Greetings from chilly Darling Stadium on this final Thursday before Halloween. It's essentially the Peninsula District Championship between the host Phoebus Phantoms (6-1) and the undefeated Woodside Wolverines (8-0) out of Newport News.

It's Senior Night for Phoebus. Both of these teams are ranked in the Top 10 in the state on VaPreps - the Phantoms at No. 4 in Class 3 and Wolverines at No. 5 in Class 5.

Follow Updates here and via Twitter @ hatfieldsports tonight!

Before we get started, let's take a look at the Predictions and Preview from earlier...

Woodside (8-0) at Phoebus (6-1) . . . Over the past 15 meetings between Phoebus and Woodside, the Phantoms have prevailed 13 times. Many of them have been close though, including the 19-13 escape for Phoebus last year and 13-6 victory on a Saturday night in September during the 2017 campaign. Of course, a couple of those Woodside wins – the 15-0 shutout in 2016 and 14-9 victory from 2011 that ended a 52-game winning streak by Phoebus that at the time was not only a VHSL-record, but the nation’s longest – were quite memorable. What will be remembered about the 2019 encounter?

Woodside comes in undefeated, still in the hunt for the top seed in the Region 5A playoff field as their stifling defense – headlined by Menchville transfers in Seth Naotala and his younger brother Koa – has yet to give up a touchdown to a Peninsula District foe in seven league games. In fact, the only points they’ve given up to a PD opponent came a week ago on a field goal in their 47-3 thumping of Kecoughtan. Norview is the only team to score a touchdown on them, though the Pilots fell 32-14.

Phoebus comes in as no slouch. They’ve pitched three shutouts and have won six in a row – all by at least 23 points – since their 23-22 loss to Lake Taylor in the opener on a field goal. Josiah Silver registered a pair of sacks from his defensive line spot in that game against the Titans. When the Phantoms handled arch-rival Hampton, their defense recorded six sacks from five different players, none of which were Silver, so the Woodside offensive line will have its hands full dealing with all the different defenders chasing their dual-threat QB Kahleef Jimmison.

Operating the Wing-T attack for Woodside, Jimmison has completed nearly 64% of his passes for 627 yards and a 7-3 TD/Int. ratio while also rushing for 395 yards and seven scores. Woodside will spread the ball around to several different ball carriers, including Bryce Phipps, Tyler Thompson, Breyden Byrd and receiver Ricky Key Jr. (26Rec. 398Yds. 6TD’s). Thompson – who can also play some QB – and Phipps have combined for over 1200 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns.

The Phoebus defense has turned opponents over regularly and part of it is because they do such a good job against the run with Silver, Austin Gilliam, Trevion Stevenson and company. Behind them, Corey Wilson is the reigning Peninsula District Defensive Player of the Year and brings the type of versatility to make an impact versus the run or the pass for Jeremy Blunt’s Phantoms.

Beyond the Naotala brothers, the Woodside defense has seen a number of different players step up this year. Two of the veteran, multi-year starters are Tyreece White from his defensive end position and Andrew Chamblee at safety along with Jimmison occupying a corner spot. All have scholarship offers, and more than anything the Wolverines want to dare Phoebus to throw. While QB Chris Daniels of the Phantoms has performed well in a number of big games, directing them to the Class 3 State Championship last year, the strength of the Phoebus offense is their running game.

There might not be a better backfield rushing tandem in all of Hampton Roads than Navy commit Jaylen White and junior Anthony Turner, who’s being recruit by UVA, Akron, ODU and a host of others. That duo combined for a whopping 289 yards rushing and eight touchdowns against Kecoughtan earlier this season, plus combined for 292 yards and a couple of scores on Warwick a week ago. Moving the chains on third down and finishing drives has been problematic for Woodside’s opponents, but the Phoebus offense should enter plenty confident given the fact they are averaging 47.5 points per game during their six-game winning streak.

In years past, one would ordinarily give the offensive edge to Woodside with some of the explosive weapons they’ve had around QB’s (Aaron Evans, Donnell Lewis, Tyhier Tyler and others) that can throw or run effectively. Additionally, the Phoebus defense would have the advantage as they’ve had so many hard-nosed tacklers from the linebacker and defensive line spots. Oddly enough, the offensive advantage might go to Phoebus in this year’s matchup and the better defense statistically to this point has been Woodside.

