Best stadiums

Salem overall best, Giles best food/game atmosphere, Pulaski best pregame entrance

Glenvar will be much improved this year ..maybe make my list for next year

Giles has the worse stadium in the area, the field is horrible. I can't believe anyone would even compare it to a sandlot field! Much less college, really ? Come on there is no place to sit and see the game. Redford has an awesome stadium , playoffs should be there
How log has it been since u have been to a Giles game? The field is great and new bleachers on both sides. If u can't find a place to sit there then u never got out of your vehicle.

I went to the JV game at James Monroe last week. I'll add the stadium at Maury Field to my favorites. Beautiful old school behind to home side. Extremely well maintained Bermuda grass field. Quality modern restrooms and concession stand. Most don't like this, but I do, old concrete bleachers on the home side. The place reminded me of Merner Field in Hopewell.

The football players with their shiny gold helmets descend slowly down a lit staircase down a steep hill just prior to the National Anthem. Stadium has always been packed when I was there. Reminds me of the Gladiators.

Handley is far and away the most beautiful. Frankly nothing else comes close and I've seen almost all of them.

The next tier would be Pulaski, Salem, Radford, Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield and Darling Stadium in Hampton. Most of the stadiums east of the mountains are just bleachers on flat land. But in the western part of the state, a lot of the stadiums are built into the landscape and more appealing. Just my opinion.

The Handley Bowl is impressive to say the least ...

8/28 Sherando
10/9 Powhatan
10/16 Western Albemarle
10/23 Monticello
11/6 Charlottesville

Any of these could be really good, Sherando is probably the best one to see.

Sherando's Oct. 23rd will be the BEST game to watch as they play host to the 2 time defending state champ, Fort Hill Sentinels from Cumberland, MD. Fort Hill has approx 1,000 students. They have a legit RB going to Maryland.

I'm sure that will be a good one, my post was referring to the best potential games on Louisa's schedule, not Sherando's.

Good question. I'm not sure honestly. I would assume place like Bath County are at a much higher altitude. There are parts of BV that set higher than that field does though.

That would be the wrong assumption. Blue field VA is the highest elevated town in the state of Virginia. Mitchell Stadium ( Graham High and Bluefield High ) sets right on the state line barely in the state of West Virginia and the stadium is on a hill in addition to already being elevated nearly 3000 feet above sea level. I have been to nearly all of them in Va from Mitchell stadium is the best. It holds 10 to 12 thousand and once hosted VT and Marshall back in the 50s. Having been to Salem and Darling in Hampton and soany more around the state, Mitchell is the most impressive I have see. If Blue field were a bigger town than Salem- Roanoke, the Stagg Bowl would be there. As nice as Salem is, Mitchell is even nicer. Interestingly, in 1989, Graham High hosted a Southampton in the state title game. That state title game was played 100 feet outside of the state of Va and in the state of WV...as the stadium sets in West Virginia literally feet from the Va state line.

Love the state about the state title game and from the pics it looks like an absolutely awesome stadium. In that '89 season, did Graham play Bluefield? I know the G-Men started out with a whole bunch of shutouts but I've never found their scores for that season.

To be fair, I said Bath was just at a higher altitude...not the highest.

Westfield - Most professional people in the state whom I have met. From the media pass gate guy to the concession stand people, announcers, admins. Big crowds, frantic student body. First class all the way.

Colonial Forge - Might be the cleanest place in the entire state, everything there seems new and crisp

Oscar Smith - kids come out of a cage before the game, music blaring, burger smoke in the air, big crowds. It's a scene

Darling Stadium in Hampton - when it is packed for a rivalry game like Phoebus/Hampton in the early 00's, you had to be there three hours early and it was humming with electricity all night.

Handley - Beyond gorgeous, so much so that you get caught looking around instead of watching the game. Should be a DIII college.

Amherst County - great tailgate, surrounded by woods, enter at top of stadium, beautiful

Maury Field for James Monroe - unique and historic, crowd is right on top of the field

Riverheads - players took field to fireworks, crowd was less than 10 yards from the field making it very, very intimate (and rowdy)

There are some good stadiums around, but also there are some not much better than playing in a cow pasture.

Wow, the video of Handley was incredible.....what a gorgeous place to play. Thanks for sharing.

Salem is not the high schools stadium. Technically they don't have one.

Try telling Salem fans that !! It is a City stadium used for Salem games as well as other events and if you look at the Thread title, it does not say "high school stadiums" only best stadiums and where as this is a high school board I only used stadiums that I have watched high school games. by the way Radford is very nice as well just small
