PLAYER OF THE GAME: Malik Martin was sensational proving his worth as a top back.

TAPPAHANNOCK- The top ranked team in 1A played host to 5A Deep Run tonight and unfortunately for the Wildcats they found that the lower number doesn’t mean decrease in talent. Essex dominated from beginning to end and eliminated any doubt of any chance the Wildcats thought they would have of an upset. Malik Martin and Terrell Hundley played major parts in making sure that was a fact.

Deep Run came out trying to show this was their night. They moved the ball into scoring position but was held to a field goal attempt. The snap would sail over the holders held killing Deep Run’s chance for motivation. Essex would be eager to show what their offense could do.

Martin got things going for Essex as the team marched steadily across midfield when he bolted untouched for a 46-yard touchdown to make it 7-0 Trojans at the 6:46 mark of the first quarter. After shutting down Deep Run’s offense, Essex would complete a 95-yard drive that ended with Martin high stepping into the endzone to make it 14-0 Trojans with 2:13 left in the 1st.

Early in the 2nd quarterback Tesahn Nelson would hit Terrell Hundley on a quick hitch in which he would weave through traffic and take it 71-yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0 Essex.

Following Hundley’s 2nd interception, Essex would drive 99-yards with a punishing ending as Kewan Dameron would smash through defenders for a 5-yard touchdown. Essex would go into halftime with a comfortable 28-0 lead.

Deep Run came out undiscouraged by the score and made sure to avoid a shutout. Quarterback Aaron Wright would find Lucas Carlisle for a 3-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-7 with 8:02 in the 3rd.

Seconds later, Martin would launch throw a hole and out into the open field for an 80-yard race to the endzone to make it 35-7 Essex with 7:44 left to play in the 3rd.

Martin would get his fourth touchdown on a 44-yard run at the 11:45 mark of the fourth.

Martin rushed for 220 yards and 4 touchdowns on the night. Hundley had 2 interceptions and a touchdown reception. Essex goes into their bye with a 4-0 record and will face James Monroe.

Deep Run will fall to 0-3 and will look to get their first victory of the season as they travel to face Glen Allen (0-3) who hasn’t scored a point this year.

Coach John Fulks and his staff should have a lock on the top spot as its primarily a race to see who will secure #2 in 1A.