Both rely heavily on being able to run the ball, so the offensive line that can control things the best will give their team the best chance of coming out on top. When it comes to running downhill and getting those hard to earn yards, Phoebus tends to find a way late in games. If Danny Dodson’s Wolverines contain that ground attack, then their defense has to be considered a threat to take them far come playoff time in a Region 5A full of high-scoring offenses.

Matt Says: Phoebus 14-10
VHSL-Reference.com Says: Phoebus 21-20
Coach Young Says: Phoebus 18-12

It'll be Phoebus ball to start as Woodside kicks off and we are underway at Darling Stadium.

Jaylen White returns the game's opening kickoff 13 yards to the Phantoms' 32. Phoebus uses a time-out before even the first play from scrimmage, then coming out of the time-out, they get flagged for a false start.

On the first play from scrimmage, it's junior running back Anthony Turner gaining 5. On 2nd & 10, QB Chris Daniels scrambles for 15 yards near midfield to move the chains for Jeremy Blunt's Phantoms.

After a 2-yard run by Bryce Phipps, the Wolverines go to the air on 2nd & 8 from their own 20 and it's a bad result for the visitors from Newport News...

The Phoebus defense had four interceptions a week ago against Warwick. Once again, they are opportunistic and supplying the offense with a pick-me-up.

Following the pick-six, Woodside begins at their own 35. Tyler Thompson gains a yard on a sweep, then they go to the air to go-to weapon Ricky Key Jr. in the passing game. His 9-yard catch is aided by a personal foul on Phoebus that puts the Wolverines in enemy territory.

Woodside has it at the Phoebus 40 following the penalty and they go with the QB sneak with Kahleef Jimmison. They go back to the stop route with Key and he picks up 11. An unnecessary roughness penalty takes Woodside half the distance to the goal.

The Phoebus defensive front holds tough - Rover Corey Wilson, lineman Ibri Harrell and others with some key stops against the run before Woodside only gains a couple on 3rd & 8 from the 10 on a pass to Bryce Phipps in the flat.

On 4th & 6 from the Phoebus 8, the Phantoms get called for their second encroachment penalty of this series. Just a bit too antsy. That means half the distance to the goal for 4th & 2 from the 4. Danny Dodson and company use a time-out with 3:22 to go in the opening quarter.

Smart move there by Dodson in my opinion. No need to go chasing a touchdown. Every point is precious in a potential defensive slugfest like this one, where I said earlier on ESPN Radio 94.1 today that I believe the first to 13 points will win.

Phoebus will start their second offensive series at their own 22 with 3:13 to go in the opening period instead of the 37 due to an illegal chop black. The Phantoms run with junior Anthony Turner and he gains 8 and then 3, but they get backed up with another 15-yard penalty.

The Phantoms have 8 penalties for 69 yards in this opening quarter. Perhaps a too geeked up for this battle? Regardless, they need to be more disciplined to win this game. The Woodside defense - thanks to siblings Seth and Koa Naotala (with the Troy Polamalu hairstyle) - limit the run game and Chris Daniels is under duress on 3rd & 6 from Markus Watts. His pass is incomplete.

Phoebus barely gets off the punt as it's almost blocked by the Naotala wearing #9. That's Seth. It goes out of bounds and Woodside takes over at the 40 of Phoebus with 22 seconds left in the opening stanza.

Woodside has shown a couple of Cover 0 looks defensively, loading up on the run, until the Phantoms strike through the air with their longest play from scrimmage of the half thus far - QB Chris Daniels finding Devontae White for a 16-yard completion.

The Wolverines buckle down though as Andrew Chamblee from his safety spot prevents another completion to White. Then Seth Naotala makes a couple of impact sticks before Phoebus is called for their 9th penalty - a holding. On 3rd & 26, the pass by Daniels is incomplete. The Phnatoms punt it away.

Woodside will start their 4th series with 7:09 until the break, trailing the Phantoms 7-3, at their own 25.

