Not much of a recap tonight. 0430 comes early and as the math said, the Chargers lost the bubble on handling the Cougar speed in the second half. The first ended at 6-6 but it was one nasty half of football. Int eh first quarter each team had 2 personal fouls. Thats a statistic to look at tomorrow …. both teams had literally tons of yards in penalties!

The chargers now have three days to prep for JM. Hopefully they can shake off the bruises from tonight and play their game on Friday!

You and I knew this would be a Slobberknocker and, as expected, the Chargers were right there. Your concern is that Chancellor had only 1 offensive TD. Mine is that the Cougars got stymied in the first half. Well done Chargers. Lots of fight in both teams. Typical Charger/Cougar game. But Courtland had a little something extra. Like I said, this is the Cougars year to make a run but they may see Chancellor again and the outcome may be different.

Of course, following Courtland with JM would be a nightmare for most teams. If the West thinks they can play the Chancellor schedule and be successful, they'd be way wrong. GL to the Chargers in 2015. They'll still make the playoffs and anything can happen then.

Chancellor is who I thought they were, but they showed more fight than I thought they would. Their very first play was a penalty, and I thought "welp, here we go". Courtland also had their share of penalties. Chalk it up to the rivalry, I guess. The main story of the game was the Cougar defense. They bent but didn't break against the Charger no huddle. Their QB contain broke down a lot. Some of it was Chancellor QB Brown, but some of it was just bad defense. Chancellor should've only scored 7 but a bad play call by Courtland deep in their own territory ended up with Greene getting pushed back and fumbling in the end zone. Courtland should have just run it up the middle, but Greene also should've just fallen down instead of letting himself get driven back by the pile of Chargers. Regardless of that play, Greene was, and is, a beast. He was playing his own Madden game tonight, trucking Chargers like it was nothing.

Chancellor ran a nice read option attack at a frantic pace, and I thought it was gonna kill Courtland's depth later in the game. Courtland had trouble subbing and was caught with 10 men on the field a couple of times, yet they bent but didn't break. They had trouble stopping simple runs up the middle in the first half, but adjusted. Penalties hurt both teams in the first half. Courtland got the ball to start the second half and played Cougar football, and Chancellor had no answer. Blair Lawson is so fast, just as fast as King George's Jordan Aley. I thought the game was going to go down to the wire when Chancellor took only 4 plays to tie the game at 13, but it was all Courtland from there.

I would pay $20 to see Courtland play Lake Taylor. The Cougars are for real. Chancellor is good, but aren't going to take that next step this year. Too undisciplined and not physical enough.

like you said sloppy first half but I hate to see the refs rather than the players! fans don't pay ticket prices to see refs mark off yardage! way to many flags on both teams! enough about the zebras!
the shocking thing I saw in the game was how chancellor ran the ball on courtland! wisdom and Dunn had gapeing holes in the courtland d line especially in the first half. Brown passed well but had several passes dropped. looked like the charger spread gave the courtland defense trouble especially stopping the run. warning cougar fans the JM coaching staff was there and with their big o line and their bevy of backs I am sure they was licking their chops but they need to worry about chancellor next.
on the cougar side they had very little trouble rushing on chancellor especially the second half. the three headed monster came out in the second half fired up and the chargers could not stop them. Lawson was awesome and green and cheetum also! the courtland line opened up huge holes in the second half and you could tell the cougars were not to be denied in this game. courtland was the better team tonight but the chargers played inspired and hard but it wasn't good enough tonight. one questionable play that seemed to be the turning point of the game that didn't make sense to me was chancellor only losing by 6 early in the second half elected to go for a 4th and 17 from the 40 yard line rather kick courtland deep in their own territory miss fire on a pass giving courtland a short field. didn't take but a few plays before they scored a touchdown and it was all down hill for chancellor after that senseless gamble IMO!
All in all take away all the penalties it was a good hard hitting contest and a little closer than the score indicated as chancellor missed two makeable field goals that would have given them the lead at the half. but IMO the best team won this game but chancellor is very close to courtland in talent!

So chancellor will be real dangerous next year...
They will be. They will return virtually everyone. At least 8 will be 4th year starters. Not too many teams can bring that to the table. Of course, none of that means anything until they take the field in 2016. Should be and will be are two very different things. But expectations will be high.

The seasoned Courtland team cranked it up a notch in the second half and Chancellor couldn't respond. Typical of a young team that hasn't been in a lot of big games. The Chargers had their chance to be up by as many as 2 scores in the first half but credit the Cougar defense for bending but not breaking. As an Alum I was proud of the effort the Chargers gave. They just failed to execute and make plays when they needed to. Hats off to Courtland. They really took it to another level after the half. Hopefully Chancellor will use this as a learning experience. It takes 4 quarters when you are playing a good team.
With that said this was the worst officiated game I have seen in a long time. 21 penalties in 1 game. When there is a big game the refs should not play as prominent a role as they did. Call the obvious but the amount of holding calls both ways was ridiculous. There is holding on every play I get that but come on. Anyway the poor officiating had nothing to do with the outcome but it just is disappointing when it slowed the pace of the game and made the ref's more visible when they should not be.

I couldn't agree more--you see it in the NFL games as well. It seems as if the referees are inserting themselves into the mix way too much.
It was an intense ball game and the play on the field was the main focus, not the boys in the zebra suits.

Can't use the "young" excuse anymore. There's no reason Chancellor should still be this sloppy at this point, and they should be seasoned enough to hang in a game like that. It comes down to coaching and discipline at this point.

Hoos, there is some merit to what you said but when a team has been deep in playoff runs for a couple of years they have an advantage when playing a team with similar talent but limited experience in big games. Not an excuse just an observation. This was why Courtland punched the gas pedal and dominated the second half. Chancellor will bounce back. It was much better for this learning experience to occur now than week 1 of the play-offs. Man it would be nice if the play offs play out for these 2 to meet again in late Nov.

