In less than a year, Franklin County senior heavyweight Taylor Horner has enhanced his wrestling profile: from Group AAA state place winner in Virginia to a place winner on the national stage.

Horner came in eighth in the 2010 Beast of the East tournament, an event the Eagles competed in for the first time, Sunday in Newark, Del.

Horner entered the event with an undefeated 2010-11 record and finished 3-3 against top-flight campaigners.

Horner won his first two bouts, the first by decision, 7-3, and the second by pin at 1:51.

In the semifinals, he suffered a 4-2 loss, a setback that dropped him into the consolation bracket.

In three bouts in that bracket, the last of which was the seventh-eighth place match, Horner was 1-2 with a 3-1 victory, a loss by pin and a loss by decision, 3-2.

All three of Horner's losses were to seeded wrestlers.

Also competing in the tournament for the Eagles were Andrew Turner, who was 1-2 at 125; Josh Altice, who was 2-2 at 135; Brock Adams, who was 1-2 at 140; Justin Altice, who was 1-2 at 145; and Jonathan Jones, who was 3-2 at 160.

The Eagles placed second in Thursday's Richmond Invitational at Hermitage High School.

The event was postponed from this past weekend because of inclement weather.

The schedule change allowed the wrestlers who competed in the Beast of the East to wrestle.

FCHS won this tournament last year. This year a dual-team format was used.

The Eagles dropped a two-point, 32-20 loss to Ocean Lakes in the finals.

FCHS won four matches to reach the finals: Patrick Henry-Ashland, 77-4; Hermitage, 66-12; Thomas Dale, 67-12; and Spotsylvania, 84-0.

FCHS is 8-1 in dual matches this season.

The Eagles return to the mats next week in the annual Agie Skeens Memorial tournament, hosted by Grundy.

Last year's event was postponed because of inclement weather.

FCHS won this tournament for the first time in 2006 and placed second in 2007 and 2008

In 2008, former standouts James Smith (145) and James Bisnett (160) won individual championships.

The Eagles have competed in this tournament for more than 20 years and during that time, 24 wrestlers have won individual championships. Six of those have captured multiple crowns.

On New Year's Eve, FCHS will compete in the ninth annual Spencer Chang Duals at Martinsville Middle School.

The Eagles are the two-time reigning champions and have won the tournament three out of the last four years.