The Wolverines get called for a holding to wipe out a Tyler Thompson run on the first play of their 4th series. Corey Wilson had a big hit on the play. Phoebus is ready defensively for the trap as Joshua Austin stops Bryce Phipps in his tracks. Kahleef Jimmison shows his athleticism on a QB keeper that gains 18 yards.

On 3rd & 3, the Phantoms step up and read their keys well, sniffing out the double hand-off as Kyrell McKinney and his mates send Koa Naotala back for a loss of 2.

Woodside punts it away and Phoebus takes over for their 4th offensive series at the 49-yard line of the Wolverines with 4:32 until half-time.

Andrew Chamblee comes in and nails Anthony Turner on the first play, limiting him to a gain of 3. On the next play, he gets just 2 as it's Seth Naotala with another ferocious hit. The Wolverines are hitting a little too hard though as the officials get them for a personal foul.

A couple plays later, Woodside is called for encroachment. The Wolverines are now up to 5 penalties for 44 yards on the evening

Phoebus is in the midst of a long drive, about to snap it on 3rd & 7 from the Woodside 12 with 1:06 till half-time. They converted their last third down - a 3rd & 3 from the 22 - with QB Chris Daniels finding Kymari Gray for 7 yards on a hitch.

Anthony Turner rushes for 3 and then it's Jimmison with a pass breakup on 2nd & 7.

Stats at the break...

HALF:

Phoebus 7:

Chris Daniels - 3-8 for 29Yds; 2Car. 18Yds.
Anthony Turner - 12Car. 30Yds.
Devontae White - 1Rec. 16Yds.
Corey Wilson - 5 Tackles (3 Solo)
Kyrell McKinney - 5 Tackles, 0.5TFL
Jahden Jackson - 28-yard INT TD return

Phantoms - 24 plays for 77 total yards (3-8 for 29 pass yards; 16 rushes for 48 yards); 0 turnovers; 9 penalties for 85 yards

Woodside 3:

Kahleef Jimmison - 4-5 for 35Yds. 0-1 TD/Int. ratio; 5Car. 17Yds.
Ricky Key Jr. - 3Rec. 33Yds.
Bryce Phipps - 5Car. 6Yds; 1Rec. 2Yds.
Seth Naotala - 11 Tackles (6 Solo)
Esau Scott - 5 Tackles (all assisted)
Koa Naotala - 4 Tackles (2 Solo)

Wolverines - 17 plays for 57 total yards (4-5 for 35 pass yards; 12 rushes for 22 yards); 1 turnover; 5 penalties for 44 yards

Woodside gets the ball to begin the 2nd half at their own 33 following a 29-yard kickoff return from Kahleef Jimmison, also a standout at QB and DB for the Wolverines.

Bryce Phipps runs for 7 yards between the tackles to open the second half. That sets up a shot down the field with Jimmison and the passing game. He finds Ricky Key Jr. for 32 yards down the right sideline and into Phoebus territory.

Phipps runs for 3 and 8 more. An injury time-out and it's Phipps being able to walk off under his own power. The Wolverines have it 2nd & 4 at the 11-yard line of Phoebus after his run of 6.

A couple of Phoebus penalties - they're up to 11 for the game with 9:31 still to play in the third period - has Woodside at the 1 after a sneak of QB Kahleef Jimmison. Phoebus defensive lineman Josh Austin jogs off after getting dinged up, and the Wolverines will likely try to muscle this one in with a power back here.

Trevion Stevenson - a 2021 prospect of note with a great frame - makes a big hit on 2nd & Goal for the Phoebus defense on QB Kahleef Jimmison. Defensive Back Jaheim Valentine was limping after the play and might've been in on that hit of Jimmison too.

Woodside Coach Danny Dodson uses a time-out before this critical 3rd & 1.

Richardson may get a shot later in this contest for a game-winner.

Illegal kick out of bounds on the ensuing kick-off results in a 5-yard penalty and Woodside re-kicking. That leads to a big return that is like an even longer one in an ordinary game.

