ELKTON - East Rockingham rolled passed Stuarts Draft 83-52 in Shenandoah District boys basketball action Friday night.
The Eagles, playing just their second game due to the football playoffs, wasted no time taking control of the contest from the start. Freshman forward Tyler Nickel scored 12 points in the first period and East Rock used a 12-2 run late in the quarter to take a 20-6 after one.
The Eagles opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run, including a pair of dunks by Dalton Jefferson, and breezed to a 44-22 halftime margin. Jared Rosen had a pair of 3s and led the Cougars with eight in the first half. Aaron Nice had the only other trey for the Cougars before the break.
A 14-2 run to open the third period by the Eagles put the game pretty much out of reach. Draft did get three treys in the third, including two by Jo'-el Howard, and another by Rosen as the Cougars scored 19 points, but trailed 62-41 heading into the final period.
Nickel, a 6-foot-6 forward who transferred from Eastern Mennonite High School, led the Eagles with a game-high 28 points. Rosen paced the Cougars with 19, including five 3-pointers and Howard added 15. Draft hit eight 3-point goals in the contest with five coming after the break.
"It was an excellent team and it was a good learning experience for us tonight," Draft coach Mike Gale said. "Hopefully we grew up a little. Our rebounding was not very good and it was not a very good game overall and [East Rock] had a lot to do with that. We can learn from this, get better and move onto next week. I saw some fight in some of our guys that played until the final buzzer. I hope that they can be an example for all of our players."
Draft saw its five-game win streak come to an end and fell to 5-2 overall. The Cougars will travel to Stonewall Jackson on Wednesday. East Rock moved to 2-0 and returns home Saturday to host Riverheads.
In the junior varsity contest, Draft pulled out a thrilling 68-65 win. Chase Altis led the Cougars with 16 and Ethan Cash added 15.
