Since Salem was opened as a school in 1977, the team they have played the most is...Northside, at 50 bouts (46 regular season appearances and 4 playoff matchups). Well, after #51, that ends. Northside has officially dropped Salem as an opponent. The two teams have met at least once a year with the exception of the COVID 2021 season. Northside started the series on a 7 game win streak. Not coincidentally, by Willis White's second year in 1984 that streak ended. Salem posted a 36-6-1 record since that point for an overall series record of 36-13-1.
Sad to see, many Spartans would consider Northside their second rival, right behind Pulaski County. The other two long-time series left standing are Cave Spring (only missed games in 1990 and 1991, not sure the reason) and Blacksburg (played every year minus the real 2021 season and last season when Bburg forfeited both, also played 3 times in the playoffs).
Salem will replace Northside with Dinwiddie and also replace LCA with EC Glass to open the season.