The relentless motor of Seth Naotala - along with Phoebus committing a couple of unsportsmanlike penalties - results in the Phantoms booting it away on 4th & 31 from the Woodside 43. That came after a 5-yard run on 3rd & 36 by QB Chris Daniels.

The punt is an outstanding one for the Phantoms, pinning Woodside inside the 5 at their own 3 with 5:25 to go in the 3rd period. It is worth noting that Seth Naotala nearly blocked the punt - - the second time he was a hair away from getting the ball.

A terrific QB play-fake by Chris Daniels, who gets 8 yards before Kahleef Jimmison wraps him up with a firm tackle. They then give it to Anthony Turner, who moves the chains and a 5-yard penalty on the Wolverines pushes them up to the 11. Turner gains 3 and then a great run of 7 yards has them at the 1.

That was some vintage, smash-mouth Phoebus football. They ran it hard and leaned on their offensive line - Matthieu Watts, Amaree Bailey, Messiah Marrero, Austin Gilliam and Ibri Harrell - to open up just enough room for Turner to plow ahead.

Woodside's 11th penalty - a half the distance personal foul - doomed that drive. The Phoebus defense has been super tough up front.

Navy commit Jaylen White of Phoebus fair catches the punt at the Woodside 35 as time expires in the third period.

This is a golden chance to put this one away - and on ice - for Jeremy Blunt's Phantoms as they look to keep hope alive for the top seed in Region 3A for the playoffs, where Hopewell is the top dog at the moment. York is in between the Phantoms and Blue Devils by the way.

Look for more hard running between the tackles with Turner, and possibly mixing in Jaylen White some as well.

The Phantoms keep it on the ground out of their full house look on offense with Jaylen White picking up 5, but Wil Sanchez and Xavier Rios stuff him on 2nd down for only a yard gain. On 3rd & 4, the Phantoms throw a screen to White and Woodside DE Tyreece White read it well to keep him from moving the chains.

Got no problem with Phoebus going for it on 4th & 3 from the Woodside 28, but going shotgun to do so was not the best of ideas as the big fella Rios quickly swallows up QB Daniels.

Woodside takes over at their own 27 with 9:32 remaining in the game as the Wolverines trail Phoebus 14-6.

The Wolverines hand it off to Bryce Phipps and he appears to gain positive yardage, but the Wolverines get called for their 13th and 14th penalties of the night on the same play. It's a hold and a personal foul. They take a shot on 2nd & long and it's incomplete. On 3rd & 27 or thereabouts, Jimmison takes off and scrambles for 12.

Surprisingly, Woodside HC Danny Dodson has the offense on the field before a 4th & 15 from their own 22. They can't possibly be going for it with 8 minutes left to play and down 8. The Wolverines use a time-out and their better judgement to punt it away.

Phoebus fair catches the punt at the 50 with a 14-6 lead with 7:41 remaining. Another chance to put this one away.

Turner displayed some breakaway ability there. He has offers from UVA, ODU and recently added one from Akron.

This has been a sloppy game with a total of 27 penalties. Yet, the Phoebus defense has answered the call and that goal-line stand in the 3rd quarter was enormous.

Woodside starts their 5th series of the second half at the 50. They go to the air with QB Kahleef Jimmison finding WR Ricky Key Jr. His 5th reception of the night totals 21 yards, giving him 86 yards for the game. However, two incomplete passes with a delay of game penalty mixed in brings up 3rd & 15 from the Phoebus 29 for the Wolverines as we tick under 7 minutes to play.

Woodside burns their final time-out with 6:56 to play. The 3rd & 15 pass with Jimmison rolling out to his right is incomplete. Obviously the Wolverines will go for it here, trailing by two scores and needing a long completion to give them any hope.

Kahleef Jimmison - who had a pass breakup the last series - finds Ricky Key on a deep cross worth 15 yards. Then Jimmison keeps it, runs for 5 and Phoebus is hit with a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty. That puts the Wolverines at the Phoebus 34 with 4:10 to play.

A delay of game penalty - Woodside's 18th infraction of the night - pushed them back 5 yards. It's Hail Mary time and I'd throw it up to Ricky Key (8 grabs for 117 yards).

They do exactly that... he catches it, but he's out of bounds.
