42 to 26 raiders win.Have to threw out this one comment. After what i saw tonight, if the raiders are the best team in 2A this year then we really have a weak year in 2A FOOTBALL. I might have to eat this statement but after seeing them in person tonight don't think they will win the state again this year

Not an Appo fan but does your statement go down better with mustard or ketchup? No doubt everyone else is still chasing Appo.

Appo was way off their game tonight. Tonight was not even close to their normal game play, just not clicking or something.

Appomattox must not have been on their game tonight. Didn't put JV in like they do every other game in first quarter. They should have beat Gretna by 200 points like they will do every other team. Big thing I didn't like is the huddle and chanting and screaming during the national anthem but guess that's better than taking knees.

Every week is a wait and see experience. Still, it was a fun game to watch.

The officiating crew was about the worst I have ever witnessed tonight. I usually reserve my bitching and moaning about the crew but damn, they were bad.

Now we complain about refs because we didn't win by enough.

I'll say this, every area has people who complain about officials. It's funny to be around those people, hear them whine all the time and don't know what they are talking about. When you know, you can call the right penalties on your own team.

I'd be willing to be that 95% of time that what is called was a penalty, and that goes for any game. I know the rules pretty well. I have people in stands and press box ask me what that was, why that was called, etc. So yes I know them. And guess what? The officials know them A LOT better than me or ANYONE on here

Were you at the game tonight?

I just have the opinion that every team deserves an even playing field. Simple as that.

I was at the game. Gretna had way more penalties called against them. Funny part is Gretna defensive lineman shot in backfield and was plum tackled from behind by lineman at qb feet and Appo fans were booing the call. If not for penalties this game would have been even closer. Not to say refs did a bad job.

No I wasnt. But like I said, doesnt matter the game AT LEAST 95% of time the officials are right. I have family in Appo and keep an eye on their scores because I want them to win.

Triust me, I have a bunch of rule books in my home, I know them well, and they know A LOT more than I do, but they are human and can make mistakes.

It gets under my skin to see people blame the officials for a loss, and even more so on why a team didnt win by more. Take a win or lose with grace and not blame

Gretna had more than five flags. I can remember 3 or 4 holding flags off top of my head, 3 false starts, and a 15 yard personal for hitting punt returner on fair catch. That's just off top of my head.

Not sure of the stats in lynchburg paper yet. I will watch the game this evening and review the flags. Personally I saw #5 being held every time he got into gretna backfield and holding was only called one time!

There were some calls each way but I do think there were some missed that Appocould have benifitted from.
One TD called back for each team.
Appo was out of their prayer / huddle just before the janthem. Not much but before. They had no idea though, they were behind bleachers getting ready to take the field.

The paper was correct after reviewing game. But Appo had nine for 70 yards and Gretna 5 for 50. Gretna had 3 holding calls and Appo also 3 holding calls. Each had 15 yard penalties, Gretna hitting fair catch and Appo pass interference.Appomattox had 5 offsides calls, four on defense and Gretna 1. The offsides calls are pretty evident. Besides the offsides the flags were even. Gretna actually made alot of mistakes and blew alot of opportunities or this game could have went the other way. Second play of game Gretna throws interception right to numbers of defender with no recievers around setting Appointments up near their red zone and for first touchdown. At 14-0 Appo, Gretna drives the field in second quarter and had drops on 3rd and 4th down inside the 20. They get ball back, drive back down field and had two recievers open inside 10 on long pass and they both bump each other trying to make catch. Then with 40 seconds left in half playing prevent defense let App recievers get behind them for long term to go up 21-0. After recovering onside kick to start 3rd quarter, Gretna throws another int right to Appo leading to another score now 28-0. Then Gretna scores two quick TDs to make game 28-12. They immediately hold Appo to punt but fakes punt and scores.

There was one pass to Graves and he was hit by Hawk defender. The defender was spot on timing when he hit Graves so no flag. People around me swore that to be interference, but I saw it as no foul.

That play was clean.
No to sure about the pass interference we got called for, it appeared their feet got tangled up and the hawk player fell.

Gunz always comes on here calling out people for complaining about refs. I will say this....I did see on FB people complaining many times about refs during this game. Was I there, NO! But...Gunz....GET OVER IT!!! Some games are called poorly. Im over it now, but I will NEVER say I have seen a game called more poorly than Appo/Giles in 2013 playoffs. I truly feel there were many plays that I saw on film and in person called incorrectly and the offsides was on Giles and not us. Some were on plays we could have scored or pushed towards a better field position. Gunz....u will never convince me that some games are called fair and square. Refs are human and they miss things and guess what....its natural. Look how many plays are overturned in NFL because they miss it? So I guess they get it all right in High School and not in NFL...my bad.

Not that this happened in this game, but referencing how NFL refs make bad calls and have replay.....I was talking to someone the other week and made the comment of I dont understand how high school refs can call targeting and eject a player when in the NCAA and NFL all targeting calls are reviewed. Without instant replay youre ejecting a kid because you think they targeted, and the actuality is maybe they did, maybe they didnt. All up to the refs belief.

