Gate City Picks Up First Win With Old School Football Over Virginia High 13-0


The Blue Devils of Gate City (1-6) entered the rain delayed game Saturday night searching for their first win of the season. The Blue Devils had to wait another night to pick up the win. The rain forced postponement of the game from Friday night and was held on Saturday night in an overcast night.

The Virginia High Bearcats (3-3) entered the game coming off a win over Chilhowie. Gate City was searching for their first win. After a scoreless first half, Coach Houseright went away from the spread and went old school with the T formation. The Blue Devils took the second half kickoff and pounded the football 81 yards and six minutes off the clock for the games first score of the night.


Sophomore running back Matthew McClung carried the load to the VHS 1 yard line where QB Hunter Collier scored the game’s first TD with a little less than six minutes to play in the 3rd quarter.


Virginia High mounted a drive of their own, until defensive back Tyler Hamilton stepped in front of a VHS QB Ryan Bradley’s pass and returned it 57 yards for the second GC touchdown.


Gate City tallied up 225 yards rushing with McClung taking the bulk of the load with 109 yards. Collier added 96 yards. GC rushed with 51 attempts and only 8 pass plays on the night.


Virginia High division one prospect Jordan Sewell was held out of the end zone, but tallied 5 receptions for 119 yards. VHS had 151 yards passing on 18 attempts and were held to 85 yards rushing by a strong GC defense.
