It's
Week 4 and we are starting to get a feel for how our teams are shaping
up this year. That's not to say that there won't be a team that
heads in a direction that is unexpected but there have been some squads
that have gone on a path that I, along with many others, didn't
anticipate at the beginning of the year. As always, there are
some good matchups this week including one contest on Saturday that is
very intriguing. Let's take a look at some of the most attractive
matchups along with a glance at everything that is going on in the
Piedmont this week.
Games to Watch
Briar Woods (2-1) at North Stafford (3-0)
These
squads met each other twice in 2013 with the Wolverines ending Briar
Woods 32 game winning streak during the regular season. In the
rubber match, the Falcons held off North Stafford in the state
semifinals to earn their fourth consecutive trip to a state
championship game. Each team lost some key contributors to last
years' teams but the impact that North Stafford felt has been a bit
more significant.
Nonetheless, Head Coach Joe Mangano has
directed the youthful Wolverines to a 3-0 start with a pair of those
victories being earned in the waning moments of their contests.
Sophomore running back Malachai Harrison has played magnificent during the start of the season earning over 100 yards in each of the first three games.
The
Wolverines defense has also played well particularly during the final
stretches of the two tight contests in which the defensive backfield
came has come up with big interceptions to solidify the win in the
games' final quarter. The unit will have to be ready to put up
another solid outing against a Falcons team that has several weapons
including wide receiver Brandon Polk who will be heading to Penn State after his high school career is over.
Senior quarterback Jake Maffe
has done a good job so far stepping into the signal caller position for
Briar Woods and will be tested by the Wolverines defense. In the
newest VirginiaPreps.com rankings, North Stafford is sitting at the #9
position in Class 5A while the Falcons are just outside the Top Ten.
While there are several factors that play into the rankings, a
win here may put Briar Woods on that Top Ten list.
Falcons 27, Wolverines 19
Eastern View (3-0) at Handley (2-1)
In
2013, the Cyclones surprised everyone by the way they handily defeated
the Judges to the tune of 63-28. At that point in time, both
squads were undefeated but many questioned the toughness of Eastern
View. The victory silenced some critics but despite having their
best season in school history last year, there are still doubters when
it comes to the Cyclones ability to defeat the best of the best.
I,
for one, buried any questions I had about this team long ago. Not
only did the Cyclones earn their best record ever last year, the team
has started off 3-0 in 2014 and are annihilating their opponents.
Senior running back Kendrick Kube almost run at will against each of his teams' first three opponents of the season and with quarterback Josh Stallings at the helm, the Eastern View offense has a balance that makes them tough to defend.
While
the Judges didn't exactly get off to a running start this year with a
shutout loss to Liberty-Bealeton to start the season, the team has
bounced back well with convincing wins during the last two weeks.
Handley boasts an offense with talents such quarterback Will Dearing, running back D.J. Frisby, and receiver Justin Washington
among others. Washington is a tall, fast receiver with dynamic
talents but missed the beginning of the year for Handley with an injury.
This
game has all the makings for a classic offensive shootout but I would
be if either team runs away with it like their previous meeting.
In addition, a Saturday game in the Handley Bowl is always
beautiful. That combination should provide for a dandy of a game
for the all the spectators that are on hand in Winchester.
Cyclones 39, Judges 35
Sherando (2-1) at Kettle Run (1-1)
Both
of these teams enter Friday's matchup coming off of big victories and
this game will pit a pair of powerhouses with a formidable test.
The Warriors will play their first game against a Virginia
opponent after beginning the year with their typical string against
West Virginia squads. After suffering a loss against Martinsburg
in week 2, the 2013 Class 4A state runner-ups produced 60 points last
week in a game that saw the offense score five touchdowns on its' first
five possessions to start the game.
Running back LeeQuan Washington and wide receiver Josh Ojo
provided a few of the sparks for Sherando on offense and will be asked
to produce against a Kettle Run defense that is typically a strong
unit. The Cougars defense is led by East Carolina commit Abu Kai-Kai and will have to tighten up in this game after surrendering 62 points during the squads' first two contests.
Offensively, Kettle Run has several playmakers including Virginia commit David Eldridge, Denzell Champion, and Austin Lewis
to name a few. While any of those three players have the ability
to score at anytime, it's not likely that Kettle Run will be able to
dominate the Warriors defense which is why the Sherando offense will
have to be contained.
It's still early and these teams are
putting together squads that are likely going to be contenders into the
postseason but their identities have not fully formed at this point.