I think you must have missed the point. I never said they were always right. Never have I said that, what I have consistently said since before any of you guys were on here is that I hate seeing complaining about it, especially to justify when you didn't beat a team by more. You won, move on. It doesn't matter one iota if it's by 1 or 60.

In MY opinion, there hasn't been a game played that the refs cost a team a game. A team shouldn't let it come down to a human call to determine an outcome. Are there plays that are calls wrong, ABSOLUTELY.

And you don't think that 95% of time that officials know the rules better than some guy in the stands? You are crazy then. Just because someone misses something or calls something that isn't doesn't mean they know the rules. A lot of these things are judgement calls, and can be called either way. If the bad call didn't go against your team, most time you don't keep it in your mind or certainly complain about it. There is also the difference in the way one person calls certain things compared to another person.

There are things in a rule book that a lot of people don't know about. Just because I know these things doesn't mean I am smarter than someone else, it means I studied it more. And that's not my job, it is theirs so they obviously know it.

If you want a perfect example of things being different between persons and how they are called, look at the Seahawks. Pete Carroll gives him players scouting reports on the refs. They pros can miss just like high school guys, but they are at the top of their craft, and even they have tendencies on how they call things. So they have scouting reports to know what is and isn't allowed by that crew.

Bottom line, it doesn't look good to complain the refs cost you a game, and even worse that they cost you a chance to beat someone worse

They called a personal foul on Graves for a tackle ins reciever. I'm sorry but when a runner ducks from a hit and drops himself and you helmet to helmet him that should not be called.

Helmet to helmet will almost always be called.

What does chasing have to do with winning the state. You either win it or lose it..simple as that
"Chasing" is a metaphor used to compare teams in sports. Appo "raised the bar" (another metaphor) in 2A football and is clearly still the "front runner" (methaphor) until another team beats them. Hope this helps.

Appomattox was unaware that the national anthem was playing at the time.

An Appomattox lineman was called for holding that brought back a touchdown but film provided proof that the lineman hadn’t come close to holding, an interception was taken away by a bogus pass interference call(if anything it should have been called on the offense) that led to another gretna touchdown, an Appomattox returner was harassed after a play was over and no unsportsmanlike conduct was called on the guy who shoved the returner back on the ground, the nose guard jumped offsides coming even with the center and the reds called a false start on Appomattox, and while I’m pretty sure I’m missing something else, this is enough proof of a poor officiating performance. Btw many high school refs are not very good at offiating and often forget rules (hense the reason they can’t get to a higher level of officiating).

LMAO.......so every bad call just happened to go against Appo, yea right. In High School football there is a penalty on every play, just a matter of which ones they call.

Your opinion may be different if you were there and then had the whole game to review at home.

So you are seriously trying to tell me that every bad call went against Appo? That stinks worse than the dairy farm near the field.

I'm telling you alot of bad calls against appo after reviewing film.

They called a personal foul on Graves for a tackle ins reciever. I'm sorry but when a runner ducks from a hit and drops himself and you helmet to helmet him that should not be called.

If the proper tackling technique is used the defender would’ve still avoided helmet to helmet. THAT is why it is always called when helmet to helmet.

You are supposed to keep your head up and see what you’re hitting. Not drop your head, which unfortunately 75% of athletes little league to the pros still do.

Actually, a lot of them do officiate college games. But you're missing the whole point. I'm sure there were bad calls, but it doesn't matter. The game, score, nothing is going to change. So while all of these may be true, whining about them doesn't change the outcome. Like I said, I have family in Appomattox and want to see them do well.

I just have an issue with people complaining about officials and blaming them for losses and why they didn't beat a team by more. What I see when reading that is not giving the other team credit for a win or a closer game. I have been here A LOT longer than any of you, and have said the same thing since day 1, so it has nothing to do with Appomattox or Gretna, it's the subject.

And I will give you a little background on the subject. A few years ago, I was at a playoff game with my team. The absolute worst call I have ever witnessed. It was a 0-0 game and the opposing team "scored" with about 45 seconds left. I was right at the fence at goalie. The player didn't get in, but the part that was worse, is while the officials decided if he got in (It was close so a judgement call) they never stopped the clock. So 45 seconds turned to 7 seconds. And I didn't come on here and complain. Because while I say 99.9 % he wasn't in, and will go to my grave believing that. That call didn't cost them the game, they had 47+ minutes to make sure that call didn't change the outcome.

When your driving for a guys hips and HE lowers right before impact and put his head down that is pretty much unavoidable. If HE ducks his head at contact and there is helmet to helmet if anyone, he should get the flag.
Now a defender goes up and goes right at the head....make the call.

Appo didn't win 2 straight State Titles from bad officiating. Appo is that good. It's hard to pass against them, it's hard to run against them. Period.
