Stuarts Draft VA
Sad sad night at Buffalo Gap tonight for the Cougars. 2 fumbles inside the 5, and 3 total for the game, and to lose what was on the clock with 9.3 seconds left. Now I think that everyone that has seen me post over the years on here would say that I know my football, I am not an expert, but I have been around the game a long time with playing coaching, and watching. And yes I still believe what I said earlier in the season when I got into a discussion (thats how I will put it :) with the posters from Giles when they were complaining about the officials. I have also said the same thing in past years. The officials didn't cost SD the game let me say that first. But on 3rd and goal from the 1 for BG at the end of the game, I saw one of the poorest calls I have witnessed. I will say I am 100% sure on this, and I would never say 100%. SD stopped the BG defender short of the TD, it was clear to everyone on SD side, probably some or most on the BG side as well. He went down with around 25 seconds left in the game, the officials came in and watched the pile. They stopped the clock and signaled TD with 3.4 seconds left. So they let the pile go for 22 seconds. After the "score" they reset the clock to 9.3 seconds.

Again, the refs or that call didn't cost SD the game, but that is a very sad way for the game to end. If I were those officials, even though I know bad calls happen I would have a hard time sleeping tonight. SD dominated the game, and SD was the team that deserved to win the game. I am not being a homer there, because earlier this season when Wilson beat SD, even though I thought SD was the better team, I said Wilson deserved to win that game. It was terrible seeing how heartbroken all the kids were after the game, especially the seniors. Great group of kids, and I love them all.

I realized I forgot to add what an incredibly great game this was and congratulations to Buffalo Gap and good luck to everyone the rest of the season

Realize now that I don't think I made my main point extremely clear. While I disagreed with that TD call, and I will go to my grave believing I am right on that, and I heard on video from side of endzone you can see the kid didn't get in, but I can see how that is a hard call to make. My point is you can't take that much time in a pile and make that call. I have been in many a pile, which I am sure most of us on here have, and so many things happen.

I think the part that got me the most on it, and I sure do wish I had taken a video because I was right on the line, but who would think of that at the time, is that the line judge on SD side marked him short right after the play was over. One of the better football games I have seen in a long time, and it is a shame someone had to lose. Good season by the Cougars and I hope this will add a little more fuel for next season. They should have a good season next season, as 3 out of 4 in backfield (QB, 1 wing, and TB) all come back

A few weeks into basketball season and you will have forgotten this game ! Best of luck to the Cougars . Some real talent on this team ! The coaches ?????????????

Come on with the ?????? of the coaches. I for one was sure they would struggle with Bowers going to Gap as an assistant last year. But I will say here I was wrong as they have done pretty well. We will see if they can build on this year and come out fired up next year.

He was responding to X Cross' posting above, not one of yours. Tough break for the Cougars. Sounds like it was a heck of a game, but with Johnson and Jones both back next year, the Draft could have the last laugh.

Jones was a senior, Johnson and Lehman will be back, along with Campbell.

Yes tough one to swallow. I don't think that the "call" cost them the game, but it was a HUGE call, and one that in all my years around football can't be made like that. I would not have had nearly the problem I had with it if it were called right away, but to wait that long I have a serious problem with, especially when the LJ had him short to begin with. I remember talking to some officials in the near past, and they said on things like that you should err on the side of caution and not make a game changing call, you need to be 100% sure.

I used to get on here and read some stuff because I love watching the Bison. Our internet is a bit slow out here in the sticks but I just figured how to use this chat thing. It is hard for me to get to a lot of games due to the amount of work this time of year on the farm but I enjoyed this game so much I had to comment...Guns...feller you seem to know a good bit about football...I can appreciate your loyalty and your knowledge of the game...however don't cheapen a great game played by both teams by bringing refs into the equation. Great Game...Great Fans...Great Coaching...what high school ball should look like...leave it at that.

Gunz:

At lunch today, I struck up a conversation with a Gap sweatshirt, or to be more exact, the person wearing it! He said that yes, the guy definitely got into the end zone, but of course he would say that I guess!