Don't you think the East would struggle with a schedule like that except for L.T..

Chancellor has had an easy schedule so far besides Courtland and Massaponax, losing to the two good teams they played (EV was/is banged up).

I wouldn't say easy. Riverbend, Courtland, EV (banged up or not, they're still 4 - 2), Liberty (Bealton), Massaponax and JM next. I think that's well beyond easy. IMO

I would say Courtland is in the top 3 in 4A-East at this point. Does JF have someone other than Jones that you need to stop?
#5 Cam Miller, not as fast as Jones, but really good. If not for Jones, he'd be a guy in the West everybody was talking about.

I think your top 10 is pretty good Rod. Last week, even Brentsville was undefeated but they weren't in your top 10. No, Courtland cannot be rated top 3. When they blew the game to Massaponax, they lost the privilege. If they hadn't, I believe they would be number 2 behind LT. But this is where they are. Regardless, #1 seed in their pod is the best they could have expected anyway in relationship to who they see in the playoffs.

Courtland and Chancellor combined for 21 penalties for 204 yards.
That's not counting the ones that was refused. I counted a couple of those. don't want to harp on the refs as most do a great hard job but that many is ridiculous! one of my colleagues on tv Tim Coleman says that the best refereed game is one that you don't even know they are there. some look for penalties so they can throw flags! the worst one I saw last night was a holding call on courtland! Lawson ran up the middle and ran about 30 yards and just after he got tackled 30 yards down field the line judge called holding and threw the flag late after the tackle. the holding had to happen as the back ran through the line of scrimmage so why didn't he throw it then rather than after the tackle late down the field? but to say the refs favored one team over the other would be false! they just threw them every chance they got! don't want to beat a dead horse the game is over! enough said about the zebras!

Stats don't lie. Courtland had 106 and Chancellor 98 yards of penalties. Pretty close to even if you ask me. What concerned me the most was the personal fouls. If my mind recalls correctly, Chancellor had 4 and Courtland 5 …. or something like that. Heck, they both had 2 each in the first quarter. Crazy …..

It must have gotten chippy in there. I can understand Chancellor getting the fouls. They were pumped and needed to make a statement. But I know those Cougars ran a hell of a lot of sprints for theirs. Personal fouls are just not acceptable at Courtland. The Seniors and Captains ran even more because it's their job to make sure this doesn't happen. They are the leaders on the field. They are the ones held accountable. Their example sets the standard. Hall will be pissed and I wouldn't be surprised to see some on the bench on Friday.

Lafayette, JF, Sherando
Maybe, but Courtland lost to Massaponax. The others are undefeated. Now, none of this group would beat Ponax either and Courtland knows they choked it away, but it is what it is. Wins and losses is all that matters. Cougars will be a top seed in their pod as long as they manage to win out, so where they are in the top ten doesn't matter a lick because their playoff position will not change.

We all know Courtland didn't really lose to Ponax. Scoreboard and record says they did, but everyone knows what happened.

Why?

Why?

I don't really get the anti-Sherando sentiments here. The same things were said about them in 2013. They've played as tough a schedule as most anyone out there, if not tougher than most, and they've come out undefeated.

I don't get it either which is why I would like for people to explain.

They've rolled through a tough schedule while ranking third in points allowed in 4A behind Champe and GW-Danville. They've got a bonafide superstar on defense, a strong running game and a solid system quarterback who makes very few mistakes.

People can certainly guess that Courtland would beat them head-to-head and maybe they would, but the rankings are not about guessing, they are about what we have actually seen teams accomplish.

Courtland and Sherando have played similar schedules, the Cougars offense has been better but that is counterbalanced on the other side of the ball where the Warriors defense has been. So, they are remarkably similar teams where one is undefeated and one has a loss.

Easy decision to make, imo.

But, the floor is open for someone to make Courtland's case.

Wow...touchy-touchy. Sherando is really good....probably will go deep in the playoffs....could beat Courtland.....but I think Courtland has the speed + physical play on defense to be just a little better than the others...that's all.....could be wrong.

I don't think that anyone is touchy, just asking you to support your statements for the purpose of discussion. Nothing more, nothing less.

Maybe you had some salient points to make.

I always find these conversations interesting because you never hear people talk about match ups. I have seen Sherando play, and even though they beat EV, I left thinking not very fast and really not a lot of super stars (The LB that has the offers did almost nothing in the game, offense or defense). But they were a good executing team and are well coached. As a whole they have good players in many positions. We were without 3 of our fastest guys and I don't think they had a player that could have kept up with them all game. If they play a team with speed, I think they are in trouble. If they play a team that is physical and wants to pound the ball, I think they have a good chance in beating them. Now they are smart, the grass on the field was very high (you couldn't even see the kicking tee). They know who they are. From what I have seen and hear, I think they would play Courtland pretty tough and if they got a few turn overs, they might beat them (Cortland seems to have a turn over problem, so that is not so far fetched). JF is interesting, man those kids are very good at what they run, and they have a very good to great RB. I just don't think they would fair well against Courtland. Not sure how JF would stop that running attack and Courtland has a good enough Defense to shut down JF enough times.

You make some good points @EVcyc, but Courtland is in the East now, so there isn't a chance they'd play those teams until the state final.

I also think EV could beat Chancellor if they met in the playoffs healthy

Running Hatfield's spread offense and healthy, yes I can see where EV could win against the Chargers. They're gunslinger football (unless they come up with anothe Kube). They've done it before and it may happen again this year.

No gun-slinging going on this year.....don't have the receivers as in years past.....heavy on the run right now
