Gate City over Cleveland, TN 82 -72

Watched this online. Very, very talented team with Cleveland featuring a Div 1 prospect as well. Cleveland led by 17 points in this game at one point during the second quarter. Incredible comeback by Gate City. One thing of concern with Gate City I noticed is there perimeter defense. It's suspect. It's not bad, but it's not great, and Cleveland in the 4th quarter had point blank wide open three point shots and just could not make them. They could not buy a basket in the 4th, and they were not just open, getting wide open. That's one concern for Gate City that could be a problem, especially in the Big Show where Lee is going to be in the mix, and Lee has been there and done that. Gate City is better than Lee this year, but not by nearly as much as people think. Lee could beat Gate City 3 out of 10 times, and it only takes 1 in the Big Show. Gate City better pick up it's half court defense. As for offense, nobody in Virginia is going to stop GC from scoring. Nobody can guard McClung at the AA level. Cleveland was very, very athletic and lightening fast, and he would just take them off the drive and elevate over them or pull up and hit, etc. He also gets lots of kick outs to Ervin or finds him in the lane. GC is going to score and score bunches, but they can be scored on. When McClung is cold and his jumper isn't falling like against Cleveland in the first half, he has the ability to just take the ball to the basket and score, and somethings being tripled teamed once he arrived in the lane, and he just elevates over top of people and puts the ball in the basket. Heck of a player!

By looking at their scores this year and the level of their competition, GC is going to score 80-90 points a game and I don't think anybody else is built to score that much. I just think it's theirs to win this year and really don't see anybody remotely close to them. Hopefully when they get further into the playoffs some teams will provide a test, but as I said I just think they are 15-20 points better than anybody at the 2A level.

You obviously have not seen Radford play. I’m not saying Radford will beat GC but they can definitely play with them and stay within 20 points. They are probably the best defensive team at 2A level.

Have you saw GC play?

I'm familiar with Radford as Martinsville has played them the past 3-4 years but not this year. The pg Radford has is cat quick and can take over a game. The coaches son has a really good shot and you can't leave him open. If Jones comes back from his knee problem and can get close to 100% he'll give them some inside game. What is he now 6'5"- 6'6"? But with that being said, I just don't think Radford can score with GC. Dan River gave up like 68 to McClung last year, held other people down and it still took an unbelievable comeback to knock them out of the tourney. Everybody is a year older and better, so i just think it's far SWVa's turn to get the chip this year. Just an old man's opinion, and I've been wrong before.

I have only seen GC in highlight videos on the internet. I think they have a real good shot at winning it all but there are teams that can play with them. McClung is special and you just don't see players like that every year.

I don't think Gate City is challenged at all till they get to Richmond. I may regret saying that later, but I truly believe it.

Wow, the ole hindsight game. At the time, the assessment paid by the other poster wasn't bad at all. Gate City was playing some weak defense, and they turned it on and picked it up big-time at the end of the season. It was more than reasonable to think or predict that Radford could play with GC at the time. OKC, it's easy to look back and point out where somebody was wrong. It's to easy. It's safe. It's simple. It's also somewhat cowardly. It's cheap. Now, if you were looking back through posts and pointing out where posters were correct or making an accurate assessment, then that's different. I feel confident that you don't take that approach though. Your the "normal" citizen of 2018.