One thing that will be an advantage to some extent for Kettle Run
is that they will be playing in front of their home crowd and not at
Arrowhead Stadium. While the contest will be decided on the
field, both of these schools have strong fan bases that can bring a
benefit to the team with the 12th man advantage.
Warriors 21, Cougars 14
Other Games on the Docket
Albemarle (0-2) at Patrick Henry-Roanoke (2-1)
This
game pits two Patriots squads against each other which is always fun
for announcers and the media to cover. Albemarle has not started
off the season as well as they would have liked with two difficult
losses and now must face a strong group in Patrick Henry on the road.
If the team is to get things turned around they will have to be
ready for a serious battle when they travel to Roanoke.
Patrick Henry 29, Albemarle 17
William Monroe (1-1) at Charlottesville (1-1)
Early
on, both of these teams have showed a lot of grit. The Dragons
won their season opener and then just missed the opportunity to begin
the year 0-2 when they narrowly fell to Broadway last week. The
Black Knights rebounded nicely in week 2 after a loss to start the
season and this matchup in Charlottesville should be a good one with
both teams displaying positive signs on both sides of the ball.
Black Knights 24, Dragons 21
King George (1-2) at Louisa County (1-1)
The
Foxes began the season with a difficult loss, won their next game, and
then were wiped out last week against Riverbend. Louisa County
also last week but after a rough start bounced back against a strong
Courtland squad. I don't think this is a "give me" game by any
stretch of the imagination but with the Lions back in the jungle I
expect that the team will find a way to earn another victory.
Lions 17, Foxes 14
Clarke County (2-0) at Brentsville (2-1)
The
Tigers have had a strong start to the 2014 season ending a 39 game
losing streak in the opener and then following that up with another win
before falling for the first time last week. Clarke County has
compiled two wins by a combined total of 96-14 and with Brentsville
start this season you can bet that Head Coach Chris Parker won't let
his team take their opponent lightly this week.
Eagles 31, Tigers 16
Courtland (2-1) at Stafford (1-2)
In
the last two games the Cougars have gotten on track after a tough loss
to begin the year. Stafford earned their first win of the year
last week but the Indians have showed well in each of their outings
this week. One thing that is concerning is that the Stafford
defense allowed Albemarle to run the ball effectively last week and
Courtland brings an offense with what may be the best trio of running
backs in the state. It's possible that this game isn't decided
until late.
Cougars 27, Indians 21
Brooke Point (0-3) at Chancellor (0-3)
Someone
will earn their first win of the year in this contest. The Black
Hawks have been inching closer to the taste of victory under new Head
Coach Tommy Buzzo and nearly knocked off North Stafford last week.
Chancellor has at times shown that they can be a team that can
produce but they have not had much consistency to this point.
Will this be the week that they find continuity or does Buzzo get
his first win at his new school?
Black Hawks 22, Chargers 20
Central-Woodstock (1-1) at Spotswood (0-3)
Last
year, the Trailblazers defeated the Falcons by a mere point after
Central opted to go for two in overtime but failed to convert.
This year, both teams have not resembled the characteristics of
who they were a year ago. The Falcons lost their season opener
but bounced back with a win before taking last week off. The
Trailblazers have yet to win a game and have suffered some difficult
losses thus far. Anything could happen but I think Central is the
pick this time around.
Falcons 24, Trailblazers 14
Colonial Forge (1-2) at Massaponax (3-0)
While
this contest has potential to be a game to watch, it has a bit of the
appeal it had prior to the season mostly because of the difficult start
that the Eagles have had this year. Forge has played strong in
each of the the three games it has played but the team has put itself
in difficult situations that they couldn't rebound from in each of its
losses. On the other side, Massaponax has steam rolled its
opponents with little resistance heading into this game. I think
there is a chance that Colonial Forge could surprise some people by
earning a win this week but I'm going to stay on the safe side.
Panthers 34, Eagles 30
Fluvanna County (1-1) at Culpeper County (1-2)
The
Flucos were defeated mightily in week one but bounced back with a full
out assault against Spotswood. The Blue Devils suffered a pair of
losses before putting together a victory last week against Madison
County. Last years' contest between these two teams was only
decided by five points and there's no reason to believe either squad a
distinct advantage heading into Friday night. Another toss-up,
I'll take the home field advantage.
Blue Devils 24, Flying Flucos 22
Millbrook (2-1) at Fauquier (1-2)
The
Falcons escaped with a victory two weeks ago and then barely managed a
single score last week when the team traveled to Handley.