Not to keep this going but, I believe the point was that the line judge had come in to spot the ball short. Or at least that is what I am reading in Gunz remarks above. If you let a scrum go on for 20 seconds, who knows how much movement happens. Spotting the ball in general is problematic in high school but they need to be consistent. Either that or we force schools to go to goal line cams and replays, lol. Sorry for making light of this but it does sound like Draft had several chances to put the ball in the end zone and didn't. Those turnovers cost them in the end. Two times inside the 10 and no points to show, that is what lost the game, not the goal line stand that wasn't.

That is exactly was I saying, I never once said that the refs cost SD the game. I said the problem I had was being marked short on our side (I don't know about the other side, he obviously didn't signal TD at that point) and then the ensuing 30 secs it took to make a call, thats what I had a problem with, and thats the only problem I had with the officials. Longtime, I don't know where the guy you can talk to was, but I can say that with 1000% certainty, that I had the best view possible on the SD side, I was right at the goalline.

I will take it a step further, I am surely not always right, I have been wrong before and will be wrong many times in my lifetime, but I believe that it was short when the play was over and over when they called touchdown. Again I never once said the refs cost SD the game, but there is a problem when they wait 30 seconds to make a call

Well...lets agree to make 3 points and put this baby to rest.
1. Gunz41 your 1000% right he was not in
2. I am sure the person wearing the Gap Sweatshirt that said "no doubt he was in" is 1000% right!!
3. 20 years from now when these kids from both sides who played their hearts out for 48 minutes (for whom you have cheapened the game with your Ref rhetoric) share this story with their kids they will have different stories too...and each will be their kids hero...ain't that great!!!
I am going to make it a point to get to more games.

I smell stew!!! Muck boots off...overalls hung...time for supper!!!
this internet stuff out here where the high grass grows is pretty neat!!!

I am completely not understanding you when you say I cheapened the game with my ref rhetoric when I said MULTIPLE times that the refs didn't cost SD the game. When you have 2 fumbles inside 5 in a game like that you aren't going to win. What I said is that when LJ marks him short and then it takes 30 seconds to make a call when who knows what went on under the pile, you simply cannot make that call. If it were called a TD right away then that is a different story. BG also would have had another chance on 4th down and very well may have gotten in with NO QUESTION on that play, or kicked a FG. Again that is not taking anything away from BG or the refs, I just don't see how you can make that type of call. Lets put it in another context for you, so maybe you can see my point. If there is a play in the game, whether it was 1st play or last play, if there is a flag thrown for holding or block in the back or whatever, and it is thrown 30 seconds after the play, doesn't that warrant some type of questioning?

Well First I have to apologize to all of you...my little computer helper that helped me set up this chat thing spelled hay bales hay bails...funny kid. So she set me up a new one here. She said something about a spell checker deal on these computers must have changed it. My goodness guess these ole computers don't know how to spell bales as opposed to bails. Laugh Laugh. Anyway I wanted to check this thing one more time before I kick off to bed...Guns or Gunz (guess that spell checker deal got you too) I went back through the earlier game report to make sure I am not missing this thing. Did not mean to get your back hide all ruffled up but I don't get to see many games and I thought with the passion and grit both sides played with Friday night you did not capture that at all during your report. Heck you only gave the game two lines. The rest dedicated to your Ref deal and a couple points about fumbles. No real mention of how the kids fought their hind ends off. Anyway I appreciate your passion and discussion... your report on the game came up a "bit short." Dog gone... that is what got this thing started.

I guess you didn't read that part? O well, things happen. Anyway, if you did or didn't see the game, wouldn't you say those fumbles were a big part of the game? And how much of the game can you summarize with a 7-0 score when the team that scored, scored with 9.3 seconds left. it was obviously a great defensive ball game. Should I have said it was a battle back and forth with lots of defense? Should I have said how many punts there were? I am awfully sorry that I am not a good enough game summarizer, I am not longtimerhsfan

From where I was standing, which was the goal line, I thought he was stopped. It was very close but in this big of a game, if you are not a 100% sure, you do not make a game changing call. Gap I believe would have had another chance, or the game could have went to OT. Either way it was a hard fought game by both sides. Pulling for Gap and Lee to do well the next couple of weeks.

Which side were you on? I was obviously on SD side, and I was wondering if right when the play was stopped if LJ on the other side signaled short as well?

