George Wythe had four players score in double-digits and they overcame a 10-point deficit to defeat Atlantic Shores 67-58 in the Virginia High School Slamfest at Bishop Sullivan Catholic.
The Bulldogs took an early 10-6 lead but an 8-0 run by Atlantic Shores, including to stickbacks by Christian Kimbrough, put the Seahawks up by four. George Wythe didn't score their first points of the 2nd half until a layup by point guard Maurice Coleman. However, the Bulldogs ended the half on an 11-0 run to end the half to cut the deficit to 28-27 at halftime.
Wythe took the lead with the first basket of the second half on a stickback by Eric Crews. Senior Brandon Holley was fouled on a 3-point attempt and his three free throws gave George Wythe a 33-31 lead with about five minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. Coleman finished the quarter strong with a layup, a dish to Holley for a three and a free throw to give the Bulldogs a 41-36 lead to end the 3rd quarter.
Wythe had their biggest lead (44-36) after a 3-point play by Nelson to start the 4th quarter. Crews, who missed most of the 1st half due to foul trouble, scored 9 of his 13 points in the 4th quarter. Coleman was 10 of 11 from the free throw line including a perfect 8 of 8 in the 4th. He added 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists to earn the Most Valuable Player award.
