginia and nationwide. There are lots of reasons for this. One main one is reading the previous comments about refs. The fan behavior is horrible. When a ref does a rec. league game and calls a walk on a kid and the 12 year old kid walks by and says to me, that wasn't a f____king walk old man. Why would anyone want to put their selves in this position for a few $$$$. The coaches behavior is worse than the fans and players combined. Just my thoughts from experience on people that want to bash refs. Grab a whistle and a shirt and give it a try. Your patience and thickness of skin will be tested to the limits.

If you know the game and show the game, kids and coaches respect.. You’ll get the same respect back. A lot of what I’ve seen is officials making it all about them. If a kid, parent or spectator is acting in the behavior you mentioned, they should be kicked out of the game. If I pay $7 for a ticket, I don’t want to see a foul fest.. I wanna see a ball game!

No way on the respect deal you are talking about. Wish it was that way. I have been either playing, coaching or officiating since 1965. I think I know the game pretty well. When a kid slams another kid to the floor and you call a foul on the kid and the coach goes off, the parents cuss you and the player slams the ball to the ceiling. I think society has behavior issues. The old saying that kids learn what they live shows it ugly side when sports are involved.

Same thing happened with Millbrook away game at Culpeper. Same problem two nights in a row. And both times, slightly nasty comments on official social media accounts from schools, so I don't think it was the athletic director's fault.

If a kid, coach or fan comes at a ref like that then they should be disqualified from the game point blank. I think what refs do are admirable, but what I’ve seen in Virginia this year and the past few years (which were bad but not as bad as this year) is down right horrible! I’ve seen refs showing the kids and coaches up. At the GW/Salem football game this past November, one of the refs went at one of the parents and told him to “shut the f*** up” “you’re going to lose anyway”, and taunted the GW parent with looks. I get it that kids, parents and coaches can get disrespectful, but from what I’ve observed.. Refs are either the ring leader of the disrespect, try to take the spotlight from the kids, and/or HAVE ZERO BUSINESS CALLING A GAME!

Agree 100% with comments about behavior of fans/parents/players/coaches.

I see kids “walk over” an opponent on the floor almost every game (ala the Kansas fight); the players reactions to a foul called on them is often technical worthy; and the language is horrible.

Fans/Parents are often HORRIBLE. I think every school should tape the parents in the stands every game. Then show that tape the next day to these parents. I’m sure most would be absolutely embarrassed by their own actions.

There are several very good officiating crews in the Piedmomt Association. I’m glad when I see them show up. However, there are 3 officials that I cringe when I see.

All this is probably, and unfortunately, a product of the times we are now living in.

I have been watching basketball for over 50 years (never played or coached) but I can certainly agree the atmosphere and behaviors have changed. In the old days, you had to raise your hand when a foul was called on you and if you didn't, it was a technical. I guess coaches occasionally got Ts but I remember very few back in the good old days.

As for fans being tossed out, I can count the number of times I have seen that happen on one hand. But I do have to agree that everybody gets sooooooo much more emotionally involved than they used to.

The one thing that is mentioned on here that I have to admit that I DON'T see here in the valley is referees that make it all about themselves. We used to have one that might have fit that description but he has been out of circulation for years.

Granted we have some around here that sometimes look like it is their first game, but that is a matter of competence and keeping control of a game, not about personal arrogance or behavior.

I have seen one fan removed this year, and it was a deputy that escorted him out. My favorite fan ejection was one time a few years back. The ref threw him out, and held up the game while school administrators escorted him out. On his way out, he mooned the ref.

Although I did not personally witness it, I have heard enough versions of this story to believe it is true that once upon a time a female fan slapped a referee after a game. There were charges filed according to what I heard and she was banned permanently from that particular school, which was not the school where her child played. I have no idea if she was banned from her home school or other schools as well.

In high school ball the officials cannot throw out a fan. The official has to go to game administration and request the fan be removed.
In Bedford County Rec Basketball this year a new rule has been put in place. If a fan or coach has a kid playing and either one gets tossed from a game, the kid has go home with the parents. Heard this has calmed thing down considerably.
I have never been mooned before when a fan was asked to leave.

Wise Central and Lee High shot a combined 75+ free throws Tuesday night... this should never happen.
The referees do not commit the fouls. Some games the kids just go crazy with fouling. If the fouls called keep one kid from getting hurt from rough play, then the fouls are justified.

The commissioner for the association must have overlooked the game. Happened in Roanoke in football a few years ago.

Well the officials and their association apparently deserve an apology for the Madison- Stonewall game Tuesday night.

The date was changed from Wednesday to Tuesday about a month ago. Somebody (the SJ AD?) forgot to inform the association.

So fair is fair, sorry about the disparaging words Zebras! Mia Culpa!

By the way, Madison beat Stonewall by 11 tonight...even being short handed due to the flu bug hitting them.

No biggie. We all can make a mistake. After all we are human.

Not sure if this is the situation you speak of, but a few years ago, the mother or grandmother one, of Wise Central's coach physically assaulted an official after a game in the Grand holiday tournament up at UVa-Wise. She was subsequently banned permanently from all events from the Prior Center at UVa-Wise.

Schoolboard .. how does a slightly nasty social media comment make IT NOT THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR'S FAULT?

2 DIFFERENT ASSOCIATIONS

The Madison/Stonewall was 100% ON ADMIN FROM SJ

The Millbrook game was at Culpeper. That is a different association from the one that does Stonewall.

First, I never said it was the same official association. I just pointed out that it happened twice in same week. Normally, official school sites are very bland and are not critical of refs, opposing schools, law enforcement, or anyone they will need to rely on again. So it just seemed unlikely they would blast the officials if there was any question who was at fault.
