I'm not sure of Boone's record without looking it up, but they don't look very good at all. Mac is having a huge game so far though.
Ok - I'm a Lee supporter as everyone knows on here.
And I'm also a huge fan of Gate City and McClung/Ervin combo - and have always thought nothing but the best of them all season and have rooted for them in every game they've played this season so far.
But I have to admit I'm a little perplexed why the Devils still have their very best two players still in the game when they are up by 50 points with 3 minutes to go in the game.
I'd be afraid of a freak injury or someone getting undercut on a shot, or something else.
Lord knows I don't anything to happen to these boys - they are tremendous high school players who I love to keep up with.
I understand about going after records and all, but seriously.............

McClung ends up with 45 points on the night and moves to number 3 on the single season All-Time scoring list surpassing Robinson. It looks like he will easily surpass Moses Malone and Allen Iverson for the single season VHSL scoring record with the amount of games he has left. Additionally, it's going to be nailbitingly close for him to become the All-Time VHSL scoring leader (most points scored in a High School career).

I agree with the injury possibility, but I am getting turned off by the sportsmanship aspect. How does the opponent feel when GC plays their top players so deep in the game with BIG leads? The between the legs dunk is nice for McClung and GC players and fans, but imo just not cool with big leads. Beware the basketball gods karma, and I am now rooting against them because of the sportsmanship issue. I am sure you disagree pizzzzza, but that's cool too,

Obviously, the main reason Mac is playing so late into games is to go for the state records for single season and all time.
( I guess you could add to that the 'short bench' the team appears to have this season, but it's so hard to judge since they play the "Big 3" most of the game)
And people seem forget he's a KID - high school - who's playing his last season as a high school athlete.
I don't mind him have his fun out there, and maybe even hot-dogging it a little....he's earned it.
However, I just cringe every time I see him drive to the hoop late in the game, or go up for a spectacular dunk - and see something unfortunate happening to him, whether it's on purpose or accidental.
The kid HAS GAME - just want to see him continue his success the rest of the year - and then on to Georgetown!
I understand that, but doing it the right way would be more impressive to me. Is the scoring record so important that character gets trumped. And the coach should be ashamed. McClung is an outstanding player with or without the record. If GC has 10 players then the last 5 need to be in the game with at least 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Its a running clock and those players practice too. And respect the opponent's coach and players.It's ok to disagree!

The only one that has publicly complained to my knowledge has been Abingdon.
I, as a fan of a fellow school in Gate City's district, see no problem with it. I understand why it's being done and that's that. However, your point is valid about the risk for the reward. I have no beef with it, but it is risky.
Coach Vermillion has been nothing but class towards Ridgeview. He and our coach Robinette had a lengthy pre-game discussion Tuesday night, laughing and carrying on like coaches who have nothing but respect for one another.

Gate City point guard Mac McClung did not disappoint on Senior Night as the Blue Devils closed out the regular season by blasting Daniel Boone.
McClung scored 30 of his 45 points in the first half as Gate City (21-1) dominated the contest from start to finish. Zac Ervin added 25 points for the Blue Devils.
Gate City went 5-0 against teams from Tennessee during the 2017-18 season, beating Boone twice and knocking off Knoxville Christian, Tennessee High and Cleveland as well. The Blue Devils also bested Science Hill in a preseason exhibition.

because after their top three sit, the talent level drops off big time, to beat this team you expose the 4th and 5th starters and the subs that replace them, offensive rebounding is a must also, they dont box out extremely hard either, so they have weakness to exploit, but the top three can score points
Well I kind of figured it drops off due to the fact of the talent of the Big 3 that scores the bulk of the points.
My point is.....you're risking an unnecessary injury at that point in the game.
I certainly would think that a 50 point lead would be "safe" in the 4th quarter, regardless of the talent level......besides, these kids deserve a chance to play as well.
