Boneheaded Coaching by Wilson

You never take points off the board. Kicked a field goal for the lead late in the game. Glenvar was offsides penalty was not enough for a first down. Coach took points off the board and went for it and Wilson was stopped. Wilson's d forced overtime. Then they lost. Wilson's coach cost his boy's a state title. Terrible choice to take points off the board

I agree ! Your kicker just made one let him kick it again ! Nice move bonehead ! LMAO

Yes, but the play was called dead before the kick and it didn't count even though it went through the uprights. That meant Wilson had a choice to either re-kick or go for it with 4th and less than 1. I would say the odds on either are about the same so I don't blame the coach for that one. If they had gotten that first down they more than likely burn off the clock and kick the field goal for the win. Hindsight is always 20/20.

I just knew that if Glenvar was to win this one, it would come down to coaching. Either Glenvar's coach would come up with something brilliant, or Wilson's coach would plunge his appendage in the mashed potatoes. Sadly, it was the latter this time. I feel bad for McBee. This is the second time his coach screwed him and cost the team the game.

The Glenvar coaching was great and has been all year...but I thought Wilson was coached just as well today. Game could have gone either way. If Glenvar had lost I am sure there would be second guessing the last 3 plays of the game in regulation and not using the timeouts to get closer.....fortunately for us everything came out roses. Wilson has a great team and left it all on the field. nothing wrong with what I saw with the coaching moves. Players still have to make plays. That last play in OT and the penalty is what cost Wilson the game...not the coaches...

I listened to the game on the radio and I was saying: DON'T GO FOR IT, RE-KICK THE BALL... I was saying that for a couple reasons: the wind was with you (and it was apparently strong in Salem), your kicker just made it from 5 yards deeper, and the ball was ~10 yard line late in the game. If I had gone for it, I honestly would have felt the most comfortable with a QB sneak.

But hey, it was probably a tough call for the coach and if they had gotten the 1st down, they could have run the clock down some more an possibly gotten a TD and then we'd likely be praising Wilson's decision to go for it. And being that I didn't actually see the kick, maybe it barely made it over the goal post and the coach didn't feel comfortable re-kicking.

I just don't see how you go for it there when you have one of the most conservative game plans/offenses up to that point... You decide to get aggressive with your play calling at that point in the game, which is surprising to me... but I guess that's why they don't pay me the big bucks to coach!

The kick in question was a good kick, if not right down the middle then pretty close. It was also obviously kicked after the whistle had blown. And yes, the wind was quite strong (which also led to a lot of cold people who hadn't come prepared for that whole scene).

Wow,
Sure are a lot of coaches on this thread. You are so smart. They lose a state championship in overtime. Doubt any of you guys ever called a play in your life much less led a team of 14-18 yr olds. But hey if it makes you feel good, question a coach who has done nothing but win and turned a program around. You guys are so smart, if only we had all the answers like you. Check the coaching openings on another thread, I am sure your resume is fantastic

Why would we do that when it is much easier to coach on here-- after the game has taken place lol...

I had posted in another thread that Coach Major is helping these guys be more than just football players, he is trying to teach them how to be good men, husbands, and fathers some day, and trust me, kids nowadays need a figure/role model like that. The life skills being taught to those young men will matter much more in the long run that this game that took place (even though the state championship is a big deal). When they look back on it 20 years from now, they will be proud to have made it that far (but still wishing they had won it). Lots of respect to Coach Major from this guy, for sure.

Also, Coach MacDaniel helped build the foundation to the program that is Wilson today, hopefully he can do the same to Waynesboro, and it appears as though he is on the right track. I think Major is part of the MacDaniel coaching tree as I'm pretty sure he was on his staff a before going to the 'boro.

If Glenvar was offsides then the points were never on the board. The play was dead at that point. The decision was to re-kick 5 yards closer or go for it. I personally would have re-kicked that close.

I normally just read these forums but as a parent of a Wilson Jr. and a youth coach I will say that coaches get more credit than they deserve when they win, and all the blame when they lose. Not a lot of fun sometimes being a coach nowadays.

Coach Major was the Offensive Coordinator during Coach Mac's tenure at Wilson and was on the staff prior to as well. At times, we all have questioned calls or things that go on during the game, but you do those in private, not in a public forum. Coach Major in no way lost the game. It is unfair to him and his staff to imply that. He went with his gut, and it didn't work out. His gut at times has been right. Where are the articles and criticism when things worked out for him? Make one more play at another point in the game, and you are not in this position. One play, one call, one second of a game does not determine the outcome. We as a team needed to play better. We as a team needed to be healthy. We as a team needed a few breaks which we didn't get. We lost the Championship game in OT, not the end of the world and nothing to be ashamed of.

Those that feel the need to publicly bash Coach Major need to take a close look in the mirror about yourselves. My son who will be playing on the terrible Wilson team next year will be a much better man just by being mentored and coached by Major and many of his staff. The things not only on the field but off the field that he brings to Wilson are things that you do not find in many programs. His off the field standards are high, his expectations on and off the field are high, and my son is one of the men that have been blessed to be a part of it.

Keith and Wake, I'm glad you spoke out.

To bash any coach for the football decisions he makes is pretty low. To berate a coach that gets you to a state championship game is classless, or worse.

Reserve such harshness for a coach that sets a lousy example for his kids. You know, like supposed fans posting criticism on a public forum.

From the Glenvar side it looked like the kick was a low line drive, not a kick that would make me very confident if I were the coach. On the other hand Wilson's qb and swift and McCauley had been getting those 4th and ones all during the 2nd half. Logically I can see a coach going for the first down. I think the odds are better that he gets the first down, runs down the clock, and then either kicks a shorter field goal or scores a touchdown to win the game.

Don't forget that after Glenvar got the ball on the 20 they easily went down the field and had 55 seconds left on the Wilson 20. Glenvar elected to run the ball up the middle three straight times to burn off the clock even though they had 3 timeouts. If they were behind the play calling would have been different so to say The coach was at fault.

Another false statement on here is that the coach took 3 off the board. There never was a 3 to take off the board. Play was blown dead before the kick. .

A couple things, the kick didn't count because of the encroachment call. WHSV highlights will show the refs under the goal post blowing the play dead as the ball was in the air. Second which no one has noticed (and I am not hanging a loss on this play) Wilson did get the first down on the 4th and 2. Wilson had been running the power and it was working. Wilson's offense is designed to get three yards a pop, if we break one so be it, but it is just ground and pound. Again, if you watch the 4th down highlight take a look where swift is and then take a look at where it was marked. It sure looks like it is about 2 yards back from where he is laying with the ball.

Was that play the sole reason for the loss, heck no. While folks talk about how bad Wilson will be next year, I disagree. Will they go 4-6 not likely. Even with that record they would probably make the playoffs. These upcoming players keep hearing from everybody as to how bad they are going to be and they will never get back to a title game.

They are getting offended and started working out on Sunday to get back there. This team next year will play with a chip on their shoulder because only a few have faith in them. So keep the posts coming about Wilson, it makes for good bulletin board material.
