Buckingham leads Henrico to Win (VaPreps Classic)

De'Monte Buckingham took over in the 4th quarter to help Henrico to a thrilling 66-64 win over the Norview Pilots. He finished with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 6 steals, and 5 assists. Walter Williams added 18 points and Ryan Pearson chipped in 14 points for the Warriors who improved to 11-1 with the win.

Buckingham, a D1 with recruit with an offer from Virginia, had only five points at the break as Henrico trailed by 14 points 38-24. The Warriors opened the 3rd quarter with a 6-0 run but still trailed Norview 55-42 with 1:42 to go in the third quarter. Jamal Newton opened the 4th quarter with a corner three and a steal by Tristan Bazemore led to a layup by Buckingham and suddenly Henrico was down by only four.

From that point on, Buckingham simply took over. He drew a charge, then scored a layup while getting fouled with 4:19 to go. He converted the And one to give Henrico their first lead (59-58) since the 1st quarter. After getting his shot rejected, Buckingham hustled down to block a shot on the defensive end. He drove down the lane for a layup to out Henrico back out in front 62-60. After a miss by Norview, Buckingham finished a fast break with a dish to Newton for an easy layup. He ended his dominant play with a steal late in the game.

Norview was held to seven points in the final period while turning the ball over 13 times in the second half. They were led in scoring by Jaylen Frazier who finished with 15 points. Both Lamont Steward and Greg Heckstall contributed 13 points. Heckstall was 3 of 5 from downtown.