Millbrook started off the year with a surprising 2-0 start and
then took a loss to Kettle Run last week. The Pioneers appear to
have an edge in this game based simply on what each squad has shown
thus far but the Falcons always play better at home.
Falcons 21, Pioneers 17
George Mason (1-1) at Luray (2-0)
Both
of these teams have began 2014 much as they did last season. The
glaring difference is tha George Mason's loss to Wakefield last week
was horrific for the Mustangs players. Last season in this
matchup, the Mustangs blanked the Bulldogs and I have to think that
Mason has something to prove following last weeks' performance. I
don't think this will be a shutout but I don't expect anything
different in terms of the outcome.
Mustangs 23, Bulldogs 18
Petersburg (1-1) at James Monroe (2-1)
The
more time that the Yellow Jackets get on the field together in live
game action, the more they appear to be the team that we thought they
could be. Each week, Head Coach Rich Serbay has a led a group
that has come together whether it be the emphasis on defense or in the
running game. Petersburg has done nothing wrong but hasn't shown
any signs of being able to handle a squad of Monroe's calibur just yet.
Yellow Jackets 34, Crimson Waves 10
Liberty-Bealeton (2-0) at Mountain View (1-2)
There's
no other word to describe the Eagles in their first two games other
than dominant. Liberty-Bealeton has won the contests by a
combined total of 90-0. The Wildcats, on the other hand, have
struggled thus far and not lived up to early season expectations.
Granted the two losses came at the hands of Varina and James
Monroe who aren't slouches by any stretch but this game won't be any
easier. I don't expect another Eagles shutout here but it's not
out of the realm of possibility.
Eagles 27, Wildcats 13
East Rockingham (2-0) at Madison County (0-2)
The
Eagles are off to a 2-0 start and are looking to have another solid
year in the programs youthful existence. The Mountaineers are off
to a slow start but the group was in a similar situation as last season
but they managed to knock off East Rock at the same point in the
season. That type of history makes you wary when making a
selection but the Eagles are the favorite so I'll stick with that.
Eagles 21, Mountaineers 19
Manassas Park (1-1) at Skyline (2-1)
Another
potential game that could be determined late will be played in Front
Royal on Friday night. The Cougars showed a bit of offensive life
in their last game and that has been the achilles heal for the team for
some time. Skyline looked better last week earning a victory
after a tough loss to Skyline. I think the Cougars can win this
game but something tells me the Hawks and Head Coach Heath Gilbert find
a way to win this one.
Hawks 19, Cougars 16
Turner Ashby (1-1) at Monticello (2-0)
The
Black Knights earned their first win last week against Rockingham
County at home while Monticello remained perfect with a solid win over
Fork Union. The Mustangs did suffer a few injuries that might
hurt if they have a lasting effect but things don't appear that way at
this point. These two teams have met in each of the last three
years with the closest margin of victory being determined by 31 points.
Monticello won all three of those contests and I expect the same
this week. Will it be by 31 or more? That is yet to be seen.
Mustangs 42, Black Knights 13
Riverbend (2-1) at Orange County (0-2)
The
Hornets have allowed 55 and 48 points, repectively, in their first two
outings this fall. In their two victories, Riverbend has scored
48 and 46 points. That combination doesn't bode well for Orange
County this week especially with the Bears operating with the spread
attack this year and showing an ability to run and pass the ball
effectively on offense. This could be another long night at
Porterfield Park.
Bears 44, Hornets 12
Powhatan (1-1) at Greensville County (1-1)
Although
these two squads have met annually for at least the last 15 seasons,
you have to go all the way back to the year 2000 to find a game that
the Indians came out on the losing end of things. Even in the
loss last week, Powhatan showed its' dynamic offensive abilities which
makes me think that the Eagles will have to wait another year to notch
a win in the series because I don't think their defense will be able to
contain for 48 minutes.
Indians 33, Eagles 6
The Leftovers
Appomattox County (1-2) at R.E. Lee-Staunton (0-2)
Raiders 28, Fighting Leemen 20
Grace Christian (0-0) at Rappahannock County (0-3)
Panthers 14, Warriors 8
Southampton (0-2) at Spotsylvania (0-2)
Knights 17, Indians 14
James Wood (1-2) at Strasburg (1-1)
Rams 28, Colonels 14
Stuarts Draft (1-1) at Broadway (1-1)
Cougars 28, Gobblers 21
