Last night George Mason boys defeated Madison County 51-47. Even though Mason has made it to VCU the last couple years this still comes as a surprise. Madison has a weak schedule but Mason hasn't really dominated this year, especially dropping their first meeting against Central. These 2 teams will meet again in 7 days, this time in Madison.

This result is really, really surprising!

Madison County schools were closed Monday due to snow so I thought the game was canceled as well. Nope. They played in Falls Church. I missed the game but my buddy said that Madison could not throw it in the ocean last night. Apparently, Mason had a gimmick defense they ran really well (some sort of zone). The Mason coach is a crafty, smart guy.

Hopefully this will be a wake up call. After the last few articles in the Daily Progress constantly talking about state titles, maybe the Mounties started believing the press? Can't just show up and expect to win.

I would not describe Madison's schedule as weak. The BRD is not all that strong this year (MC, William Monroe and Mason are about it). Their non-district games include East Rock, Culpeper Co and Orange Co. East Rock is one of the top teams in 2A; Culpeper is a 3A young team who recently upset EV and Orange is a 5A team...MC split with ER, beat Culpeper twice and beat Orange soundly with one more game with them.

Does Mason still play its home games in that odd little basement gym with very little seating capacity? If so, then that fact alone might explain this loss. That place has to give them a huge advantage over any visiting team.

My evaluation of the Madison schedule was based solely on "that other website" and their strength of schedule rating of -5.5 compared to other 2A teams with much more positive sos ratings. I think Madison is a quality team and one of the top teams in the state. I watched Lee vs. Martinsville and I'm certain they would be a challenge for either of those teams. It's bound to get really interesting in the next 2 weeks or so...

Mason plays their home games in the gym under the Henderson Middle School. It is a bit claustrophobic. That being said, Mason is always a tough out.

GM has lost one home game in 3+ seasons, so this result shouldn't surprise anyone. However, after losing 10 seniors from their 29-1 team last year, I can see how they are flying under people's radar! LOL.
