Looks like Lee is focusing in on what coach Mickens 'preached to his players since Saturday's loss' (News Leader article). 'They have to depend on each other to make it work'. If Lee can continue to improve on defense and rebounding, then I will really start to believe in their odds to repeat.

They are deep, athletic, and have the length and size to have a very effective man and pressure defense. Turning teams over for easy buckets is big in games against good competition. Their offense is balanced led by Vaughan at almost 18 points per game..

Little Giants scored final six points of the quarter to try and make it a game.

Good road win against rival Waynesboro. Lee improves to 9-1. Waynesboro falls to 8-6 overall, but still in 2nd place in the Valley District behind Spotswood.

Hopefully Lee is starting to jell now after 10 games (after the late start due to football season).

Do you know if they are playing the bench more and more as the season wears on?

I think it's going to be important down the road - and the defense like you mentioned earlier.

Mickens has been using his bench a lot. He was quoted as saying he thinks all of his players can play and contribute. Vaughan gets the most minutes, as long as foul trouble is not a issue. Williams gets his too. After that, Mickens has been using several players. Castle, Henderson, Pettiford, Napier, Velvin, Elliston, Simmons, Vest, Kelly, Z.Browm, and Simms.

Scoring wise, Williams and Castle will get Lee 7-10 points on average. Any of the others can give you 5 or more any given game. Good balance in that regard. They have not been dependent on Vaughan to carry the load.

Quick start ignites Lee past Waynesboro boys, 66-48

WAYNESBORO — Robert E. Lee and Waynesboro may not be Valley District boys’ basketball combatants anymore, but the rivalry remains just as intense.

The Leemen and Little Giants squared off as nondistrict foes for the first time in decades Thursday night, and Lee used a strong start and big fourth quarter from Everrette Castle for a 66-48 victory.

Lee (9-1) scored the game’s first 12 points and never trailed throughout, but the Little Giants chopped the margin to 12 after three quarters to place concern in the Leemen.

However, Castle, known for his first-quarter scoring, waited until the fourth because of foul trouble to make his mark. The senior tallied 10 points in the final eight minutes and dished out an assist as the Leemen kept Waynesboro at bay.

“I was well-rested after spending most of the game on the bench with fouls,” Castle said. “I just wanted to go out there and hustle, and try to help the team. I got to the right spots and my teammates helped me out by getting the ball to me.”

The Leemen led 46-28 late in the third quarter before Waynesboro (8-6) scored the final six point, capped by a 3-pointer from De’Tajh Smith that left the Giants trailing 46-34.

But Castle started the final quarter with a layup and Jarvis Vaughan worked inside for a bucket as the lead grew to 50-34.

Castle got loose underneath for back-to-back scores to get Lee out of harm’s way at 54-36.

Lee’s inside game saved it as the perimeter scoring was AWOL. The Leemen hit only one 3-pointer and had only a handful of baskets outside 12 feet.

The Leemen also lived at the foul line, especially Vaughan, as the game turned into a foulfest from the start. Lee was 25-of-37 at the line, including Vaughan’s 12-of-19 effort.

“Nothing was dropping outside all night, so we kept stressing the inside game,” Lee acting head coach Terrell Mickens said. “We talked about getting control early. Anytime Lee plays at Waynesboro it turns into a dogfight.”

And establishing that early dominance is exactly what Lee did. Jahleel Pettiford started the Leemen’s game-opening 12-0 spurt with a three-point play off a steal and capped it with a layup off a Vaughan assist.

“The early lead helped us get comfortable and establish our game,” said Castle, who had a basket and two free throws during the early assault.

Waynesboro didn’t score for nearly four minutes before a seven surge cut the deficit to 12-7. Lee managed to take a 17-8 advantage after one period.

The Giants followed the same scoreless pattern to begin the second quarter, this one lasting three minutes as the Leemen scored seven unanswered points for a 24-8 margin.

Lee lived at the line in the period with 10 of its 19 second-quarter points coming from the stripe as the Leemen had doubled the score, 36-18, at the break. DaJuan Moore kept the Giants from being completely blown out in the second period, scoring eight of his team’s 10 points, including a pair of three-point plays.

Vaughan finished with 18 points to spark the Leemen, while Castle added 14.

Smith paced the Giants with 15. Moore contributed 14 and Dequiondre Clark 10.

The Leemen are right back on the court Friday at winless Buffalo Gap.

Lee’s jayvees continued its dominating unbeaten season with an 81-39 rout of the Giants. Ethan Painter sparked the Leemen with 16 points, while Carmelo Pacheco-Whitelow added 12 and Markqwan Miller 11. MyKal Gardner led the Giants with 10 and Samir Moore eight.
