The Best of the 757 Baseball event returns for a third year and the backdrop of Harbor Park should make for an exciting combine. The event gives the top baseball prospects from the Hampton Roads area a chance to compete for the title of Best of the 757 from a variety of skills that encampess a SPARQ score as well as showcases their hitting, fielding, pitching and throwing skills.

Great Bridge infielder Dane Smith made a name for himself will stellar performances in the first two best of the 757 Baseball events. As a freshman, Smith wowed the camp coaches with his infield play and he was one of the top leapers with a height of 31.4. He finished 5th in 2010 with a SPARQ score of 62.1

Last year, he improved his performance and was recognized as one of the Top 10 performers. In fact, he was a candidate for the camp MVP with his times in the SPARQ events and his play at 2nd base. He has unbelievable speed and range and was clearly the top infielder throughout the day.

Smith's confidence spilled over into his sophomore year as he helped the Wildcats to the Eastern Region semi-finals. Smith was selected 2nd team All-Southeastern after batting .303 on the year with 23 hits, 15 runs scored, and eight stolen bases. Smith also added a homerun against Deep Creek.

Clearly, Smith has been one of the Top Performers throughout the Best of the 757 Series and is an early candidate for the Best of the 757's Hall of Fame - Class of 2013.

Great kid and great player--unfortunately out on rehab following shoulder surgery and not available for a "three-peat".

Yes, Dane told me he hopes to compete in the Best of 757 next year so I think he will be a Best of 757 Hall-of-Famer.