I was on Drafts side. Probably standing beside you lol. I know kids from both teams so really had no dog in the fight other than Draft may be a bigger rival. I never noticed the other LJ, I was watching the scrum and clock thinking they are letting the time run out? I just think it was close, and that big of a situation you put time on the clock and keep playing. Gap probably would have scored after that, but you have to make sure of a call if it ends a teams season. Very strange ending and I know it had to be heartbreaking to lose like that.

WilsonFootball, no love for the Red Team in the next couple of weeks?

Lunch time!!! Still some stew left over from last night...speaking of stew...Guns (Gunz) hope your not still stewing! As that xcross fella said "horse is dead" your point made but not well taken by some who thought the game was more than your ref assessment...anyway you asked way to many questions for me to answer in your last response...you should c'mon out to the high grass country and get a little mud on the tires...makes you feel better and I bet it clears your mind about those silly Ole Refs!!!

Sadly, no I will not be pulling for you. If you do lose, I will not be posting pictures of upset players and making remarks about your team like your fan base did to us last year. Or how some have injected themselves into this thread because of a Draft loss.
You have the best coaching staff in the area. With an ounce of class, you probably would get support from area schools.
Who goes to another schools pep rally wearing your mascot just to interfere? Did he really think Lee would appreciate that? Or who allows a player from your team to enter our locker room after the game this year to talk trash? That kid was lucky he got out safe.

We scrimmaged Central. They have some athletes and can be dangerous but you guys should win pretty easily and move on.

This is the first I am hearing about one of our players allegedly entering your locker room to talk trash, but now that you have chosen to bring it up, I am sure we will have another 20-30 posts on the subject. The only thing I will say, not knowing a cottonpicking thing about it, is that our coaches would certainly not have "allowed" it to happen. If it happened, I am sure it was the immature and probably spontaneous decision of the person in question, just like the mascot situation was. And in case you forgot, I was one of the few people on here who fully supported the punishment of that kid, up to and including his suspension. Not only that but I think he should have paid for a replacement headgear, and I was one of the few people who agreed that Principal Lowe's apology to Lee was an appropriate gesture. But now that you have opened up this new can of worms, let the sparring begin!!!!

Yes a kid did come into our locker room after the game, and it almost got out of hand but some kids stopped it. Why did the kid think that would be acceptable behavior? It was learned. Why did the kid even go to the pep rally in the first place even though an apology was given? It was learned. These things just like vandalizing your own tennis courts and school and blaming it on us are learned behaviors from your area. You can justify them all you want.

This is not a Wilson-Riverheads thread and I will leave it at that. Like that goofball xcross says, "Wilson is playing basketball now".

It was meant as a joke and for the record I did not support Wilson's run through the playoffs. I do however like the coaching staff at Gap and have nothing but respect for Draft and how far they have come along since Bowers left. I was making light of the fact you Wilson fans appear to be above the mud slinging but take those little jabs from time to time. I know I stood beside a disgruntled one on Friday night as we played, that hated every minute of our success.

Now you are right about one thing though, this thread is about a very well played game between two area teams that both should hold their head up after that game. Don't you cheapen it when I was just tugging your chain a little knowing that y'all hate us.

GOOFBALL ???????? Red team does their talking on the field ! Unlike the green team !

You really need how to read between the lines man. The slew of questions, was making light of there isn't much to say about a GREAT defensive ballgame. You can say how great of a game it was, which I did, but theres only so much you can say about that. I have all the respect in the world for Rod and how he has done things at BG. I don't know the others so can't speak for them, I may not like them as a team, but it was a great contest and a shame it ended in any kind of controversy and a shame someone had to lose

Wilson Football:

First you use the word "allowed", as if someone gave the kid permission to do it, and then you use the word "learned" not once but twice. Maybe I am making too much of what you are saying, but it sounds as if you have this perception that our coaches look the other way or maybe even give their kids an OK to do things like what you are describing.

I feel certain that is not the case, and besides, from what I know of the set-up at Wilson, they go to great lengths to keep the teams separate by one team waiting while the other goes through the gate, etc. So when did this kid even have an opportunity to do this? My guess is that whatever happened is being greatly exaggerated.
