If Giles beat Galax, the Glenvar/Giles winner is the team to beat IMO. With all due respect to Richlands, Union and Appomattox (agree you could make a case for any) but if Giles wins they will only have 1 loss in the last 30 games or so and Glenvar is the defending state champs with most key players back and they beat Giles on the road last year. Some of you will say this or that but not sure how you could come to any other logical conclusion when you consider everything.

No disrespect but i dont see any impressive wins from the list above. Same could be said for Richlands and Union. Christiansburg is down, Cave is winless and even though some state that Galax is a tough team theyve still only won 1 game. You could look at Gate City the same as Galax. They are literally 4 plays away from being 4-2. Too early to pick a team to beat IMO other than Appomattox who has the more impressive resume i believe with wins over Heritage, Rustburg and Buckingham.

James River is 3-2 and gave Botetourt a good game. Galax is a very good 1a team . Grayson County beat 3a Allegheny who beat up Cave Spring . Glenvar and Giles have answered all the challenges. That being said Appomattox has been impressive , very impressive . Heritage is not that good .!

Yes i just noticed after i posted they have only won 1 game. Hard to pick a favorite at this point for me. Would like to see the Giles game tonight. Dont think its worth the trip if theyre playing in a swamp as someone stated.

How much do you think Giles playing today and this weekend will play into the Glenvar outcome? I mean, if Galax is no slouch and the of course Glenvar is the team to beat, that short week has to give an edge to the Salem squad, right?

The Giles Glenvar game may not prove anything. I expect it to be a close game despite the fact that both contests between them last year were blowouts. Union beat Richlands, but I doubt you can say they are definitively better. Union just happened to be up at the buzzer. That game could go either way no matter how many more times they played each other. Giles losing tonight to Galax, God forbid, would prove something though.

But to the original point, I think the eventual champion is likely to be one of these five teams. They seem to be the cream of the crop. I would also argue for including Brunswick, but I need to see more from them. Buffalo Gap, Clarke, Goochland, and Buckingham have demonstrated that they are good, but I don't think they are elite.

You are on fire!

Might be my new favorite poster.

You don't count Union's win over Richlands as impressive?

Yes i was going to mention that. Great win for Union. May be the biggest win out of those 5 teams. I pull for Richlands so i wasnt trying to take away from Richlands or Union, or any other team for that matter. Just chiming in with my opinion.

Unless i miscalculated, only Richlands and Appomattox have played a schedule with a combined winning record. 3 of those games for Richlands ended in a running clock. But like intrinsicreward said you could make a case for any of those teams. Just glad to see the West looking so deep. Should be fun come playoff time.

Everyone plays on it. The best team is the one who plays the best over 48 minutes given the conditions that are dealt. That's football as long as there's been football. Rain, snow, wind, sleet, humidity. Sure some conditions favor some teams more than others, but that's the way it goes. Coaches probably (or should) take into consideration their style of play on day 1 and how the elements might affect it. So the question is...are the Giles fans questioning the effectiveness of the single wing? Never thought I would see the day. I personally love watching The wing. How does a muddy field disadvantage a run oriented physical football team? From what I've seen, should see 2 of them tonight.

At what point t did I say disadvantage only to Giles? I said u might not be able to take much from the game because I don't think u will get to see either teams best in the conditions.

Watching the Appomattox and Buckingham game which was one of the best defensive games I witnessed. They are evenly matched top to bottom. Appomattox scored on a fumble return early in the 1st and didn't score again until the beautiful double reverse in overtime.Buckingham's only score came on a 4th and goal from the 15 with 12seconds left in the game. Had B.J Gough started the entire game at QB for Buckingham it may have been different. Neither team has come close to being stopped since but our big test comes this Friday against our arch rival Goochland who we haven't beat in 10yrs. If we can get a win against the Bulldogs we could be primed and ready for a good run. I don't see Appomattox losing in the regular season so if they hold on to that top spot its gonna be hard for anybody to beat them at home. Same for Buckingham the more games we be at home in the playoffs the better because we have never lost a playoff game at home.

This Spartan remains committed to the single wing. Poor footing will hurt our ability to block effectively. If I'm coaching the game, I'd use A LOT of misdirection to make the poor footing hurt the defense.

Seen a couple pics of the field on twitter. Doesnt look that bad. Definately not a swamp from what i can see anyway. Hows it holding up?

Nothing matters but head to head match ups...each team matches up differently from another...and these young men have good and bad weeks just like the players on tv every week...I mean look at giles vs glenvar last year....two shutouts...by each team...gotta play every down..
