BRISTOL, Va. – The Virginia High girls basketball team continued its strong start to the season Friday, picking up its second win of the week with a 54-48 home victory over Abingdon.
The Bearcats trailed 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, but an eight-point effort from Taylor Owens — which included a pair of three-pointers — put Virginia High back on top 25-18 heading into halftime. Virginia High faltered in the third quarter where they were outscored 14-11, but a 5-for-8 team performance from the free throw line was enough for the Bearcats to hang on and remain undefeated at 5-0.
“I think we could’ve played a lot better,” said VHS coach Kevin Timmons. “I think we fouled them way too much and kept them in the game a little longer, letting them hit free throws. They’re a great free throw shooting team. Talked about it before the game — don’t let them shoot free throws, keep them off the line. We didn’t do a great job of that.”
After finishing with 21 points against John Battle on Tuesday, Owens led the team in scoring again with 19 points, including three 3-pointers while shooting 6-for-10 from the free throw line. Jada Campbell and Madison Lockhart finished second on the team with nine points each, with Campbell, Maria Wilson and Amaya Lee combining to make three of the team’s six 3-point field goals in the win.
“Defensively, containing Peyton Carter [was key],” Timmons said. “Amaya Lee took her to task tonight until she got in foul trouble, then Bre Owens came off the bench and brought a lot of energy and a ton of enthusiasm to keep that fire alive defensively on her.”
Abingdon had three players finish with double-digit scoring, as Emily Breeding led the Falcons with 15 points while making both of the team’s two 3-pointers. Carter shot a game-high 10-for-13 from the free throw line to finish with 14 points, while Morgan Blevins made 4-of-7 free throws to finish with 10 points.
The Bearcats will face off against Abingdon (2-1) again Wednesday night before they take on Battle on Dec. 18 in another early season rematch.
