FCA CLASSIC: Vikings go extra for win

BLUFF CITY, Tenn. – Those who plunked down five bucks to witness Saturday night’s FCA Hoops Classic certainly got their money’s worth.

All four boys basketball teams involved left the Dyer Dome spent after Tennessee High defeated Union 69-67 in three overtimes and host Sullivan East took out Eastside by a 65-63 count in one extra period.

Union head coach Zack Moore may have summed it up best.

“Win or lose that game, it’s good for us,” Moore said. “That’s the kind of game and the good competition that we need at this early stage of the season.”

Moore’s team saw its record evened at 1-1 after Tennessee High (5-5) fought and scratched and clawed its way over the proverbial hump when Cade Mitchell took his defender off the dribble to score on a driving layup with 2.2 seconds left in the third OT.

Throughout the extra sessions it was 6-foot-5 James Mitchell who had been blanketing the Vikings’ 5-9 guard. However, with four fouls on Union’s superman, Moore opted for another defender on the final play.

“I don’t know why they switched but I was glad they did,” said THS veteran coach Roby Witcher. “Cade was able to get [his defender] off his feet and obviously it was a big play for us.

“We had several chances to win it with free throws and what not, but to dig in right there – I don’t even know how many overtimes it was, three? – that was a big thing for us. And I like it.”

With Union junior Wes Slagle pouring in 25 points to lead all scorers and sharpshooting teammate Austin Gibson nailing six 3s to contribute 18 points, Tennessee High trailed much of the night.

But the Vikings were able to draw even by the end of regulation because of terrific defensive pressure out front by Witcher’s three-headed guard tandem of Mitchell, Brandon Brown and Cole McBrayer.

THS forced 21 turnovers on the evening.

“Christian [Webb] did a really good job … I thought Red [Nolan Wishon] did … Blake Fauver coming off the bench right there made a couple big buckets and got some big rebounds … my backup guards were great,” Witcher said. “It was just an all-around team effort and I’m really pleased.

“Everyone on the floor was gassed and in the end it was kind of a battle of wills.”

Webb and Mitchell both scored 17 points to pace the Vikings, while McBrayer added 10.

James Mitchell scored 10 for the Bears, some four hours after catching four passes and scoring a touchdown in Saturday’s VHSCA all-star football game at UVa-Wise.

Look at the foul numbers in a 3OT game in which one team ran full court press the majority of the game, it's almost mathematically impossible to have so few fouls. The officials seemed determined to make sure both Eastside and Union lost.

That's what I heard. I told the guy who runs Eastside Twitter account to be expecting that kind of treatment next week in the Arby's as well. Wished I could have gone to that Eastside and Union game tonight. Should be a hell of a game.
