Amherst 58, Martinsville 56
In a tight game Monday, Amherst’s defense and ability to shoot free throws paid off with a win.
The Lancers went 3 for 4 from the line to pick up and extend the lead down the stretch, and steals on consecutive Martinsville possessions sealed the victory.
After Martinsville’s EJ Bratcher picked up a steal and found Aidan Self for a layup that gave the Bulldogs a 56-55 lead, Amherst’s Gardner Blanks was fouled driving into the lane. Blanks calmly stepped up to the line and knocked down both of his shots to put the Lancers ahead by a point.
With the game winding down, Martinsville attempted a Hail-Mary pass, but the Lancers’ Thaikwon Ward broke up the pass and picked up a steal, leading to a Raquan Spradley runout, which resulted in a foul.
Spradley knocked down one of his two attempts from the charity stripe, putting the Lancers ahead 58-56 with 47 seconds remaining.
Amherst’s defense stood strong again on the ensuing inbounds pass, with Ward picking off the pass to seal the win.
Amherst had three players finish in double figures in scoring. Leon Carter led the Lancers with 18 points, while Ke’Shawn Price and Ward finished with 12 each. Price notched a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Bratcher also picked up a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds for Martinsville while TJ Pettway chipped in 16.
